Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Money

===August 1 1994===

Harry is the first to wake up. As he does he notices a weight on his chest. He looks down and sees Hermoine snuggled against him, her head on his chest. He gently rubs her back and she snuggles against him more.

He reaches over and grabs his glasses. He puts them on then looks at the clock, the clock is blurry. Confused he takes his glasses off to check to see if something is on them only to realize he can see fairly well without them. 'Weird.' He thinks to himself.

"What's weird?" Hermione mumbles.

'Did I say that out loud and not realize it?' Harry asks himself.

Hermione groans. "If you're going to wake me up at least make it for honeymoon sex. Not because you're thinking out loud."

"Mione, I haven't said a word. I think we're hearing each other's thoughts." Harry says.

'Great, I marry him and he goes crazy.' Hermione thinks.

"I'm not crazy." Harry states.

Hermione fully wakes up and looks at Harry. 'Can you hear me?"

"Just fine." Harry replies.

"The book did say the ritual would have side effects." Hermione explains.

"This is a side effect?" Harry asks.

"I think so," Hermione responds. "I'm sure we'll get used to it and learn how to only send the thoughts we want."

"Of course," Harry says as he rubs her back. "In the meantime…"

Hermione chuckles as she doesn't need to read his mind to know what he's thinking. She grins wickedly. "I suppose I did ask for it."

#####

A couple of hours later the two of them are finally up and dressed. Harry sits on the bed looking into the mirror without his glasses. He touches his scar, now significantly faded. "Feels weird, not needing glasses anymore."

"I bet." Hermione says as she sits on his lap. "Made us showering together more fun though."

Harry kisses her. "If you keep sitting like that and we're not going anywhere anytime soon."

Hermione smiles as gets up. "Later, I promise." Harry nods as he watches Hermione grab his glasses and mutter a spell. She then puts his glasses on him. "There, they should be plain glass for the time being. There's a couple of enchantments I want to put on them later. Magical versions of night vision, and infrared. I believe there's one that'll let you identify magical disguises."

Harry nods. "Plus the added bonus that everyone will think I need the glasses therefore if they remove them they'll think they have an advantage."

"Exactly!" Hermione exclaims.

#####

Harry and Hermione walk into Gringotts and approach the nearest teller. "Greetings, I'm Harry Potter and this is my wife Hermione. I need to add her to my vault."

"Let me find the goblin in charge of your vault, Sir." The goblin climbs down from his spot and heads to the back of the bank.

A short time later he comes back with another goblin. "Mister and Missus Potter," the new goblin bows to them ever so slightly. "My name is Grimlok. I'm the manager for the Potter estate, please follow me."

Harry and Hermione follow Grimlok back to a small office. Grimlok sits at the desk and motions to the chairs in front of the desk. "Now, how may I help you?"

"I would like to have it so my wife could access my vault." Harry answers.

"Which vault sir?" Grimlok asks.

"What are you talking about?" Harry asks, confused. "I only have one vault, don't I?"

Grimlok laughs. "That's a good one." After a minute of laughter, he realizes that they're not laughing with him. "Wait, you're serious?"

Harry nods. "The first time I came here Hagrid handed a goblin the key to my vault. It's the only one I've accessed."

Grimlok nods. "That would be your trust vault, otherwise he wouldn't be able to touch the key. That vault was designed to take care of all of your expenses until you hit your majority."

"Majority?" Harry asks.

"Usually when you turn 17, but since you two are legally married you are now in your majority." Grimlok answers.

"So how much is in the main vault?" Harry asks.

Grimlok pulls out a parchment. "Over 48 million galleons liquid."

"48 million!" Harry exclaims.

"Your parents made some really good investments." Grimlok says as he hands them the parchment.

Hermione takes the parchment and starts unrolling it to read it.

