Chapter 5 - Chapter 5- Vampires

Li Wei is aware of what an assassination mission entails; it is the most common job for proper hunters.

Ever since the post-apocalyptic era, this world has been teeming with all sorts of monsters. It's not just a matter of zombies from biochemical catastrophes or mutated beasts. Through the memories from his previous host's body, he learns that the world even harbors some mythical fiends.

Aside from talking about demons and spirits, creatures such as werewolves and vampires do exist.

Li Wei had no way of knowing what exactly happened during the great catastrophe five hundred years ago, as neither his previous life nor the body he possessed after crossing over had any knowledge of it. What he could ascertain was that human civilization was completely destroyed after the catastrophe, and the current civilization was rebuilt from the ruins.

Moreover, the living environment for humans was not as good as imagined. The wilderness outside cities and large human settlements was teeming with various strange and dangerous monsters.

Even within human society, many such entities had infiltrated.

Vampires were one of the monsters that could adapt well to human society. They possessed a human appearance, and apart from their slightly pale skin, they were almost indistinguishable from humans under normal circumstances.

Under these circumstances, the profession of "hunters" emerged.

They hunted down monsters and protected humanity.

Of course, so-called protection of humanity is just an incidental thing at best; it can only be considered a superficial slogan for external publicity, and hunters don't have this sort of sentiment and ambition.

In reality, earning money, utilizing materials produced by monsters, evolving themselves, and becoming stronger is the main goal of hunters.

The Hunter's Guild is, as the name suggests, an organization of hunters.

As for his previous occupation as a "bounty hunter," though it sounds good, it's essentially a group of hunters who can't make a go of being demon hunters and can only accept some shady commissions.

To be honest, after traversing through, Li Wei was very eager for the profession of demon hunting. He was genuinely curious to see what these legendary creatures really look like.

It must be said, the adventurous factors in his soul and the genes of not being willing to be ordinary or lonely are still the dominant ones.

However, this matter is not as simple as it seems. He didn't overlook the lettering "Challenge Level: C" on the commission.

In the past, the bounties that bounty hunters received hardly ever exceeded D-level and didn't involve any monsters.

As for missions at the C level, only hunters who have undergone extreme trials can accomplish them. If one steps up to the B level, they must be hunters who have unlocked their genetic potential and become evolvers to qualify for the mission.

For Li Wei, the difficulty level of C-level missions is relatively high. In the past, if he accepted a mission at this level, it would have been absolutely deadly.

However, today is different from the past.

After being reborn and possessing the Book of All Laws, Li Wei now has Sharingan, can impersonate others, and also has a newly acquired skill called the Steel Slashing Flash. Even though his physical strength is still relatively weak and hasn't exceeded ordinary levels, dealing with C-level missions is no longer a death sentence but has a considerable chance of success.

Of course, the risks are great, but is there anything in this world that is both risk-free and highly profitable?

Moreover, this matter concerns his own life. He and Zhang Xi are now mortal enemies.

Deal with a C-ranked commission, obtain intelligence about Zhang Xi, and incidentally earn a substantial bonus to enhance his own strength.

If it's really unmanageable, there's always a chance to run away.

Picking up the commission letter, Li Wei said: "I've accepted the mission, and I trust that you won't deceive me in this matter. However, in terms of intelligence, I hope you can tell me everything, anything related to Zhang Xi or this subordinate vampire."

  "It's one and the same."

  "Hm? How so?"

Aileen raised her eyebrows and spoke easily: "Zhang Xi is Konstantin."

"Oh, really!" Li Wei was genuinely surprised, "Are you saying the boss of the Skeleton Gang in District 17 is a vampire?"

  "That's correct."

"Haha." Li Wei's face changed, "Aileen, you've trapped me!"

Subjugate vampires are already quite formidable foes, as are gang leaders. Combine these two, however...

Li Wei had also heard of blood slaves before.

People who have been bitten and sucked blood by vampires either die or become so-called blood slaves.

Blood slaves are not vampires; the distinction between them is clear. Blood slaves are merely vampires' minions, undead monsters revived from death. They possess a humanoid appearance but cannot be exposed to sunlight, nor do they have the ability to transform into bats as mythologized about vampires. Otherwise, they don't differ much from vampires; they retain their ability to feed on blood, possess intelligence, and retain their memories from before their undeath, or don't even completely die. However, they must unconditionally obey the control of their vampire masters.

Then, after becoming the boss of the Skeleton Gang in the seventeenth district, who knows how many members of this gang have turned into Chang Xi—or rather, Konstorf's—blood slaves?

Aileen said with a smile that wasn't quite a smile, "What have I ever done to you?"

  Li Wei was speechless.

After a while, Aileen said, as if comforting a child, "Alright, alright, sister knows this mission is quite challenging, but there are really no masters in our 17th block. You are considered quite excellent. Help sister deal with this trouble. You see, I've paid you in advance!"

As she spoke, Aileen hugged Li Wei tighter and rubbed her chest against his face.

Li Wei broke free from her embrace and said angrily, "Don't flatter me. It's not that there are no masters; it's just that the mission is too dangerous, and no one wants to take it on, right? You've just dumped this mission on me?"

Erin waved her hand and said, "Anyway, you are also going to trouble Zhang Xi, I don't care, you have taken the commission, and I have told you the information. You go and bring me the small vampire's two fangs, and the mission is completed."

Li Wei said, "No way, you obviously cheated me. Since you said to pay in advance, take the payment first, don't mention the information. When it comes to the hunting commission, you should provide me with the target's information, right? What is the advance payment?!"

Erin thought for a while and said, "Okay, okay, so that the kid doesn't die and mess up the commission. Come over, and I'll give you the payment."

Li Wei stepped forward and took a paper box from Erin's hand. He weighed it, and there was a sound of jingling inside the paper box.

  "Bullets?"

"Well, but not ordinary bullets, you can see when you open it."

Li Wei opened the bullet box in doubt.

After counting, there were twenty-seven bullets in this not entirely full box, all 9MM universal pistol bullets. This style of bullet is also compatible with the SN97 pistol that Levi previously captured from the bald Hu Wei.

He picked up one of the bullets and held it up to examine it closely. Soon, he noticed the difference.

  "What are these patterns?"

Levi was referring to some strange patterns inscribed on the bullet. These should not be decorations, because he sensed a strange power in these patterns.

  The power of light.

"Magic patterns, special engravings that impart special powers to bullets, specifically used to kill special abnormal monsters, such as vampires. Ordinary bullets cannot harm vampires."
