c122: Drone Rotom!!
Slap...
"Alright, everyone, please quiet down and give me your attention before we begin," Professor Oak said, clapping his hands to draw the students' focus.
"Today marks the third day of our summer camp, and your assigned activity is to produce a short Pokémon video."
"Among you, I'm sure there are a few who've already experimented with making Pokémon short films essentially, Pokémon promotional clips. These videos capture the interactions between Trainers and their Pokémon, showcasing not only the unique abilities of Pokémon but also the emotional bonds between Trainer and partner."
"In the Kalos Region, where Pokémon Performers are quite popular thanks to Showcases and media exposure, these kinds of videos are widely created to document growth and celebrate everyday life with Pokémon. They're even used as debut tools for aspiring performers, especially in cities like Lumiose and Coumarine."
"As this summer camp is a cross-regional cultural exchange project between Kanto and Kalos, we've decided to include this cultural tradition today by having you film a Pokémon short video. It's a great opportunity to better understand the creative side of Kalos culture."
"So, here's your task: each of you, alongside your Pokémon partner, will produce a short video that reflects your bond. At 6 PM tonight, we'll gather in the camp hall, where all submissions will be screened and scored."
"Like the previous activities, the scoring will be out of 10 points—0 being the lowest, 10 the highest so I encourage all of you to give it your best effort."
Once Professor Oak finished outlining the day's task and rules, the students didn't respond with the usual excitement or chatter. Instead, an awkward silence lingered over the group. Most of the students exchanged concerned or confused glances.
Student H hesitantly raised a hand. "Um, Professor Oak? We're supposed to shoot Pokémon short videos, but… we don't even have cameras. And even if the camp provides them, none of us really knows how to use that equipment."
Student I nodded in agreement. "Exactly! And isn't there supposed to be editing, music, and post-production involved? I've seen how it's done on Kalos TV we're just kids, and we don't know how to do any of that."
Student J added with a sigh, "Yeah, for us, making a short film sounds way too hard…"
The crowd of campers in the training field seemed far more overwhelmed than inspired by the announcement. Complaints replaced the usual buzz of enthusiasm that typically followed Oak's activity briefings.
Even seasoned students like Gary and Xiaolan looked visibly uncertain. Gary scratched his head, while Xiaolan glanced at her Pokémon partner as if to ask silently how they'd manage.
Yet Ash's expression remained calm and thoughtful, noticeably different from the others. He rested his chin between his thumb and forefinger as he began to piece together ideas.
"Shooting a Pokémon video, huh?" he murmured under his breath. His sharp gaze suddenly lifted and landed on the female reporter standing beside Professor Oak Yoko from Saffron City TV Station.
She wasn't just standing idly. Ash noticed that Ms. Yoko was carefully observing the students, analyzing their reactions, and perhaps even taking mental notes of who looked confident and who didn't. Ash's eyes narrowed slightly, the gears in his mind clearly turning.
"Oh? You noticed it too?"
Spotting the calm gaze of the black-haired boy in the student group, Yoko, the stylish reporter from Saffron City TV Station, couldn't help but let the corners of her mouth curl into a soft, appreciative smile.
At the same time, a spark of curiosity and interest stirred within her toward the composed boy with short, dark hair Ash Ketchum. His unusually steady demeanor for a six-year-old reminded her of stories she'd heard from the Kanto Alliance's internal media briefings.
Slap...
"Alright, everyone, quiet down for a moment," Professor Oak clapped again to bring the students' murmuring to a halt. "I understand that some of you are feeling nervous or uncertain about today's assignment, but don't worry. We've already accounted for that."
"To assist you all in shooting your Pokémon short films, Miss Yoko and her team will be providing full technical support."
Oak then stepped aside, gesturing toward Yoko with an open palm. "Now, Ms. Yoko will explain the equipment and process in detail."
"Hello everyone, I'm Yoko Yoko, a field reporter for Saffron City TV Station—but you can all just call me Sister Yoko."
"I heard from Professor Oak that today's summer camp activity is focused on making Pokémon short films. To help you with this, I've specially coordinated with our HQ to deliver 100 Drone Rotoms just for your use today."
As Yoko walked to the front of the student group, she offered a confident smile and began answering their unspoken confusion.
Student K: "Drone Rotom? What's that? Some kind of new recording device?"
Student L: "I remember my sister's friend in Celadon City who works at a tech salon mentioned Rotom... Isn't that a Pokémon from Sinnoh or Unova? But I don't get what a drone Rotom is."
Hearing unfamiliar terminology, the group of six-year-olds whispered among themselves, curious yet puzzled.
"Rotom is a very unique and fascinating Electric/Ghost-type Pokémon," Yoko began, clearly used to addressing younger audiences. "It can possess and merge with various electronic devices, essentially giving them a will of their own. A Drone Rotom is simply a Rotom fused with a camera drone."
"You can control them just like you command a Pokémon through spoken instructions and gestures. The Drone Rotom will handle all the filming, camera angles, and even simple effects."
"Rinto!!"
Yoko suddenly turned toward the broadcast van parked near the dam's embankment, calling out to her production lead.
"Roger that," a man's voice responded through a speaker. A moment later, a high-speed whirr echoed as the first Drone Rotom emerged from a hatch on the van's roof. Its fans spun rapidly as it lifted into the air and hovered gracefully toward the students.
"Wow!!"
"Is that really a Drone Rotom? That's amazing!"
Even though Drone Rotoms have become common in modern Pokémon society used frequently in Pokémon World Coronation Series battles to record matches and even serve as referee drones for the six-year-olds at camp, this was their first live experience with such advanced tech.
While the others were still marveling, Ash quietly studied the floating Drone Rotom, his eyes shining with fascination.
Rotom was indeed a Pokémon of wonder. Not only could it move freely through power cables in plasma form, but it could also inhabit and power a wide array of household appliances. There were already Rotom Phones and Rotom Pokédexes in common use, and Drone Rotom was just one of its many practical applications.
Ash recalled from the Oak Lab's database that when Rotom possessed appliances like ovens, fans, or washing machines, it could even transform, gaining new elemental typings and enhanced base stats a unique case that resembled a form change rather than standard evolution.
"It's such a convenient, mysterious, and strong Pokémon..." Ash thought to himself as he watched the Drone Rotom loop through the sky, trailing soft light.
"If I get the chance one day, I definitely want to catch one for myself."
"All right, now that you understand how the Drone Rotom works, please come over to the equipment tent. Each group will be assigned ten Drone Rotoms to assist in your shoot," Yoko announced.
"Once you've received yours, you can head off and begin recording your Pokémon short films."
"And one more thing," she added cheerfully, "my colleagues and I will also be doing mini-interviews throughout the day. So if you see us approaching, don't be shy! We'd love to hear your thoughts and creative ideas."
All Students (in unison): "Yes!!"
