Carved into the stone tablet were the words: "STONE TOWN."
"Want me to come pick you up?" the man on the other end of the line asked casually.
Silas responded just as offhandedly, "I don't think that's necessary. I can pretty much see your mansion from the town gate."
"Haha, fair enough. I'll just wait for you at home then." The man chuckled heartily and ended the call without further chatter.
Silas curled his lip and put away his wristwatch, then followed the stone-paved path into the small town.
At the end of the path, just as he had said, he could vaguely make out an ultra-luxurious, massive villa complex built right into the base of a mountain.
That was the home of the Three Brothers of Stone Town, and also the residence of one of the largest families in the town—the Eevee Clan.
Stone Town was located near Evolution Mountain in the Kanto region and was the largest source of evolution stones in all of Kanto.
The area boasted seven to eight veins of evolution stones, along with many rare companion metals.
As the name implied, the Eevee Clan specialized in raising Eevee and its evolution forms—specifically the three that require evolution stones: Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon.
Aside from being expensive, they were also incredibly strong.
This generation was led by three brothers, each specializing in one of the three types, and thus they had come to be known by outsiders as the Eevee Trio of Stone Town.
They were born and raised in Stone Town, and with the support of the Pokémon League, the Eevee Clan had risen from a humble background to become a well-known and respected family within just a couple of decades.
Their rise was due to one core trait—extravagance! Absolute, unrestrained extravagance!
Every generation of young adults in the Eevee Clan, upon reaching adulthood, would host a Pokémon Garden Party.
On that day, any Trainer who brought a Pokémon that evolved using an evolution stone would be gifted—completely free of charge—a matching stone of 70–80 quality to trigger the evolution.
No birthright or age restrictions—just one requirement: each person could only attend once, and had to register.
Although the stones had to be used on-site, the market value of such a high-quality evolution stone was in the millions. Most Trainers could never afford one.
So, many Trainers came hoping to get lucky. If they succeeded, they'd hit the jackpot.
The Eevee Clan could afford to be generous thanks to a unique benefit granted to all residents of Stone Town by the League: every adult could enter the evolution stone mines for a two-hour expedition, and all the stones they collected during that time were theirs to keep.
Don't underestimate two hours—because the League enforced strict sustainability policies to preserve the mines, and mining was tightly regulated each year.
Rumor had it that in the Evolution Mountain mines, evolution stones were nearly everywhere. In just one hour, someone could collect nearly a hundred.
So their immense wealth? Entirely understandable.
You might wonder if too many people attending the party would be a problem. But the catch was—the timing of the party was completely random. Each new adult could host one within a year of their coming of age, based entirely on mood. Even if you camped outside every day, one moment of inattention could mean missing your chance.
Of course, as the saying goes: "A man's wealth is his crime." Even with the League's protection and only sipping from the pot, their fortune was enough to make people jealous.
To protect themselves from ill-intentioned individuals, the entire town—families and residents alike—agreed on a single strategy: build strong relationships with all of Kanto's Gyms.
That's why they sponsored numerous small-scale tournaments between Gyms every year—often naming the events after themselves, with extremely generous prizes for the champions.
Surprisingly, this tactic worked well. Combined with the fact that most residents rarely left the town, their safety was thoroughly protected by both the League and the Gyms.
Dedicated security officers from the League and the Gyms were stationed in the town. If anything ever went wrong, help would arrive within a minute to apprehend any criminals.
Meanwhile, the townspeople did their best to strengthen themselves using these resources. Though still limited by time, their overall strength was steadily rising.
As for how Silas became friends with the three brothers of Stone Town—that traced back to a match aboard the S.S. Anne.
At the time, the youngest of the three brothers, Pyro, had been aboard the ship watching the tournament. He had been deeply impressed by Silas's Combusken.
Pyro had chosen Flareon as his Eeveelution, showing his love for Fire-type Pokémon.
Seeing how well Silas had raised his Combusken, combined with his championship status and obvious talent, Pyro naturally wanted to get acquainted.
Silas didn't mind. After a few conversations, they quickly became friendly.
This visit to Stone Town was specifically in response to Pyro's invitation—Silas wouldn't have gone out of his way otherwise.
Ding-dong.
Silas rang the doorbell.
"Coming, coming!" Pyro's voice came through the intercom—he must have been waiting a while.
Soon enough, a tall, skinny young man with bright red hair came jogging to the door.
"Welcome~!" he said, striking an exaggerated pose as he bowed.
Silas rolled his eyes. "Cut the act and let me in. I'm exhausted."
Pyro laughed heartily and didn't argue. He led Silas into the mansion's guest room.