Current status of Potter Family Vaults:

Main vault:

48,675,309 Galleons

Trust vault: (Harry James Potter)

75,765 Galleons

Hermione looks up at Grimlok. "Is this trust vault what he's been using to pay for everything?"

Grimlok nods. "Records show it was a set originally set to 100,000 Galleons."

Harry nods. "I'd like to put the trust vault back to 100,000 galleons and change the ownership to my sister."

"I have no record of you having a sister." Grimlok says.

"My mom hid her, her name is Ginerva Weasley, but she had mentioned that she wanted to change it to Potter." Harry explains.

Grimlok nods and writes on a parchment. "I'll need you to sign here, this will authorize the moving of the money." Harry signs, then Grimlok writes on another parchment. "This will authorize the vault transfer and allow her to take the Potter name, after we verify she's your sister of course."

"Of course," Harry says as he signs.

"Very good, I'll send her an owl shortly." Grimlok says.

"Thank you." Harry says.

"Would you like to set up a dowry vault for her as well?" Grimlok asks.

"What's a dowry?" Harry asks.

"Basically it's a vault for her future husband." Hermione says spitefully.

"That depends on how you set it up." Grimlok says. "We can make it so it can only be accessed after she is married and she would be the only one who can access it. Her future husband doesn't even have to know about it."

"Do that," Harry says.

"Of course, I'll do so immediately." Grimlok says.

"Thank you." Harry says. "Now let's see what else this list says:

Vault 2:

Potter Family Jewelry

Estimated value: Priceless

Vault 3:

Potter Family Armory

Estimated value: Priceless

"Armory?" Harry asks.

"All of the wands and staves that the previous Potters used are stored there." Grimlok says. "Aside from your parents', we never found them."

Harry nods. "That makes sense."

Properties:

Potter Manor: magic residence, unplottable, portkey available, unoccupied.

Number 4 Privet: muggle residence; Petunia Dursley nee Evans Caretaker

Harry busts out laughing. "10 years of my uncle saying none of that freakishness in HIS house, and it's not even his house!"

"You're not going to kick him out are you?" Hermione asks.

"It hurts that you even have to ask that question." Harry says.

Hermione sighs relieved. "Sorry, I know they're a sore spot in your life."

"I'm long since over that." Harry says. "I even invited them to our wedding."

"You did?" Hermione asks.

"You can ask your father if you don't believe me." Harry says the hurt is obvious in his voice. "I asked him to drive me over there so I could hand deliver the invitation."

Hermione hugs him. "I don't deserve you."

Harry hugs her back. "Apology accepted." They break the hug and look back at the parchment.

Cottage in Godric's Hollow. Badly damaged on 10/31/1981. Awaiting permission to repair, portkey available.

Hermione gasps, "this must be the house.." She trails off.

"My parents died there, I almost died there." Harry says, tears in his eyes.

"We don't have to go there, ever." Hermione says as she hugs him. "We could have it demolished, or sell it."

"Maybe we can sell it, for now, I think I'd like to have it fixed up." Harry says.

"Of course," Grimlok says. "I'll get our team right on it."

The Potters nod and continue to read:

Potter Island, magical land. located 25°N, 71°W in what muggles commonly refer to as the Bermuda Triangle. The Verne Expedition is currently paying to rent the island.

"We own an island?" Hermione asks.

"Apparently one of the previous Potters won it in a bet." Grimlok answers.

Hermione sighs and goes back to the parchment.

Potter Chateau: magical residence, located somewhere in Southern France, portkey available.

Condo in Florida, magical residence, currently being remodeled, portkey unavailable.

"Why do we own land in the States?" Harry asks.

"If I remember right some International development company asked your parents for a loan and gave them the property as a thank you." Grimlok answers.

Business ownership:

Daily Prophet: 51%

Hogwarts: 25%

Zonkos: 25%

Slinkeez: 51%

Gringotts mortgage company: 51%

Potter mortgage company: 51%

"Why do we have ownership in two mortgage companies?" Harry asks.

