Kahn had always been curious why Azula's flames were a pale blue.
After years of research with no results, he eventually assumed it was simply a unique talent belonging only to Azula.
It wasn't until he learned Spiritbending that his research finally progressed—and the breakthrough came from a conversation with Iroh.
Firebending, at its core, is a flame of the heart—an expression of one's will, emotions, and character. At least, that's how it's supposed to be.
But when Iroh's grandfather initiated the Dragon Hunt, the original Firebending philosophy was changed.
Firebending, once fueled by all emotions, was warped into being powered primarily by negative emotions.
Anger, hatred, jealousy—Firebending driven by these feelings became far more destructive.
Fire itself changed from representing life and energy to symbolizing destruction.
After understanding this history, Kahn formed a new hypothesis about Azula's pale blue flames:
Azula's flames were the ultimate expression of Firebending in its corrupted, modern form.
As unwilling as he was to admit certain truths about her, Azula's natural personality was indeed far more extreme—and far more volatile—than that of most people.
Even though Kahn had softened parts of her personality over the years, the core of her madness remained.
She had only learned to restrain it around those she cared about.
Because her emotions were so pure and extreme, she became the perfect embodiment of this new type of Firebending—hence her pale blue flames.
Under normal circumstances, such flames were an unrepeatable miracle.
But Spiritbending changed the rules.
Because Spiritbending also relied on the mind, Kahn realized he didn't need to distort his own personality to obtain such flames.
Instead, he could use Spiritbending to gather all his emotions together, unifying them until they transformed in quality, replicating Azula's flame.
Thus, he created a new state:
The Limit of a Thousand Refinements.
But it wasn't without consequences. Overusing this form could burn out all emotions entirely, leaving one hollow and emotionless.
Activating it meant Kahn intended to end the battle quickly.
"Impossible! How can you use my flames!"
Azula's voice cracked as she lost control of her emotions. She hurled pale blue fire at him again and again.
Kahn didn't dodge. He simply answered each flame with one of his own.
This time, their flames collided evenly.
Azula's expression twisted as the truth hit her—his flames weren't an illusion. They were identical to hers.
She attacked wildly, her movements becoming more brutal and desperate, but Kahn parried every strike with casual precision, reading her like an open scroll.
"How? That's simple. I'm stronger than you."
Kahn suddenly pushed forward. Energy surged, pale blue fire erupting and blasting Azula backward.
He followed by flicking a pale blue firebolt past Mai's ear, stopping her cold.
"You should just stay put. This is between me and her."
He smiled.
Mai stared at the flames in his hand, and an unexpected chill ran up her spine. For one horrible moment, Kahn felt exactly like Azula.
Her body froze. She slowly raised her hands in surrender.
"…Alright. You're in charge."
Azula, enraged and humiliated, slipped back into the shadows. Lightning crackled at her fingertips like a viper ready to strike.
Stronger than me? If I kill you, I'll be the strongest!
She thrust her lightning forward—only for Kahn to casually catch it with Reverse Lightning Fire, redirecting it again and destroying another section of the transport.
"How many times do I have to show you? This move doesn't work on me."
"Besides…"
Before anyone could react, Kahn mimicked Azula's stance perfectly.
Lightning danced at his fingertips—then exploded outward, tearing through the vehicle as Azula stood frozen in disbelief.
His Lightningbending was not only real—it was stronger than hers.
"Lightningbending? I know that too."
"What… what are you…"
Reverse Lightning Fire, chi blocking, pale blue flames, Lightningbending—everyone present felt their minds short-circuit.
Nothing about this man made sense.
Azula stared at Kahn with pure hatred, her expression warped with resentment. If looks could kill, Kahn would have died a thousand times.
She had grown up undefeated, believing herself the strongest. And today, she had been crushed in every way.
Her combat skills, Firebending, Lightningbending—even her unique flames—all inferior.
Even her thoughts seemed transparent to him.
Why does someone like this exist? Why is he alive?
If he exists… what meaning does my existence have?
"I must kill you…"
She whispered it with her teeth clenched tight, hatred dripping from every syllable.
Kill him. Kill him kill him kill him kill him kill him kill him kill him—
"Are you… afraid?"
Kahn hadn't planned to do anything more than tease this world's Azula sisters and show off a bit.
But now, looking at her shaking, unhinged state, he felt uncomfortable.
The Azula from his own world no longer cared about power differences. She had her own ambitions and her own goals.
She played with people's minds.
She killed with words.
She wanted her mother back.
She wanted the throne.
She wanted to conquer the world.
She schemed, plotted, acted independently…
The Azula before him resembled her—but was not her.
"SHUT UP!!!"
Azula snapped and charged, utterly consumed by frenzy.
But Kahn was done playing.
He sidestepped her sloppy attacks and knocked her out with a clean chop, catching her before she fell and laying her gently on the ground.
"You two go back. Don't follow me again. Next time, I won't hold back."
He tossed the words over his shoulder at Mai and turned to leave.
"Oh, and tell Ozai—this time I'll kill him myself."
"…This time?"
Mai blinked. Was there a last time?
But as Kahn disappeared into the distance, she finally exhaled.
It felt good to be alive.
And she never wanted to encounter that monster of a man again.
