Chapter 73 - Chapter 72: Emergency Curriculum

"This should be fine; you can now draft the letter for the biodiversity index and noise pollution index of Fuchsia."

As the words of Prof. Josie, head researcher of the Cinnabar Island Center of Green Development fell into the ears of Anthony and Mary, the duo collectively breathed a long sigh of relief as finally, they will be able to move on the 'RAD' part of their 'IMRAD' after being stuck in the 'IM' part for a week, revising it using the meticulous, I mean METICULOUS eyes of their adviser repeatedly.

Prof. Josie seems to have forgotten that the ones she's advising are just children and taught them how the flow of citations from local to global and local contexts should be. While Anthony has already checked and tried to rephrase all of their Introduction repeatedly, he was, in the end, a salaryman and was more used to creating presentations than to creating a paper, so his revisions always have flaws until today.

The revisions are mostly in the introduction part since that's the part with the most citations besides the Results and Discussions part, meaning Prof. Josie crossed out lots of citations and demanded (Anthony quotes) to add more in some areas. It has gotten to a point where 45% of the whole introduction needed to be rewritten, and Prof. Josie has a slight look of disgruntlement shown in her neutral face.

Anthony wondered if the peer reviewers would need to do anything at all after all of this was done. Hearing the audible sigh of relief of the interns in front, the face of Prof. Josie remained neutral as if she just didn't got suspected of being a sadist deep down by the two.

"You two seem to be tired; don't worry, you will be more tired with this."

As the professor quipped, she suddenly pulled out two stapled two-page sheets in a pair and then gave them to Anthony and Mary. It had a table with dates and days as well as deadlines for data collection activities packed from the last week of February until the 31st of October; furthermore, their work is not only within the vicinity of Cinnabar Island this time, but in the whole of Kanto with surveys, live sample taking from sewers, identifying still water locations, and more. These tasks are apparently either academics in schools wanting to ask for logistical help, PhD students, and of course researchers inside the center of green development.

Even Prof. Josie has 2 of her research projects where they will do the data collection; the schedule is incredibly arduous.

Prof. Josie, of course knowing the way Prof. Oak works and how the number of interns was reduced to a measly 7 once again, spoke.

"All of your questions should be answered by Prof. Oak through that letter on the next page after the schedule."

Hearing this, the two immediately flipped the next page and saw a not-so-long letter of instruction from the Kanto Pokemon Professor himself. It reads like this:

Dear interns, before reading everything, I hope this letter finds you well, and I apologize for the short notice of the arrival of this letter. We all know the unfortunate incident surrounding Anthony Dover and at that time, I was quite angered and have haphazardly made all of you go away to the lab and go to different labs most with gym leaders nearby or very far away from the spot where Team Rocket is operating to give you the safety that you deserve while making the most conducive environment we can give you available for you.

The labs are just supposed to be a 'stopover' every time you collect data for them, meaning you're always supposed to be here in the main lab while still tending to Pokemons and learning how to create research and publish one before graduating, while also having monthly tournaments amongst yourselves. But, like I said, because of the attempted kidnapping, I rushed to get you all out of the lab and spread out your locations to investigate all researchers here and confirming that the coast is now clear, this made me not able to revise your data collection tasks on time and give you the quite laxed curriculum that considered your other tasks inside the main lab instead of your current situation.

Now that everything is stabilized to some extent and Team Rocket already have their behind being flamed by the Interpol even as you read this letter, I have created the emergency intern's curriculum where all of you will be the test subjects (for a lack of better term) with a simple rule: When a calamity that causes grave threat to the interns' safety happened inside the site of internship, the following motions will automatically be activate:

All activities inside the main lab for the interns will be cancelled, and they will be sent to other labs to designate them as survivors, and they will be given the training of their main task in being an associate field researcher: data collection.

The tasks to stabilize the situation will be handled by the current Pokemon Professor of the Kanto Region irrespective of his current location, while the handling of the schedule shall be given to the sub lab heads; in this regard, the latter is expected to be able to adjust the collection tasks until October 31st of the same academic year.

If this emergency curriculum is to be successful, then god forbid, but it would be the immediate response of the lab when another calamity strikes one of our interns or us. For clarification, this is a different contingency than the disaster contingency when something fatal happens to a lot of students at once in a single batch, for as the name implies, it only applies when the death of almost 60% of the interns at any point of the internship is observed.

That's all, thank you for your understanding.

Yours truly, Professor Samuel Oak.

As Anthony finished reading the letter, he once again looked at the schedule, which was apparently assigned by Prof. Josie, though his mind was somewhere else.