"You can thank your mother for that. As you know after the last goblin war we goblins were forbidden from owning any businesses that we didn't already own. Your mother saw the potential for there to be a mortgage company that offered loans and mortgages to witches and wizards. House Potter owns the business on paper but we goblins run it."

"And the other?" Harry asks.

"It provides loans and mortgages to muggles, its public face is run by wizards we employ, usually muggleborns."

"Those sound very lucrative." Hermione says.

"The majority of the money you make from those businesses go back into them. A percentage goes into your vault." Grimlok explains.

Harry nods. "That makes sense, and I don't see any reason to change any of that."

"I had hoped that would be the case." Grimlok says. "The last thing you don't see is your profits from selling the basilisk. That makes up nearly half of your current account."

"I didn't think about that." Harry admits.

"Now," Grimlok claps his claws. "Let's get to the business you actually came here for." He pulls out a knife. "Missus Potter, I'll need you to cut yourself so I can add you to the vault."

Hermione takes the knife and cuts her finger, pressing it to the parchment. When she lifts her finger the cut is healed. "There you go."

Grimlok nods. "It is done." He rolls up the parchment. "Was there anything else you needed?"

"We were hoping to hire some of your curse breakers." Hermione answers.

"We don't regularly hire out our curse breakers to civilians, but since House Potter has been good to us we'll listen to your request." Grimlok informs.

Hermione reaches into her robes and pulls out a black crystal. "This crystal is a phylactery, it has in it a piece of Tom Riddle's soul."

"Voldemort." Grimlok snarls. "Where did you get this?"

"It was in my scar." Harry states.

"I used a ritual last night to remove it from him and place it in the crystal." Hermione says. "We suspect that Riddle had purposely split his soul before this happened. The act of his own killing curse being reflected upon him caused a portion of his already damaged soul to break off and inhabit Harry's scar."

"That's a logical jump, but I fail to see what you need our curse breakers for?" Grimlok says.

"We were hoping that you could use this soul fragment to find the others and destroy them." Hermione explains.

Grimlok nods. "If you're right, then doing this could potentially be dangerous."

"That's why we came here, your curse breakers are trained for this kind of thing, right?" Harry asks.

Grimlok nods. "They are, I'll have to run this through them."

"Thank you." Hermione says.

Grimlok gets up and heads off. A few minutes later he returns with another goblin, this one armed. "Mister and Missus Potter, this is Sharptooth. He's the goblin in charge of the curse breakers."

"Thank you for meeting with us, Sharptooth." Harry says.

Sharptooth nods, "Grimlok has conveyed your request to me. May I see the phylactery?" He holds out his hand.

Hermione goes to put the black crystal in his clawed hand. Before she can pull her hand away he closes his claws digging them into her hand. Her blood drips down his claw. "What do you think you are doing?" Harry asks as he summons his sword.

"Gauging your reaction." Sharptooth says. "Impressive reaction with the sword."

"If we hadn't come looking for your help you'd be short a hand." Harry says.

"He'd be dead." Hermione says flatly. "Look behind you."

Sharptooth looks behind him and sees Hugin in mid-air poised to strike a fatal blow. "Remind me to stay on your good side."

"Release my hand." Hermione commands.

Sharptooth does as requested, the second his claw releases her hand the wounds heal. "I apologize for that. We curse breakers like to see if it's cowards that attempt to hire us. Clearly, you're not cowards, so why hire us?"

"Our understanding is that you are trained specifically to deal with dark artifacts." Hermione continues. "It makes sense to let the professionals do their job."

Sharptooth nods. "Very well, we'll take the job."

"Thank you." The Potters say in unison.

Sharptooth leaves with the phylactery. Grimlok steps back up. "I noticed you didn't ask about the cost."

"If you ask a professional to do a job you pay what they bill you." Harry grins. "Something tells me our credit is perfectly fine here."
