Chapter 1 - A KING WHO FORGETS HIS HEART

In the dim light of the room, Alexander stood tall and regal, exuding an air of authority and command. His broad shoulders were draped in a fitted black coat adorned with subtle embroidery, hinting at his noble status. A finely tailored shirt peeked from beneath, its crisp collar framing a jawline that was both strong and defined. His piercing blue eyes, usually filled with intensity, now appeared distant, as if lost in thought. Dark hair fell elegantly across his forehead, adding to the aura of refined elegance that surrounded him.

Suddenly, a petite figure rushed toward him, colliding with his solid back. The warmth of her embrace contrasted sharply with the coldness that enveloped the room. Soft curls cascaded down her shoulders, and tears streamed down her cheeks, glistening in the faint light.

"My Lord, you said you will never leave me, you said you love me," she sobbed, her voice trembling with desperation.

"Emily," he murmured, the sound escaping his lips like a ghost, hollow and echoing in the stillness of the chamber. His heart felt heavy, burdened by the weight of unspoken truths and the choices that had brought them to this moment, where duty and desire clashed within him.

---

"Emily," he murmured again, turning to face her. The sorrow in her eyes pierced through the walls he had built around his heart. "I—"

But she cut him off, her grip tightening around him as if she feared he might vanish. "You promised! You promised I would never be alone! The council is planning to send you away, and I can't bear the thought of losing you!"

A flicker of pain crossed his face, but determination ignited within him. The weight of his responsibilities pressed heavily, but he refused to be cowed. He stepped back slightly, breaking her hold just enough to look into her tear-streaked face. "You know my duty to the realm is paramount, Emily. I cannot abandon my people, nor can I dishonor my father's last request to marry Lady Georgiana Hastings."

Her eyes widened, shock and hurt etching deeper lines on her features. "You're serious? You'd choose a political marriage over... over what we have?"

"Do not mistake my duty for a lack of feeling," he asserted, his voice firm. "This is not merely about politics or power; it's about the future of our kingdom. My father believed in this union. It is my responsibility to ensure the stability of the crown."

"But what about us?" she cried, her voice breaking. "What about what we have? You can't just throw it away for a throne!"

He felt an ache in his heart as her words struck deep. "Emily, listen to me. This is not a choice I take lightly. If I fail to do what's expected, the consequence will be far greater than just my loss. If I do not take this step, everything we cherish—including our love—could come crashing down around us."

"Then why not fight for us?" she implored. "You have the power to choose! You could tell them you reject this arrangement!"

A fierce resolve burned in his eyes. "I refuse to be a puppet, but I cannot ignore the call of duty either. What good is a king if he cannot protect his realm?"

"A king who forgets his heart," she replied, tears shimmering in her eyes, "Is no king at all. Is your crown worth sacrificing the one person who sees you for who you really are?"

His chest tightened at her words, and he stepped closer, his voice lowering but gaining intensity. "You think I want to hurt you? You think I'd cast aside everything we've built for a title? No! If I could rewrite fate, I would give up my father's legacy and the throne for you!"

"Then do it!" she cried, her voice a mixture of desperation.

Just then, Alexander drew her close, their breaths mingling in the chilly air. He pressed his lips to hers—a kiss that was both tender and distant, filled with unspoken emotions.

"Emily," he began, his voice low and earnest, "This marriage to Georgiana won't create a barrier between us. Yes, I must marry her, but I want you to know that my heart will forever remain locked with yours, the little angel I fell for..." He struggled to find the words, the weight of his confession hanging heavily in the air.

Before he could finish, Emily wrapped her arms around him, holding on as if he were her lifeline. The warmth of her embrace contrasted sharply with the chill that surrounded them, and for a brief moment, they were lost in each other.

As she pulled back, her eyes searched his, filled with a mixture of hope and despair. With a final, lingering glance, she turned and dashed away, her footsteps echoing in the silence, leaving Alexander standing there, torn between duty and the love that would never fade.
