Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Constructive Summer

=== June 10 1994 ===

Though no students were harmed, the attack the night before left the student body in a fugue state this morning. Harry and Hermione sit and the table only got for The Daily Prophet to drop in front of them.

Hogwarts Attacked!

It has come to this paper's attention that last night several swarms of dementors attacked the Hogwarts grounds last night.

Our sources say that the horde was held off by the students, who were taught the patronus charm by their defense teacher. Oddly enough our sources also say the current defense teacher was the only one of the primary professors to not show up to help. We have no idea why at this time.

Thankfully, no students were harmed. However, rumors say that former Undersecretary to the Minister, Delores Umbridge was on the grounds and somehow received the kiss.

"Harry, you need to read this." Hermione says with a hint of sadness in her voice as she hands him the newspaper.

Werewolf Teacher!

This paper feels duly obligated to inform you that we have found out why Remus Lupin, current Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, was not there to help defend the students on the be night of the dementor attack.

Lupin was bitten by a werewolf when he was young and now suffers the curse. We discovered that the Potions Master, Severus Snape, knew about his condition and has been brewing the wolfsbane potion for him. When asked to comment Professor Snape refused to do so.

So we went to the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, and asked him.

"Of course I knew of his condition." Dumbledore told us. "I also knew I had a capable potion master on staff to be able to make the potion that would ensure nobody got hurt."

Early in the morning, Harry finds himself summoned to Remus' office. Once there he finds the Professor boxing up his effects.

"You're leaving?" Harry asks.

"I'm afraid I don't have any choice." Remus says. "The Ministry says I'm unsafe."

"Damn,' Harry says. "You are a good teacher too."

"It's for the best." Remus says.

"Where are you going after this?" Harry asks.

"Sirius says I'm welcome to stay at Black Manor. I'll do that for the time being." Remus answers.

Hermione finds Harry standing in what used to be Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. He's staring at the brass plaque on the wall that reads:

In memory of

Myrtle Elizabeth Warren

Born: 31 October 1928

Died: 13 June 1943

Her benevolent spirit haunted this space.

She gave her afterlife to save the living:

9 June 1994

Hermione hugs Harry from behind. "How are you doing?"

Harry leans into the hug. "I think I'm okay. It's just so quiet without her."

"Are you going to miss having a reason to go into the girls' bathroom?"

Harry chuckles slightly. "Not really, I have the only witch I would want to spy on right here." He turns in the embrace just enough that he can kiss her cheek.

"You want to spy on me in the bathroom?" Hermione asks.

"Does it count as spying if you know I'm there?" Harry asks.

"No."

"Then no."

Hermione nods. "Come on, let's go see everyone, after all, we leave tomorrow."

"Sure." Harry says as he lets himself get pulled along.

#####

They all are gathered in the library chatting quietly, except Hermione who is reading. She closes the book with a sigh.

"Is something the matter?" Luna asks.

"No...yes...I don't know." Hermione answers, obviously frustrated.

"What's the problem?" Luna asks. "Maybe talking it out will help."

"As the heir of Ravenclaw I'm supposed to be able to summon Rowena's Grimoire, and I'm no closer to summoning now than I was at the beginning of the year." Hermione explains.

"Why don't you ask the Gray Lady for advice?"

"The ghost that is in Ravenclaw tower?" Hermione asks and Luna nods. "Why would I ask her?"

"She's Helena Ravenclaw."

"How.. how did I not know this?" Hermione asks as she gets up. "Harry, I'll be back." She quickly heads to Ravenclaw tower and effortlessly solves the riddle to gain entry. In the Ravenclaw common room she sees the ghost.

"Pardon me." Hermione says to the spirit. "I'd like to talk to you."

The ghost turns to her. "What about?"

"Helena Ravenclaw, I am Hermione Granger and I am your descendant."

"I….I suppose this had to come out eventually. Impressive it remained a secret for nearly a millennium." Helena sighs. "There was more than one reason I fled the school when I was 14. The one nobody knows is that I was pregnant with Bartimeus' child."

"Bartimeus?" Hermione asks.

"Baron Bartimeus Berrythorn, you know him as the Bloody Baron."

"I stayed in Britain long enough to have my daughter. When I discovered that my daughter was a squib I memory charmed some muggles whose daughter had suddenly died into thinking my daughter was theirs." Helena says. "I have longed for the day one of my descendants would walk these halls."

"Well, here I am. I am your magical heir." Hermione says.

"You want to summon mother's grimoire, don't you?"

Hermione nods. "Will you teach me how to summon it?"

"Hold out your hands and say dea ex magicae!*"

Hermione holds her hands out. "Dea ex magicael!" A large blue tome appears in her hands. "Thank you...Grandmother?"

"You are welcome, my child."

