"So that means we'll have to enter the Kangaskhan's habitat to search for the child?" Silas asked.
Officer Jenny nodded. "Yes. The Kangaskhan around here are usually gentle by nature, so the child's safety shouldn't be a major issue. The only concern is if one of them decides to adopt the child as her own and places him in her pouch. If that happens, things could get complicated."
Silas nodded thoughtfully. That wasn't unheard of.
Kangaskhan, also known as the Parent Pokémon, are bipedal, dinosaur-like creatures. Most of their body is brown, while their ears and underbelly are yellowish-grey. Their shoulders and legs are reinforced with armored plates, likely for protection.
In the pouch on their stomach rests their young a baby Kangaskhan, which is a lighter shade of purple and resembles its mother in appearance.
These baby Kangaskhan almost never leave the pouch until they're about three years old. During this time, if anyone attempts to harm their baby, the mother will go berserk.
There are even documented cases of Kangaskhan without a child adopting and raising lost human children as their own.
As for their power? Well, you don't get nicknamed "Dragon Beasts" for nothing — and it's not just due to their appearance.
Some stronger individuals among them can even use Outrage, a Dragon-type move. Although it has a chaotic aftermath, the destructive power during its duration is immense.
Moreover, Kangaskhan are social creatures — they live in groups. If they get riled up, it can turn into a full-blown stampede.
About seven or eight minutes later, only a few Officers Jenny had gathered in the room.
"We don't have too many officers assigned to the Pokémon Reserve, and most have designated posts they must guard. Only six of us could make it here right now — including you, that makes seven," Officer Jenny Lynn explained to Silas.
Silas nodded. That made sense. This reserve spanned a massive area — no way a handful of officers could cover it all easily.
"Say, how come helicopters are still allowed to fly over this area?" Silas whispered to Officer Lynn.
"Hmm… they are, but only in this specific region of the forest," she replied in a hushed voice.
"Click… poor kid," Silas sighed quietly. "Thankfully, it's just Kangaskhan."
Officer Lynn nodded in agreement. After all, this tropical jungle was home to Pokémon like Victreebel, Tangrowth, Venomoth, and Mankey — poisonous or downright aggressive species.
Had the child fallen into one of their territories, the situation could've been far worse.
"This is a photo of the child. Everyone, take one," the senior Officer Jenny said as she returned from speaking with the parents. She passed around copies of the photo and began issuing orders.
"Aria, you're the strongest — take the child's parents and form a team of three.
"Lynn, you'll team up with this Trainer, Silas.
"The remaining four officers, pair up and enter from the east, west, south, and north, respectively. Search for the child's traces.
"Keep in contact — and do NOT act rashly."
"Yes, ma'am!"
Everyone sprang into action.
Officer Lynn and Silas carefully entered the western portion of the Kangaskhan habitat.
They were accompanied by an Arcanine and a Blaziken.
While they couldn't initiate combat, self-defense was still allowed, especially for law enforcement. In the reserve, these Officers Jenny were tasked with maintaining peace among Pokémon populations. Without access to tech, they had to rely on their Pokémon partners.
"There sure are a lot of Kangaskhan without babies around here," Silas commented as they made their way through the thick foliage.
It couldn't be helped. Even though Pokémon of similar Egg Groups can breed, most still prefer mates of the same species.
And since Kangaskhan are exclusively female, there's no male counterpart — which makes their reproduction rates lower than average.
Suddenly, Officer Lynn motioned toward Silas, indicating something ahead.
The two crouched behind a large tree trunk and peered forward.
There, inside the pouch of a Kangaskhan, was a human child.
Both of them let out a silent sigh — the worst-case scenario had happened.
"Let's report this to the others," Silas whispered.
Officer Lynn nodded and immediately radioed in their position.
Soon, all seven officers had gathered.
"Normally, how would you handle something like this?" Silas asked.
Nearby, the child's parents looked visibly distressed, but for safety's sake, they remained composed. Their restraint brought some relief to the officers watching them.
"It's… very difficult," came the voice of the senior Officer Jenny over the radio. She was also the head of the reserve.
"We have to prioritize the child's safety. It wouldn't be hard to defeat the Kangaskhan in battle, we'd just need to file a report with the Pokémon League.
"But there's no way to ensure the child wouldn't be injured during the fight. The shockwaves alone from a battle like that would be too much, especially at this close a range."
"I remember reading that Kangaskhan sometimes let their babies out to play," the child's father spoke up, keeping his tone steady.
"That's true," Officer Jenny acknowledged. "But with so few of us here, we can't guarantee we could handle the Kangaskhan herd's fury if we try to act during one of those moments."
Everyone fell silent. On the way in, they had already seen how many Kangaskhan lived here — and there was simply no way they could face down that kind of force.
"I've contacted the Celadon City headquarters. They suggested we request help from Gym Leader Giovanni, who possesses the Viridian Aura,he can communicate directly with Pokémon.
