Synopsis
What if the only way to move forward… was to fake your past? That’s the dilemma facing Calla Rivera, a broke barista with a secret—she used to be someone else. Years ago, Calla walked away from a powerful crime family and buried her identity under a new name, a new city, and a painfully honest life. But when a viral video of her saving a customer goes public, her old world comes knocking… in the form of Leo Castellano, her former fiancé and heir to the criminal empire she abandoned. Leo has a proposition: pretend they’re still together to secure a billion-dollar merger. The perks? Luxury penthouses, designer wardrobes, and a paycheck that could solve all of Calla’s problems. The downside? Leo is as infuriating as he is magnetic—and playing house with him stirs up old feelings she can’t afford to feel. As Calla is pulled deeper into the illusion, the lines blur. Is she acting—or falling again? And when a rival family discovers her reappearance, the real danger begins. Because in Leo’s world, love isn't the most dangerous thing. Trust is.

Chapter 1 - How to Fake

When Summer StayedChapter One – The Train to Nowhere

The train rocked gently as it sped through the countryside, streaks of gold sunlight slanting across the windows. Mia Turner sat by the window, head propped against the glass, her reflection blurred by motion. She had promised herself she wouldn't cry, but her chest felt heavy enough to crack.

She had left London in a storm of words she didn't mean. A fight with her sister, a breakup she wasn't ready for, a career she wasn't sure she wanted anymore—everything had tangled into one big knot. So she'd done the only thing that felt right. She'd bought the cheapest ticket she could find on impulse and boarded the first train leaving the city.

She didn't even know where she was going.

The countryside outside was green and endless, rolling hills giving way to sleepy villages. The world outside looked peaceful in a way her mind wasn't.

The voice of the train announcer crackled over the intercom, "Next stop: Hartwell-on-Sea."
