A deep rumble echoed through the Akihabara Research Lab as a massive rock-type Pokémon appeared before Silas.
"Wow, this guy's gotten huge," Silas said with a laugh, reaching out to pat its hard, rocky body.
Compared to its previous form's younger, crisper cry, Gigalith's voice was deeper—closer to that of a grown man.
In many ways, evolution for a Pokémon is also a step into maturity.
Gigalith's body consisted of one massive core and four dark indigo boulders. Its central body resembled a cone, with an orange crystalline core embedded both at the center of its chest and its back.
Gray, band-like connectors joined its body to its large, triangular legs.
Its body and limbs were symmetrically covered in numerous sharp-edged orange crystals, forming what looked like ear and claw-like structures.
Unlike its earlier forms, which perceived the world through energy cores, Gigalith now possessed two fully-formed eyes: yellow outer rings, orange irises, and black pupils.
"Well-bred, I must say! Its height clearly exceeds the species average. Judging by the brightness of those energy crystals, I'd say it's mastered beam-type moves quite well," Professor Akihabara's voice came from the holographic projection, full of admiration.
Though most of his recent efforts had been focused on teleportation systems, Professor Akihabara had his own unique insights when it came to Pokémon training.
"It's all thanks to your invention, Professor," Silas replied sincerely. "Without your teleportation system, trade evolutions wouldn't even exist."
That was no exaggeration. Without Professor Akihabara's teleportation device, humanity might still be in the dark about the mechanics of trade-based evolution.
"This is my proudest creation!" the professor beamed without a hint of modesty—and rightly so. His invention had earned him a permanent place in the history of Pokémon evolution.
"But there are more and more rising stars these days. I heard from Professor Oak recently—there's a researcher named Bill in Goldenrod City. He's built on my teleportation system and made even further breakthroughs. Supposedly, there's even talk of updating the Pokédex based on his findings."
He sighed with a mix of pride and resignation.
Bill—future Pokémon researcher. Silas recognized the name. He was best known for the storyline involving the giant Dragonite of the future. But Bill was more than that: a charming, wealthy genius who developed the Pokémon Storage System. By utilizing a Pokémon's natural ability to convert itself into digital signals while inside a Poké Ball, he allowed them to be stored directly in computer databases via the teleportation network.
"Now that's something I look forward to," Silas smiled thoughtfully.
"Hahaha! But I'm shifting my focus to the human teleportation system now. Let them carry the rest forward," Professor Akihabara said, his eyes gleaming with mad-scientist enthusiasm.
Silas gave a polite smile, glanced once more at Gigalith, and returned it to its Poké Ball before taking his leave.
Behind him, the professor's energetic voice echoed through the halls:
"Unit Zero! Prototype One! Let's update the program once again!"
As Silas made his way back, he thought about the information his personal Unit Zero had just displayed about Gigalith:
[Gigalith]
Category: Compressed Pokémon
Type: Rock
Height: 1.95 meters (Average: 1.7 meters)
Weight: 312 kg (Average: 260 kg)
Ability: Sand Stream (Automatically summons a sandstorm upon entering battle)
Hidden Ability: Sand Force (Boosts the power of Rock-, Ground-, and Steel-type moves during sandstorms)
Notable Moves (including recent additions):
Sandstorm, Rock Tomb, Rock Blast,Sand Tomb, Protect, HeavySlam, Stomp, Earthquake, Flash Cannon, Solar Beam
Level: 34 (Advanced tier)
Potential: Champion-tier
Training Strategy:
A synergy between Sand Stream and Sand Force under weather conditions.
Rock-type nutrients administered in customized ratios.
Everything about Gigalith aligned with what Silas had expected—it met his projections precisely.
The only real surprise was the Grass-type move, Solar Beam.
That gave Gigalith a powerful counter against its biggest weakness: Water-types.
In fact, Silas realized something else—if Gigalith had already learned Flash Cannon and Solar Beam, it wouldn't be too difficult for it to grasp Hyper Beam as well, another high-powered beam attack.
After all, Flash Cannon and Solar Beam had base powers of 80 and 120, respectively. It wouldn't take much to push that into Hyper Beam's 150 power tier.
Come to think of it, Professor Akihabara had nailed it when he said Gigalith was well-versed in beam-type moves.
No wonder. No Pokémon professor is ever "just" a professor.
This was Gigalith's unique strength: it could use the orange crystals spread across its body to absorb solar energy, which was then concentrated within its core to generate a powerful reaction—firing energy blasts from its mouth.
In terms of natural Solar Beam affinity, Gigalith wasn't necessarily inferior to Grass-types. It might even surpass them.
Its mastery over moves like Stomp and Earthquake also stemmed from its special physiology. By using its core to generate bursts of compressed energy, moving mountains and splitting the earth was no exaggeration.