"But Gym Leader Giovanni is currently deep within the Viridian Forest. Reaching him could take a while," the senior Officer explained helplessly.
And more importantly, even if they could reach him — this forest fell under Celadon City's jurisdiction. If Giovanni chose not to intervene, they'd have no authority to force his hand.
"The most standard approach in this situation would be to allow the child to be raised by the Kangaskhan," the Senior Jenny continued. "According to past cases, the Kangaskhan would release the child to live independently when they reach around fifteen or sixteen years old. By that time, their aggression would've greatly diminished."
"That long?!" Silas couldn't help but exclaim.
Officer Jenny Lynn confirmed it with a nod. "That's how it usually goes."
"No way!" the child's parents responded with intense emotion.
Everyone understood. After all, if this route was followed, it would mean at least ten years before the child could return to his parents. No one could accept that outcome.
The bigger problem was that children raised entirely by Pokémon like Kangaskhan would likely have a very hard time reintegrating into human society.
The situation quickly reached a stalemate.
"Trainer Silas Alaric, we heard earlier that you're from Viridian City. You must know Gym Leader Giovanni, right?" the child's parents turned to Silas with pleading eyes. "If there's anything you can do to help, we'd be eternally grateful."
Silas gave a wry smile. "Sorry to disappoint, but my Pokédex was issued by Professor Oak in Pallet Town, not Viridian City. I've never even met Gym Leader Giovanni."
Officer Jenny Lynn also helped confirm his words.
The parents' hopeful expressions dimmed instantly.
Sigh… Silas sighed inwardly, falling into a moment of hesitation.
"…I'll try contacting someone else. She might be able to help."
He finally spoke.
Ordinarily, his personality wouldn't push him to volunteer for something like this. But looking at the worried couple in front of him, he couldn't help but think of his own parents from his previous life.
It had been nearly seventeen years since then… he had no idea how things were going back there.
Everyone turned their eyes to him again — especially the child's parents, their gaze filled with renewed hope.
Silas activated his wristwatch, ready to make a call—
"Silas, I'm here!"
Before he could finish dialing, a cheerful girl's voice rang out from behind.
Silas froze and lowered his hand with a speechless expression. Was this girl truly seeing the future, or was she just constantly spying on him?
Though the distance she had traveled must've been immense, it clearly didn't matter to Sabrina.
"It really was future sight!" Sabrina beamed, cheeks slightly flushed. Standing beside her, as always, was her Alakazam.
As for how she contacted him, it all traced back to that mysterious message that appeared on his wristwatch after he left Saffron City last time. Along with her contact was a note:
"If you're ever in trouble, call me. –Sabrina"
Silas rubbed his temple and muttered, "Lend me a hand, would you?"
"Sure thing~" Sabrina replied sweetly, her eyes sparkling. In an instant, blue psychic energy flared, and the Kangaskhan fell into a deep sleep.
Psychic-Type Move: Hypnosis.
Using Telekinesis, Sabrina gently levitated the child from the Kangaskhan's pouch and placed him safely in Silas's arms.
"That Trapinch and Togepi incident… was that you?" Silas asked quietly.
As for the people around them, there was no need to worry. From the moment Sabrina appeared, their eyes had all turned blue with a psychic glow. They wouldn't remember a thing.
Sabrina tilted her head with a mischievous smile. "I wouldn't know~"
Silas fell silent. That's basically a confession, isn't it? Could you at least try to come up with a better excuse next time? For someone who can see the future, saying "I don't know" sounds ridiculous.
"Well then, I've got things to do. I'm heading out. Next time you need help, don't hesitate to call again, okay?
As for them and the Kangaskhan none of them will remember anything. You can rest easy~"
Sabrina walked over to her Alakazam, placed a hand on its shoulder, waved playfully at Silas, and vanished in a flash of psychic blue light.
Watching her disappear, Silas was left wondering just what kind of person Sabrina really was. The only thing he could be sure of… was that she harbored no ill will toward him — quite the opposite, in fact.
Meanwhile, the others finally came to their senses — only to gape at the child now safely in Silas's arms.
"Ah!" The child's parents gasped involuntarily, then quickly regained their composure.
Silas gestured for everyone to leave the area and return to the ranger station before discussing anything further.
Everyone nodded and quickly evacuated, leaving only the sleeping Kangaskhan behind.
At the Pokémon Reserve Headquarters
Silas gave everyone a brief explanation — that it was Sabrina who intervened. With that, everything suddenly made sense to them, and they accepted it as only natural.
However, Silas couldn't help but notice that their gazes toward him had subtly changed — now mixed with a hint of awe and… fear?
Come on, isn't that a little dramatic? he thought.
"We truly can't thank you enough," the child's parents said, still holding their child tightly. "This is a small token of our appreciation please, accept it." They extended a bank card toward him.
"Uh, no, really — there's no need for that," Silas waved his hands quickly, refusing the offer.