"So basically, you want me to help pick out an Eevee?" Silas raised an eyebrow, looking at Pyro, who had just given him an incredibly detailed explanation.
"Exactly. Our fourth brother, Mikey, was just born, and as big brothers, we naturally want to prepare his future Pokémon," Pyro nodded.
"And this will also help guide his future decision on which form to evolve his Eevee into!"
Silas teased, "Shouldn't this be up to your brother in the future? If all three of you get involved, you'll probably end up in a shouting match."
"At the very least, if Mikey chooses the Eevee I picked, I'll have a solid reason to convince him to evolve it into Flareon—like me!"
Seeing Pyro's overly optimistic logic, Silas held back a sarcastic remark. With each of the three brothers liking a different type of Eeveelution, this was bound to become complicated.
As for the legal age to officially own Pokémon—there were endless loopholes around that. For a child, it could simply be considered a pet for now.
"So, what kind of personality are you looking for in this Eevee?" Silas asked.
"Hmm… probably something cute and introverted," Pyro thought aloud. "Mikey has that kind of personality, and if the Eevee is too hyperactive, he might not be comfortable. A more introverted one could become more outgoing as they play together."
Silas nodded slightly, indicating he understood.
As for the matter of potential or talent, the Eevee family had a dedicated breeding facility for Eevee. All Silas had to do was pick one from there—he didn't need to worry about anything else.
In fact, the family's own hired breeders could've made the selection, but as Pyro explained it, that wouldn't reflect the care and thoughtfulness of an older brother.
If they had any skill in this area themselves, the three brothers would've handled it personally.
So, the three of them decided to each find a close friend to pick one Eevee, and then let their youngest brother Mikey make the final choice himself.
Pyro's chosen friend was Silas.
"I don't even have a breeder's license," Silas had told Pyro at the time.
"That thing's just a formality. I know what you're capable of," Pyro said without a hint of doubt. Though they hadn't known each other for too long, during their many conversations Pyro had already been thoroughly impressed by Silas's extensive knowledge and abilities.
Silas couldn't help but admit—someone putting that much faith in you, it's hard not to feel a bit of warmth in return.
"So, when do we go check them out?" Silas asked as he took a sip of tea, glancing toward Pyro.
Pyro checked his wristwatch. "In just a few minutes. You got here at the perfect time—my second brother's inside picking his Eevee with his friend right now."
"Alright." Silas shrugged. "I've got time."
After all, he had come to Stone Town at Pyro's request to rest up for the night. He could pick the Eevee anytime before leaving in the morning.
With that, the two of them began chatting. Most of the conversation centered around Pyro asking how Silas trained Fire-type Pokémon. Silas shared a few select insights.
Judging by Pyro's occasional nods, Silas couldn't quite tell if the guy was actually following or just pretending. After all, Pyro's academic performance had never been great.
Ding~
Pyro's watch lit up with a message. Silas had a feeling—it was probably time to go.
Sure enough, Pyro read the message and grinned. "Let's go! My second brother's done picking. Now it's my turn. Once we've picked one, we'll bring them straight to Mikey and let him choose for himself."
He stood up impatiently and rushed for the door, urging Silas to follow quickly.
Silas sighed, shaking his head with a helpless smile. Youth sure is restless. He followed behind at a relaxed pace.
The two of them made their way to the rear of the estate, where a fully equipped breeding facility was located.
As they entered, they were greeted by the sight of dozens of Eevee darting around on the floor.
"Whoa," Silas couldn't help but mutter. Even knowing this family had an insane number of Eevee, this was something else.
After all, Eevee were extremely popular and valuable, not just because they were adorable, but also due to their potential for evolution.
They were generally light brown with a fluffy cream-colored ruff around their neck and a bushy tail tipped in the same shade. Their legs were short and slim, built for nimbleness, and their big brown eyes blinked curiously at everything. Their long, rabbit-like ears twitched constantly, and their tiny black noses twitched in sync to sense their surroundings.
Silas crouched down and began petting a few Eevee. Their silky fur felt unbelievably smooth—absolutely delightful to the touch.
"Well, I'll leave it to you now," Pyro said with his hands pressed together in a pleading gesture.
"No problem, just give me some time," Silas responded, and immediately got to work, starting his evaluation of each Eevee.
This was no easy task.
A Pokémon's personality is often revealed through its habits, movements, and even the condition of its fur. Without a strong knowledge base, determining a Pokémon's personality in a short time was nearly impossible.
Worse, sometimes a Pokémon's outward behavior could be totally different from its true nature—this is where a breeder's experience came into play.
And with so many Eevee here, the workload and complexity were even greater. If not for Silas's photographic memory, his eyes would've been swimming already.
He silently observed, occasionally jotting down notes about specific Eevee.
