Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Rain in June

That day, the summer rain came suddenly. Lin Wan'er stood in front of the café at the corner of the street. Her white dress was soaked by the drizzle, clinging to her body, her curves faintly visible. She held no umbrella—because she knew he would come.

"Wan'er."

The familiar voice arrived as expected, warm and magnetic. It was Shen Ze.

Holding an umbrella in one hand, he took her wrist with the other and pulled her into his arms. She could smell the faint mix of tobacco and cologne on him—familiar and intoxicating.

Their relationship was ambiguous, dangerous. Lin Wan'er had been his first love in college. After breaking up, they had circled around each other for five years before reuniting. Now, Shen Ze was the boss of her best friend's boyfriend.

"You know you shouldn't be here," she whispered, her voice trembling against his chest.

"But I miss you, Wan'er," he murmured into her ear.

His hand slid down her back, pausing at her slender waist.

The rain fell harder, as if the world outside had been sealed off. She looked up at him, her dark eyes full of conflict and longing.

"If we had never broken up, would you have married me?" she suddenly asked.

Shen Ze didn't answer. Instead, he kissed her—a kiss full of urgency and regret.

She didn't resist. She even kissed him back.

Just then, a bolt of lightning split the sky.

She jolted awake and pushed him away.

"I can't lie to her. She's my best friend."

"But I'm the one you love," Shen Ze said, his eyes burning with obsession.

She turned and ran into the rain.
