"Oh! What is this?!"
A moment later, Professor Oak's shocked voice came roaring through the other end of the video call.
His face immediately filled the entire screen, pressing right up against the camera and blocking everything else from view.
Silas almost jumped.
"Tell me, Silas! Where did you record this footage!? This is a groundbreaking discovery in Pokémon evolutionary history!
This—this is an Eevee!!"
Professor Oak's booming voice rang so loudly that Silas's ears buzzed for several seconds afterward.
"It was somewhere in Exeggutor Forest, Professor Oak," Silas quickly explained, feeling like Oak might start chewing him out the moment he didn't answer.
"I originally went there to find a birthday gift for the young heir of the Sasaki family. During the chase, one of the Eevee suddenly erupted into evolution light right there among the group.
Evolving without any Evolution Stone at all—I found it unbelievable, so I recorded it."
Professor Oak slowly calmed himself — after all, he was still one of the most experienced researchers in the field.
"This Pokémon has appeared once in a blurry photo from Sinnoh as well, but it quickly vanished, and no one knew what it evolved from.
Back then, some guessed from its appearance that it might be a new Eevee evolution, but no one could prove it. From the footage you've taken, it's now almost certain: this is a newly discovered evolutionary form of Eevee."
Professor Oak's voice was full of excitement.
"This is huge! The academic world has long theorized that Eevee's unstable genes allow it to evolve into different forms based on external stimuli — but up to now, the only confirmed methods were the Thunder, Water, and Fire Stones.
No one has ever witnessed an Eevee evolution outside those three."
Silas nodded and added, "The spot where it happened didn't seem special at all. There wasn't even a Leaf Stone nearby—just a very peculiar boulder completely covered in moss.
My guess is that either it has to do with the environment, or more likely, that specific rock."
Professor Oak rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"It probably has little to do with the habitat itself—though if there were too many Leaf Stones in the area, energy fluctuations might affect it.
That moss-covered boulder… those are extremely rare. I've seen reports of similar stones in other regions, but tests showed no energy signature, so they were considered a natural anomaly.
From what you've shown me, we definitely can't rule out that rock as the catalyst for this evolution."
The professor's eyes lit up.
"Send me the exact location immediately. I'm on my way there right now to run tests."
"Huh?" Silas couldn't help blurting out. That was fast.
He thought Oak would send someone over slowly like last time…
"What do you mean huh? I'm heading to Nameless City right away! And besides, I've also received an invitation from the Sasaki family myself—I may as well stop by to celebrate!"
Professor Oak beamed with enthusiasm.
Silas could only send over the marked location on his map.
"Good! Head back over there and wait for me—I'll be there soon!" And with that, Oak hung up.
Staring at the now black screen, Silas sighed helplessly.
Others made three trips to visit wise men… he was making three trips back to a forest.
Standing up, he broke into a jog back toward the mossy rock.
As for whether Professor Oak could really arrive quickly—it wasn't just the rumored connection between Oak and Celebi… even ignoring that, Professor Oak's Dragonite was famous.
Silas suspected it might even be stronger than Lance's.
A normal Dragonite could fly at speeds up to around 2,500 km/h—far faster than Silas's own Pidgeot, not to mention the truly elite individuals among their species.
And Oak definitely wasn't afraid of heights.
Silas arrived back before the moss-covered boulder and stared up at it, mind turning to all things Eevee.
Leafeon being photographed in the wild wasn't entirely surprising—even Glaceon being caught on film wouldn't be impossible. The world was enormous; surely a few lucky souls were bound to stumble upon them.
As for Espeon and Umbreon—that was nearly impossible, let alone Sylveon. Those evolutions required very high friendship or specific conditions. Quite difficult to achieve naturally.
Most Trainers chose to use evolution stones early to evolve Eevee into one of the known three— Jolteon, Vaporeon, or Flareon — because they were very powerful in their own right.
It was a fast way to power up. Otherwise, an unevolved Eevee's abilities were simply too lacking.
And even if kept as a pet, its friendship still had a ceiling.
All in all, everything had gone according to plan. If things went smoothly, this discovery could earn him major credit points in the Pokémon League's records.
Silas's gaze sharpened. He might not be interested in climbing the League's political ladder anymore—but such accomplishments came with many benefits, including access to pseudo-legendary Pokémon. Especially those with excellent potential — and most of those opportunities came directly from the League.