_So that means if there's a possibe threat to safety, there would be a different emergency curriculum as to when lots of students already died... most likely because they would've cancelled the whole program altogether if the latter is to happen... now, as to why in the hell is this packed than my abs..., no, actually it's understandable since they were tasked to give us a compacted version of the data collection dates, so everything in the last two months of the 10 months we were supposed to spend collecting data will be moved to the previous two months and a domino effect will happen..._

Anthony, however, still has a question.

"Is this why you said that Prof. Oak still has something in store for us? Can you announce things like that without confirmation with the professor?"

And they can't ask for secondary data ahead of time? Of course, Prof. Josie, who was once a kid too, knew what Anthony was talking about.

"But of course, it's something that won't really do anything in the quality of your internship. I just said the most logical thing Prof. Oak would do since I was once also an intern like you, and like you too, we aren't allowed to handle ghost types until the end of the internship."

Anthony and Mary nodded silently at this and didn't say anything, though Anthony still felt like it was somehow unfair. However, he didn't say anything further, but Mary seemed to have another question.

"Is it confirmed that we will be handling ghost types after the data collection tasks are over?"

Prof. Josie simply nodded her head, making Mary also nod hers, her eyes showing the excitement she felt. After all, while she had already come to terms with doing research in general, she still loved learning knowledge rather than creating knowledge itself; it was normal for her to feel elation.

Prof. Josie, looking at her silent interns, continued speaking.

"If you don't have any questions, then I will wait for the letter of request before... doing things, so go and draft it immediately. I will be giving you the template of the lab report sheet so you don't need to go back repeatedly here to get one from me; then you can pass them in bulk per week or per month. Make sure to pass the hard copy of the intro and methodology below the letter and not online, okay?"

Anthony and Mary, not having any more questions, nodded succinctly before leaving the room. While walking back to their room, Anthony once again looked at the schedule, where there were some days with 2 to 3 data collection activities they had to complete, while there was even a month where no rest day from data collection would be given. Mary was looking too, alongside him, and soon, the two looked at each other silently.

"We have to finish the 'RAD' as soon as possible, huh."

Anthony nodded, knowing how much of a pain and hell their next months are going to be. He then replied before they branched out of their own rooms with their Pokemons.

"Yes, and we have one immediately today at Pewter; we seem to have given automatic permission to use a Bird Pokemon from the lab. So we have to hurry. I can draft the letter now and give you the file for your online signature and then send it to the professor and the statistician."

After Mary nodded, the interns went to their rooms and started their preparations. Anthony went to his PC and created a letter with 3 signatories, him, Mary and Prof. Josie as well as the statistician, which he just searched the name in the scholar website and then put his online signature in it and then sent it to Mary and to Prof. Josie before having his meal and bath, he then waited for Mary for a few moments before going to his room again and getting the signed file before printing it out alongside their Introduction and Methodology.

The two then stapled the letter atop the intro and the methodology before going to the statistician's office, which is in the offices area of the center, and presented the letter to the statistician, who seemed to also be busy with his own research. The statistician said that an answer would be given that night.

Anthony and Mary have the hunch that the statistician will forget their letter if it was sent online, so it's a good thing that they were advised to do so physically. Plus, it's not like they were colleagues or anything of the sort that they can casually do that; a wet signature is still necessary and the best gesture of respect.

"Piiiieeedgeeeiioott!"

While Mary and Anthony were walking out of the lab, they heard their new 'vehicle', a Pidgeot, screeching its lungs out. This made the two interns sigh.

_Man, that new schedule is a fucking pain..._

____________

"So loud..."

As the whole center heard the announcement of the Pidgeot that seem to have gotten such way of announcing its arrival from the Lapras that put the interns back to the green development center a week ago, Prof. Josie sighed, once again putting up her already well-positioned head in a pillow atop her desk which she will use to do 'other works' in her dreamlands for the whole day as all of her works for the day is already done yesterday.

Sometimes, lazy people will go to unbelievable lengths to become lazy for a longer period of time, though this period has been interrupted and Prof. Josie is once again wide awake because of such noise. As the professor sighed, she remembered the mandate and suggestion of the Pokemon professor of Kanto to all the lab heads with interns designated to them, which is to use cities as the data collection sites or places with lots of Pokemon World Government presence to avoid any kind of compromising situations possible, as they were the ones that would be responsible for scheduling the whole thing.

That's exactly what Prof. Josie did, using all of her connections in different labs within the environmental science circle as well as her little clout with Interpol (as she's not a fan of involving herself in militant things) to make the safest data collection route of the two possible. In truth, the data collection schedule is not supposed to be jampacked like how Anthony and Mary's turned out to be, but for them to be safe, sometimes they have to be crammed very far away from a certain route or get out of a certain direction just so they can continue being data collectors in peace.

_I hope my predictions are correct... I'm not an LLM developer and only used spreadsheets to predict all of that..._

Prof. Josie thought again before slumping her head into the pillow; soon, loud snoring could be heard.
