"Wooo~ Amazing!"
Arcanine sped across the wide grasslands of the Pokémon Rreserve with Silas on its back.
Silas leaned forward, spreading his arms as the wind rushed past him. It felt like he was soaring just above the ground. The sensation was exhilarating, and he couldn't help but shout with joy.
Arcanine was a large Pokémon by any measure. Its average height was 1.9 meters, and its weight was 155 kilograms—intimidating just by appearance alone.
What kind of scale is that?
In Silas's previous life, the largest Tibetan Mastiff ever recorded, when standing upright, was only around 1.8 meters tall and just slightly over 100 kilograms in weight.
And Arcanine's height was measured in its normal stance—not standing upright.
That alone painted a clear picture of its size.
"Arf!"
Arcanine barked excitedly.
It lived in vast, uninhabited grasslands, and loved to run freely. Its speed was said to rival the wind itself—according to legend, it could run 10,000 kilometers in a single day. It was also among the rare few Pokémon capable of learning the move Extreme Speed.
Whether by flames, fangs, claws, or its roar, Arcanine had a multitude of weapons at its disposal.
"All right, big guy—let's head back!"
Silas lay flat against Arcanine's back and called out. Officer Jenny was still waiting where they'd started. He'd had his fun.
Arcanine executed a slick drift, nearly throwing Silas off, and took off in the opposite direction, its four legs sprinting effortlessly across the grassland.
Silas squinted to shield his eyes from the wind. Arcanine was definitely one of his favorite Pokémon—not just for its strength, its handsome appearance, or its loyal nature. There was one other critical reason.
In the Pokédex, Arcanine's description reads:
"Its magnificent bark inspires awe. Known as the Legendary Pokémon in Chinese legends. Many people are charmed by its elegant gait and graceful presence."
That was also why scholars classified Arcanine as a "Legendary Pokémon"—it carried a rich mythological legacy. There were even legends of Arcanine fighting alongside generals and helping them govern nations.
What intrigued Silas the most, though, was the implication that in this world, there may have once been a country with the same name as his home country from his previous life. Was it really a coincidence—or was it…?
He'd actually asked both Professor Oak and Professor Rowan about this, but neither were historians, and couldn't provide any concrete answers.
However, according to Professor Rowan, the name came from ancient ruins, where it was found alongside records of Arcanine-related legends.
Silas didn't know if it was all just coincidence. After all, in the Pokémon world, there were ruins that also referenced places like Italy, France, and other similar names—remnants from civilizations long gone.
He was deeply curious about all of it.
"Arf!" Arcanine barked again, braking hard with its four legs.
Silas leapt off its back.
"How was it?" Officer Jenny asked with a warm smile, petting Arcanine gently.
"Incredible. Really smooth. It's just a shame that you guys don't sell Growlithe Eggs to the public."
Silas didn't hide his admiration or longing for Arcanine. Now that Pokémon Egg trading had been legalized, he felt there was no reason to conceal it.
"hahaha~" Officer Jenny giggled, covering her mouth. "Growlithe are still extremely rare, and they're perfect for working as police dogs. In fact, some officers still don't have a Growlithe or Arcanine yet. There's no way we could offer them to the public."
Silas could only sigh in disappointment. It was true. Wild Arcanine were very rarely seen in the wild anymore. Maybe their numbers had been more substantial in the past, but in the last decade or so, sightings had become increasingly rare.
Currently, almost all known Arcanine were the loyal partners and assistants of Officer Jennys across the world.
"HQ to Officer Jenny, come in! This is the Tropical Jungle Protection Division—a critical situation has occurred. All nearby officers, return to HQ immediately!"
Just as the two were chatting, urgent chatter suddenly blared from the radio device clipped to Officer Jenny's waist. The message repeated three times.
Jenny's expression turned serious at once.
"My apologies, I have official duties to attend to. I must take my leave. Enjoy your visit, Silas—and please, do not capture any Pokémon inside the reserve."
She reminded him once more, then turned to prepare Arcanine for departure.
"Hey, how about letting me come with you?" Silas offered suddenly. As a trainer with League credentials, he felt a duty to assist. Helping Officer Jenny was only natural.
Jenny paused for a moment.
Silas clearly had decent strength. He might indeed be a valuable asset.
After a brief moment of thought, she nodded. "All right. Wait here for one minute."
She climbed back onto Arcanine and dashed toward the distant green jungle.
A few minutes later, Silas saw a jeep speeding back toward him, swerving to a stop beside him. Arcanine now sat obediently in the front passenger seat.
"Hop in," Jenny said, flipping her hair coolly.
Silas opened the door and climbed in.
Jenny quickly shifted gears, hit the gas, and the jeep shot forward like a bullet.
Silas instinctively grabbed the handlebar. Looks like every Officer Jenny is a pro behind the wheel...
The vehicle blazed across the plains, heading straight for the tropical jungle.
"Screeeeech—"
The tires left a sharp trail on the dirt as the jeep came to a halt in front of a red-and-white building.
The two humans and one Pokémon quickly headed toward the entrance.
Inside, they could vaguely see a wealthy-looking couple sobbing, surrounded by three Officer Jennys.
"Reporting in! Officer Lynn returning to base!" the Jenny who brought Silas saluted an older-looking Officer Jenny.
It was the first time Silas learned this Officer Jenny's name—Lynn.
"Good work. And this is…?" the senior Officer Jenny returned the salute and glanced at Silas.
"Hello, I'm Silas Alaric, from Viridian City. I heard there was an emergency here and came to help," Silas introduced himself, taking out his Pokédex as proof of identity.
"Thank you very much. We're short-staffed right now, so your help is appreciated," the senior Officer Jenny nodded after confirming his credentials.
"No problem at all. So… what exactly happened here?" Silas put away the Pokédex and looked toward the distraught couple.
Sigh… The senior Officer Jenny let out a heavy sigh before beginning to explain to both Officer Lynn and Silas.
The couple had been on a helicopter tour over the tropical jungle with their young son. Wanting to give his boy a better view of the scenery, the father had held him outside the window—only for tragedy to strike when the child accidentally slipped and fell.
According to their description, the place where he fell was within Kangaskhan territory—an area populated by groups of Kangaskhan.
"Waaah! My poor baby! He's only five years old!" the woman sobbed uncontrollably, while the father stood by with an expression of bitter remorse, unable to stop sighing.
"Fortunately, judging from the helicopter's altitude, the child should have survived the fall. The only concern now is how the Kangaskhan in that area will react to his presence."
Officer Jenny explained calmly.