"Rooo~"
A thunderous dragon's cry echoed overhead.
An enormous orange Dragonite swooped down with Professor Oak seated on its back. Its tiny wings beat furiously as it halted at a perfect hover about ten centimeters above ground.
Only a small puff of dust was kicked up.
Silas suddenly felt the world become warmer — he had a Pidgeot, so he knew precisely what this kind of effortless aerial control meant.
"You really have given us a huge surprise this time!"
Professor Oak slid off Dragonite's back, walking over with a mixture of awe and praise.
"I just got lucky, that's all," Silas said humbly.
"Most people don't have your kind of luck — otherwise evolution research wouldn't still be such a colossal puzzle," Oak shook his head. "I rushed over first to confirm it myself. If it's real, I'll need Dr. Rowan to analyze further — he's the real expert on evolution."
With that, he took out six Poké Balls from his belt.
As a Professor, Silas knew the usual carrying limits didn't apply to Oak.
"Come on out, everyone!"
With a flick of his hands, six Eevee appeared all in a row.
"We've wanted to build a dedicated Eevee Evolution Institute for years, but unfortunately we never succeeded — simply because no one could confirm a fourth evolution method beyond the elemental stones.
If this works out, you'll have made an enormous contribution," Oak mumbled to himself, then smiled at Silas.
He frowned slightly — none of the six Eevee were showing even a flicker of evolution light.
He didn't suspect Silas of lying. Even aside from the Pokédex video (which was nearly impossible to fake), there was no benefit in Silas doing so.
"Sigh… I knew it, evolution isn't that easy," Oak breathed.
Silas felt awkward beside him — six Eevee, not one reacting? That seemed far too unlucky.
"It's fine, perfectly normal," Oak reassured him with a smile. "Your video proves there's something special here. Otherwise why would Eevee evolve here and not anywhere else?"
"Wait — Professor Oak! Look!"
Silas's eyes lit up, and Oak felt a sudden flash beside him.
Spinning around, he saw one of the restless Eevee standing atop the moss-covered boulder — glowing with evolution light.
The other five Eevee curiously sniffed around the base… but remained completely unaffected.
Both men trembled with excitement — Silas half-acting and half-relieved deep inside.
When the glow faded, a brand-new Pokémon stood where Eevee once was — a leafy, quadruped fox-like creature.
"Pokemon!!" Professor Oak squealed as he ran forward, scooping it into his arms. "Ahh! That fresh grass aroma!"
Leafeon froze stiff — just as it was about to struggle, a crushing pressure descended upon it. Sensing a strength it could not comprehend, it wisely chose to remain perfectly still and friendly.
Silas had been worried Oak might get hurt, but when he saw the Leafeon's obedient posture, he said admiringly, "As expected of Professor Oak — your connection with Pokémon is unbelievable."
"Leaf-shaped ears… green fur… sweet scent…," Oak muttered, pulling a magnifying lens from somewhere and thoroughly inspecting the new evolution.
"From appearance alone, we can assume it's Grass-type — but I'll need more data before confirming it officially," he said to Silas, who had stepped closer. "Since you're the one who discovered this new evolution, you have the honor of naming it. What do you want to call it?"
"Hmm… how about Leafeon?" Silas blurted out. "Given all the leaves on its body."
"Leafeon, hm? I thought you might go with 'Grass-eon' — but yes, this is better," Oak looked slightly disappointed but nodded. "It's a good name."
Silas wiped imaginary sweat from his brow. Grass-eon… now that would've been outrageous.
Unaware of his thoughts, Oak recalled all six Eevee — including the newly evolved Leafeon and opened his Pokédex, rapidly tapping something into it.
With a flash of white light, the six Poké Balls vanished.
"That's a new feature developed by Researcher Bill in Goldenrod — still in beta. Won't be public for a while," Oak explained, noticing Silas's curious stare.
Silas pretended to suddenly understand and nodded.
"No need to rush analyzing things. That rock isn't going anywhere," Oak said with a grin. "Let's go attend the Sasaki banquet first."
"Dragonite, stay here and keep watch," he instructed his trusted partner. "Once my old friends arrive, fly straight back to the lab's rear valley."
Dragonite smiled warmly and nodded.
Silas looked at it with envy — a Dragonite… Now that's a Pokémon to dream about.