According to current records, it's said that a Gigalith once even knocked an entire mountain into the air!
Silas exhaled. Of course, after evolving into Gigalith, its appearance had finally caught up with the general standard of looks within his team.
Back in its Boldore stage, it looked more like an oversized rocky crab with too few legs. But after evolving into Gigalith, its appearance resembled a rock dragon even more.
Unfortunately, since Rock-type Pokémon aren't particularly suited for long-term riding due to their backs being so rough, and because Gigalith wasn't known for its speed, it couldn't really serve as a travel mount—though it would've made an excellent one if it could.
Silas carried Togepi in his arms, walking along a forest trail, lost in thought.
By his calculations, there was less than half a year left before the next Kanto Indigo League tournament would begin. As of now, he had barely four Pokémon he could count as full-fledged fighters.
Those four were Pidgeot, Blaziken, Gigalith, and Rhydon.
That meant the next phase of training would have to focus on raising his two newest additions: Snivy and Togepi.
Snivy was relatively easy. With normal training, it should reach level 40+ and pesode-elite peak status by the time the tournament started.
Togepi, however, was a different story. Whether it could evolve into Togetic in time would depend entirely on how quickly it bonded with him and reached the required level of friendship.
If the evolution came too late, he'd have no choice but to evolve it during the tournament using a Shiny Stone.
After all, evolving twice in quick succession can harm a Pokémon's body and limit its potential. The overwhelming energy that floods the body during consecutive evolutions is not always a good thing.
Still, he didn't think it would take too long. With a Soothe Bell around its neck and Silas holding it close every day, their bond should strengthen quickly or so he thought.
"Pika~!"
A group of yellow electric rodents appeared on the path ahead—Pikachu.
Silas glanced around, checking his surroundings. He realized he'd reached the Pikachu Forest. No wonder.
Although Pikachu were a fairly common species—you could find them in both forests and cities—it was rare to see so many gathered in one place. In the Kanto region, that kind of sight was unique to this forest alone.
The forest was named after them, so one could imagine just how many Pikachu lived here.
Scorched patches of grass by the roadside were one of the Pikachu Forest's iconic features.
Because Pikachu store electricity in their bodies, they regularly need to discharge it—whether on purpose or not—otherwise, the buildup could paralyze or even kill them. They often use their tails, like lightning rods, to safely release excess power.
The scorched patches were the result of this behavior—a kind of natural landscape.
Why "natural landscape"? Because the burned grass came in all shapes and sizes. The Pikachu here were like wild artists, electrocuting abstract patterns into the earth. This even attracted some tourists on occasion.
"Pika pika~"
The Pikachu group surrounded Silas. Their bright yellow bodies dazzled him, and their tall, upright tails occasionally brushed against his legs.
Togepi's eyes widened with curiosity as it stared at them.
The Pikachu sniffed around Silas, confirming he wasn't a threat, then quickly scattered.
Usually, they were very gentle in nature—as long as you didn't try to yank their tails while they were standing upright sensing danger (as noted by Professor Oak).
Before leaving, one Pikachu even used Thunderbolt to zap a berry off a tree and handed it to Silas.
The roasted berry gave off a delicious aroma.
"For us? Thank you!" Silas squatted down, took the berry, and expressed his thanks.
"Pika~" The Pikachu waved a paw and darted back to its group. Under the sunlight, specks of glittering light danced across its body—a unique trait of Pikachu native to the Kanto region.
Silas took a bite of the berry. It definitely tasted better than a raw one.
Luckily, that Pikachu was an adult. If a rookie had tried that, the berry probably would've been scorched beyond recognition.
The Pikachu line had access to a move that not even Legendary Pokémon could learn—Volt Tackle.
If Pikachu weren't so limited by its base stats—even with the Light Ball raising its offensive power—it might have been a more viable combatant. Silas would've seriously considered training one.
At least in terms of move versatility and type coverage, Pikachu was still impressive.
As for " Ash's Pikachu", well… that was an entirely different being altogether.
"Togepi~"
Togepi tugged at Silas's sleeve.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Silas smiled apologetically. "Ah, sorry. I was daydreaming. Here, you have a taste too."
With a sheepish grin, he handed the berry to Togepi.
"Togepi~"
Togepi generously forgave Silas. From what it had learned from its seniors, its Trainer often liked spacing out for no apparent reason.
After taking a bite of the roasted berry, it smiled happily.
The trainer and his partner continued down the path.
Ling~
Silas's wristwatch vibrated, and he answered the call.
"Hey, Silas, have you arrived yet?" A male voice asked.
"I'm at the town entrance," Silas replied, stopping to look at a giant stone monument by the roadside.
