Chapter 158 - Chapter 158: The Porygon Incident and the Teleportation System

"This is just a small token of appreciation from us as a couple—only fifty million."

"And here's our business card. If there's ever anything we can do for you, please don't hesitate to contact us."

The couple in front of Silas spoke with firm resolve, insisting on giving him the items.

Fifty million as a 'small token'? Silas couldn't help but be amazed. No wonder they can afford to charter a helicopter for sightseeing.

Seeing that there was no room to decline, Silas accepted the business card and bank card half-willingly.

"Dazan & Co., Aerial Machinery Corporation – Contact: XXXXXXXX"

That was the line printed on the card.

"Dazan…" Silas paused in surprise when he saw the name.

"We truly appreciate everything you've done. We'll take our leave now, and we apologize for all the trouble we've caused," Mr. and Mrs. Dazan removed their hats and bowed deeply to everyone at the Ranger Headquarters while holding their child tightly.

Silas watched thoughtfully as the family walked back toward their helicopter.

Officer Jenny and the other officers began to disperse as well—they still had plenty of work to do. With such a large nature reserve, there was no shortage of daily responsibilities.

Still, it wasn't every day that a parent accidentally dropped their child from a helicopter.

"Officer Jenny, I'll take my leave now," Silas said with a nod toward Jenny Lynn.

"I'll give you a ride. This is the heart of the preserve—it's a long way back to the city," Jenny Lynn offered as she started up her jeep.

"Thanks. I appreciate it." Silas hesitated for a moment before accepting, recalling his Blaziken that had been sticking by his side and returning it to its Poké Ball.

It had taken nearly ten minutes to drive in at high speed earlier—walking out on foot would take ages.

He had only planned to cross the outer regions of the preserve, but the unexpected events had derailed his plans.

Once seated in the passenger seat, Jenny Lynn drove the jeep away from the tropical jungle.

"So, where are you headed next?" she asked as she cruised steadily down the dirt road.

"I'm going to Matcha City. I have something I need to discuss with Professor Akihabara over there," Silas replied, leaning out the window and looking at the endless green fields outside.

"Matcha City, huh…" Jenny Lynn's voice held a note of nostalgia. "Ever since the panic incident, that place has been mostly deserted."

Silas nodded slightly, though it was unclear whether it was the wind or agreement that caused the motion.

The Panic Incident—better known as the Porygon Incident—stemmed from the first artificially-created Pokémon in modern history: Porygon.

According to Silph Co. reports, Porygon was developed by a Pokémon Research Institute (specifically the Cinnabar Research Lab on Cinnabar Island). It was designed to assist humans with scientific research, especially in cyberspace environments, where it could freely navigate digital networks.

Professor Akihabara, the inventor of the teleportation system, borrowed a Porygon to test the system's stability and uncover any remaining bugs. However, during the experiment, something went terribly wrong.

According to data collected by the Pokémon League, at the exact moment of testing, a total of 685 individuals across the Kanto region experienced adverse effects. The cause was abnormally fast red and blue flashing lights generated by the computers or TVs they were using at the time—flashes lasting up to 112 seconds (approximately 0.08 seconds each), extremely intense and repetitive.

208 people fell into serious comas and had to be rushed to Pokémon Centers for emergency treatment.

Subsequent investigations revealed that during Porygon's system-check process, a portion of malware within the computers mutated unexpectedly. Combined with the fact that Matcha City's main power source was derived from Pikachu-generated electricity, the two factors caused an unpredictable interaction that led to the incident.

Fortunately, all affected individuals were successfully treated by Nurse Joy and made full recoveries.

Additionally, the teleportation system was stabilized afterward.

However, Matcha City never quite recovered. It became a place people avoided.

"All right, I'll drop you off here," Jenny Lynn said. "Just follow this road and you'll reach a police station. Keep heading south from there, and you'll find Matcha City's Pokémon Center."

The drive through the nature preserve had been peaceful, showcasing the harmony between Pokémon and nature. Eventually, Jenny Lynn brought the jeep to a stop at the reserve's edge.

Pointing down the road with familiarity, she gave Silas the directions with a friendly smile.

"Thank you, Officer Jenny!" Silas jumped down from the jeep with ease. "Until we meet again."

"Until we meet again~" Jenny Lynn called out as she drove off into the distance.

Silas watched the jeep disappear over the horizon, stretched his limbs, and started walking along the road.

The area was eerily quiet, devoid of any signs of human life. The weeds along the path were dried and yellowed.

Silas shook his head. People's feelings toward Pokémon were always so complicated. They cherished their own partners and considered them family, yet Pokémon associated with disasters were feared and shunned.

Everyone knew that the power Pokémon held wasn't something ordinary people could control.

That was why Pokémon like Absol were so unwelcome in the past—even though they appeared to warn people of impending disasters, they were still blamed and labeled as harbingers of catastrophe after the events occurred.

