"Old man, why did you cover it? Are you mad?" Yugito Nii's eyes were glued to the large pot, the enticing aroma making her start swaying again.
The two tailed beasts clinging to Kai's body stared, yawning widely, their breath misting his clothes.
Samui and the others didn't press, but their anticipation was palpable.
"Stop shaking me, I'm not as petty as you," Kai said, flicking Yugito's forehead. Looking at the steaming pot, he said, "About ten more minutes!"
Ten minutes?
"Boss, find a place to let us out!"
The two tailed beasts' voices echoed in Kai's mind, their urgency clear.
To them, the pot, while large (70-80 centimeters in diameter), was minuscule compared to their massive size.
Returning to their true forms, it would barely be a mouthful. Seeing the children and the ever-hungry Yugito, they were getting restless.
"This is Kumogakure, with two tailed beasts present. If you revert, even if you shrink, you'll likely be recognized," Kai said, raising an eyebrow. "How about you wait? I'll make you some more next time…"
"No way!" The two tailed beasts shouted in unison.
Their next suggestion stunned Kai.
"Boss, we can transform into huskies. The monkey's transformation jutsu is top-notch in the shinobi world," Son Gokū said.
Shukaku nodded in agreement. "Let us out quickly! That girl's not to be trusted. If we're late, we'll only get to lick the pot."
Their gazes intensified, fixated on the steaming pot, their ferocious beastly nature momentarily replaced by the simple desires of dogs.
"Boss, don't hesitate!" Son Gokū urged. "Six minutes left! Any delay will be too late!"
"Boss, if you don't let us out, we're going to rampage!" Shukaku licked its lips, echoing the sentiment.
Seeing their resolve, Kai sighed. "Kimimaro, summon the ninken. They've worked hard on the journey."
"Ninken?" Samui was surprised. Given Kai's strength, she expected powerful contract beasts. While ninken were loyal, their battlefield roles were primarily support and tracking; their actual combat effectiveness was minimal.
However, she quickly understood. Powerful contract beasts were mostly inherited. Some were obtained through village-provided contract scrolls, others through chance encounters.
Jiraiya's summoning of toads from Mount Myōboku was accidental; Minato, Naruto, and even Konohamaru's toad summons were due to generational inheritance. Slugs and Enma were examples of family-inherited contracts.
Samui considered Kai a mere Akatsuki leader; reaching this point through his own strength was impressive. Expecting a contract beast like Hanzo's Salamanders was unrealistic.
"Ninken?" Kimimaro was stunned, his facial muscles twitching as he looked at the two tailed beasts, now ornaments on Kai's neck.
But their intense gaze spurred him into action. Delaying would anger them, and that wasn't something to be taken lightly.
"Old man, can't I have this one all to myself?" Yugito complained, having witnessed the tailed beasts' power. The pot wasn't large enough for them to share.
Before Kai could respond, a figure descended from the sky, landing near Samui.
"Sensei Dodai?" Samui was surprised, her lips parting slightly.
Dodai waved his hand, frowning as he surveyed the surroundings. Seeing the ruined refugee camp, his frown deepened. "I received a report that Kinkaku and Ginkaku caused trouble here. It seems you're unharmed."
Dodai looked at Kai's pot and the even larger bowl. The rising steam suggested things were going well.
"Sensei Dodai, there was a conflict… but…" Samui began to explain, but Dodai interrupted.
"It's fine as long as everyone's alright. Avoid conflict with that clan for now. We'll deal with it when the Fourth Raikage returns."
"And Yugito, you're different. If you're hungry, apply for food. Wartime rations are strict, but I'll turn a blind eye for now."
Dodai knew the refugee camp mostly had vegetables, milk, and grains. He wouldn't bother with Kai, an outsider.
But Yugito was the most compatible vessel for the Two-Tails. If she became jinchuriki and felt mistreated, it would affect her loyalty. It was better to be kind to the future jinchuriki.
"Hmph, ignorant fool!" Yugito scoffed. "The Old Man's cooking is beyond your comprehension. Don't get greedy later."
"Little rascal, don't be so cheeky," Kai patted Yugito's head. "We're guests. It's just a simple dessert, not fit for a grand occasion, but Sensei Dodai, if you don't mind, please try some."
"It's almost ready. Time to uncover it."
Kai lifted the lid. Steam rose, carrying the aroma of ginger and milk, filling the air. The unique scent made everyone inhale deeply. Even Dodai couldn't help but sniff.
They saw the jiggly ginger milk pudding, speckled with red beans and ginger. It looked strangely appealing, stimulating their appetites. What was this?
