Chapter 4 - Settling for the Night

I wandered around the ruined settlement. What could possibly have happened here that caused the villagers to abandon this peaceful looking place? It probably looked like an attack by bandits. I had encountered them from time to time when I used to play. The bandits were a constant nuisance. They robbed resources and killed mercilessly. I felt fearful at the thought of what my fate would become if I fell into the hands of bandits before I even got to know my abilities. It would have been the end of my life. I had no weapon to defend myself with against any kind of attacks. I assured myself to not worry about such thoughts for now.

Looking around, I finally found a little run down house which looked like it could serve me as a comfortable shelter for a few days. I entered it and was happy to find a few useful things. I managed to pick up an axe, a bow and arrows, a spiked club and a hay quilt which served me as a comfortable bed for the night. My next concern was food, water and warmth.

I found a few good pieces of firewood in the house. These I brought outside and cleared a space around which I could use as a firepit. I had never gone camping outdoors before but somehow, right here and now, it looked like the game was slowly feeding me information on what I was supposed to do. I then rubbed a few different twigs a few times before I was able to successfully start a fire. I quickly and carefully nurtured the flames till they grew and the fire was stable enough.

As I sat in front of the fire warming myself, I felt great. For food, I was lucky to find some edible berries in good condition stored under some kind of makeshift storage compartment under the floor of one of the houses. I would have to satisfy myself thus. I then found a clay pitcher for water, and taking it, began to search around the village. I knew that no village could sustain without a water source. I managed to come across a well a little distance from the settlement which thankfully, had fresh water.

I filled my pitcher with water, drank my fill and returned to the campfire spot. Night was nearing and I decided to turn myself in. I picked up my axe, extinguished the campfire and then proceeded to very carefully carry the warm charcoal into the house. I piled the charcoal along one side of the makeshift bed made from straw stuffed into thick long sacks to keep myself warm. I then tore up another sack to make it longer and to serve as a blanket to tuck myself up. I kept the axe by my side and lay down on the bed.

Thus in this manner, I settled in for the night and drifted off to sleep.