Silas unconsciously quickened his pace.

Passing a standard-looking police station, he soon spotted the distinct structure of Matcha City's Pokémon Center.

Unlike typical Pokémon Centers, this one resembled a circus tent with a large, pink letter "P" on the roof, giving it a charming and whimsical appearance.

Entering the center, Silas and a few of his Pokémon grabbed some lunch before he approached the front desk.

"Hello, Nurse Joy. I wanted to ask—is Professor Akihabara's lab located here?"

"Yes, it is. Just go out back and you'll see a large western-style house—that's his lab. If you plan to use the teleportation system, be sure to contact Professor Akihabara in advance," she said helpfully.

Nurse Joy at the front desk provided the directions with care.

After thanking her, Silas made his way outside. As for contacting the professor ahead of time—someone else had already taken care of that.

Taking a path around the back of the Pokémon Center, Silas found himself in front of a Western-style house—half of it newly renovated, the other half visibly worn. He pressed the doorbell.

"Ding ding ding~"

After a few chimes, a voice answered through the intercom at the door.

"Hello, this is the Akihabara Research Lab. Who is this?"

"Hi, this is Silas Alaric. I have an appointment from Pewter Gym. Please open the door."

Silas responded smoothly, clearly familiar with the procedure.

"Alright... one moment... Pewter... Alaric... ah! Found it. Please come in!"

It sounded like the person on the other end was searching through a record log. After a short pause, the door buzzed open.

"Much appreciated."

Silas stepped through the entrance.

The lighting inside flickered weakly, casting unstable and dim illumination across the hallway.

With a calm expression, Silas walked all the way to the deepest part of the house, stopping before a large white door that was tightly shut.

Looking around, he couldn't find a doorbell, so he simply knocked.

"Coming, coming!" called out a voice from within.

The door opened quickly, and Silas stepped inside—only to be surprised by the full-scale holographic projection before him.

"Hello, you must be Silas Alaric," the projection spoke.

"Yes, that's me," Silas nodded. "Professor Akihabara... what's going on here?"

The hologram showed none other than Professor Akihabara himself, a slightly stout man with thick glasses that looked like they were powered by industrial-strength lenses. He had a rounded teal-colored bowl cut and wore an unbuttoned white lab coat over a yellow shirt.

"I'm currently working on a new human teleportation system. Right now, I'm using Unit Zero to digitize myself into cyberspace."

Professor Akihabara's words were brief but packed with information.

Silas was momentarily speechless. Digitizing humans now? Really treating people like Pokémon, huh? That "Unit Zero" he mentioned—it must be Porygon, right? So it's still here?

"You're here to use the Pokémon teleportation system, right? It's over in that corner. The operation is simple—same as the basic version you find in normal Pokémon Centers."

"I'm also planning to replicate this full version and roll it out to other Pokémon Centers soon. With the help of Unit Zero and the original prototype, most of the bugs have already been ironed out," Professor Akihabara added with a cheerful grin.

"Alright, then I won't trouble you, Professor. Please carry on with your research," Silas said quickly, nodding in appreciation as he walked over to the corner where the teleportation system was located.

The machine in front of him was significantly larger than the ones found in Pokémon Centers—and, of course, far more capable.

He powered up the computer and placed a call to Pewter Gym.

"Alright, Jiro—I'll leave it in your hands," Silas said with a smile.

"No problem, Silas. Starting the transfer now," came the reply from Jiro, younger brother of Brock. According to him, Brock was still deep in intense training.

Silas pulled out a Luxury Ball, placed it into the half-spherical slot on the teleportation device, and—with excitement growing—pressed the transfer button.

A white light began to swirl around the Luxury Ball. Then, in a flash, it vanished.

Inside, the Pokémon was undergoing a transformation triggered by unknown energies. Its form began to shift—then solidified as the light faded.

Without hesitation, Jiro on the other end began the return transfer immediately.

This time, the transfer light flickered with the usual red glow.

Silas picked up the returned Luxury Ball and chatted briefly with Jiro before eagerly hanging up the call.

Jiro, understanding Silas's anticipation, fulfilled his role as a facilitator and then returned to handling Gym duties.

"Let me see it too—what kind of Pokémon did you get?"

Just as Silas was inspecting the Luxury Ball from every angle, trying to get a glimpse of the miniaturized Pokémon inside, Professor Akihabara's voice came again from behind.

"Uh... Is it alright if I let it out here? It's kinda big," Silas asked, scratching his head.

"No problem. Worst-case scenario, we'll just rebuild the room. As long as the power stays on, everything's fine," Professor Akihabara said casually, completely unbothered.

Since the professor was so unconcerned, Silas didn't hold back.

"Alright then—come on out, Gigalith!"

"Gigalith!"