=== June 18 1994 ===

Without Remus the train car had more room than it did on the way to Hogwarts at the beginning of the year. Still, that didn't stop any of the girls from sitting on their boyfriends' laps for a portion of the trip.

Hermione stares out the window only to have Harry nudge her back to reality. "You okay Mione?"

Hermione nods. "I just can't help but think this is the last time Hermione Granger is going to ride this train."

"Wait, you're not coming back next year?" Ron asks.

"Of course she's coming back next year." Lavender says as she smacks Ron playfully.

"But she just said…" Ron starts obviously confused.

"She's taking Harry's name." Ginny says.

"I didn't think of that." Ron says.

"I wonder how many of the Professors will slip up and still call her Miss Granger instead of Missus Potter." Hannah says.

"Probably all of them." Hermione says "I figure I'll be spending the first month next year reminding them."

"That sounds like a lot of trouble." Luna says.

"It'll be worth it." Hermione says as she snuggles against Harry.

Loki jumps down into Hermione's lap from her perch amongst the luggage. 'Mum, what's my last name?'

'That's a good question, ask your father.' Hermione answers.

Loki looks at Harry. 'Dad, what's my last name?'

'Potter, unless your mother wants you to have Granger.' Harry answers.

Loki looks back at Hermione. 'Potter unless you want it to be Granger he said. I like Potter, since you're going to change your name.'

'Potter it is then.' Hermione responds.

"So do you two have plans leading up to the wedding?" Neville asks, breaking them from their mental conversation.

"We have some issues we need to work out." Harry admits. "We still need to find a magical arborist to grow the vines on the trellis like we want."

"I'm not a trained arborist, but I'll take a crack at it if you want." Neville says.

"That would be great." Hermione says.

"Otherwise I think we just plan to get our homework done so we can enjoy our honeymoon." Harry says.

"What are you two doing for your honeymoon?" Lavender asks.

"We're going on the Verne Magical Excursion." Hermione says.

"Is that the one with stops at The North Pole, The Bermuda Triangle, and Atlantis?" Luna asks.

"It is." Hermione says. "Both the cruise ships and trains that we get on have plenty of activities."

"If you two even leave the bedroom." Ginny teases.

"What are you talking about Gin?" Ron asks. "This is Hermione you're talking about. I'm sure she has everything scheduled to the last minute. Including," he clears his throat, "extracurricular activities."

Hermione blushes heavily. "Am I really that bad?"

"YES!" Everyone in the cabin except Harry says loudly.

"Don't listen to them Mione." Harry says as he pulls her against him. "They're just jealous of your brilliant brain, and planning skills."

"So it wouldn't bother you if I had planned our trip down to the minute?" Hermione asks smugly.

"I don't believe for a second you would, knowing my...spontaneity." Harry answers. "I'm sure you have a few things set in stone as to when we're doing them, but I imagine a much more liberal schedule than normal."

Hermione nods. "Exactly."

=== July 16 1994===

The doorbell rings startling Harry and Hermione from their homework. "I've got it." Richard says as he heads to the door. Richard opens the door, Malachi and Cheshire stand there. "Malachi!" He says surprised, "and you must be Cheshire."

"Please to meet you." Cheshire says.

"We were hoping to talk to Harry and Hermione." Malachi says.

"You know they make a telephone for that." Richard says./l

"Very funny." Malachi says.

"Come in, they're doing homework." Richard moves aside.

Malachi and Cheshire walk into the house and see Harry and Hermione sitting at the dining room table. "So this is how you two normally spend your summer?" Malachi asks.

"Malachi, Cheshire, what are you doing here?" Harry asks.

"We're getting married Monday, and would like you two to be our witnesses." Cheshire answers.

"Of course, we'd be honored." Hermione

"Muggle or magical?" Harry asks. "So we know how to dress."

"Magical, we're going down to the Ministry and signing paperwork, hence witnesses." Cheshire adds.

"Don't take this the wrong way, but that sounds boring." Hermione says.

"Maybe a little, but we don't want an elaborate ceremony." Malachi says. "Nor do we have any family to invite to it."

"As long as it's what you two want, it sounds perfect to me." Harry says.

Hermione chuckles. "Coming from the guy that barely had any input for his own wedding, that's funny."

"I gave input." Harry says.

"Agreeing with everything I say is not input."

"Even when I honestly agreed with you?"

Hermione sighs and looks at Cheshire. "Are they all like this?"

Cheshire shakes her head. "No, Harry's one of the good ones."

"What's that make me?" Malachi asks.

"The one that puts up with me." Cheshire says as she kisses him.

Loki appears on Malachi's shoulder. "Looks like Loki likes the new collar."

'I do, thank you Mal.' Loki thinks to him.

'Impressive, you've learned to project your thoughts to others.' Malachi responds.

'Thank you.'

'You're very welcome, let me know if there's anything else you need.'
