A Farfetch'd with psychic abilities? What was going on here? As far as Gabriel could recall, the only Pokémon capable of such human-like intelligence was that peculiar Meowth from Team Rocket, and even that took years of dedicated training. Yet, this strange Farfetch'd seemed to grasp human writing purely through its innate psychic talent.
Deeply engrossed in its novel, the Farfetch'd suddenly sensed Gabriel's gaze upon it.
Had he finally noticed my potential?
With a serious expression, Farfetch'd stared at Gabriel. If he could help, then perhaps—just perhaps—this could be the turning point of its life. It had greater ambitions than just wandering aimlessly. One day, it would surpass all limits and shatter the very sky itself!
Of course, Gabriel had no idea that the Farfetch'd in front of him was indulging in such dramatic inner monologues. Still, the bird looked oddly composed—not like an ordinary Farfetch'd. However, no matter how he observed, Gabriel simply couldn't detect any psychic power coming from it. Could it be because he lacked any psychic sensitivity himself?
"Elle, are you sure this Farfetch'd has a psychic ability? I can't sense anything at all."
"Psychic abilities are extremely rare and can usually only be detected by those who also possess them," Elle explained. "Normal people can't sense them. I just happen to have a Psychic-type Beast (Pokémon), which is why I can tell. Although Farfetch'd's psychic presence is subtle, it's definitely there."
Gabriel nodded in understanding. So he couldn't perceive it simply because he wasn't psychic himself.
Thinking back, both in the manga and the anime, psychic abilities were always portrayed as rare and powerful. Sabrina, the Gym Leader of Saffron City, could even enhance her Pokémon with her own psychic energy. Compared to that, his own ability to understand Pokémon speech suddenly felt a lot less impressive.
"Well, it doesn't matter. Even if I can't sense psychic energy, everything is revealed in battle. Dratini!"
Gabriel waved at his Dratini, who was currently lounging on a recliner, happily munching on a Pokéblock. The little dragon looked perfectly at ease, showing no intention of moving.
"Muu muu." (Nope. Let me enjoy my break.)
Seriously? ....
Ever since winning the championship, Dratini had become increasingly lazy, as if it had lost its drive. Fortunately, Everette had made progress in researching Dynamax energy, weakening the seal on Dratini's Dragon Rage. Even during rest, Dratini's body continued to grow stronger under the influence of Dynamax energy, so Gabriel decided to turn a blind eye to its laziness for now.
"I'll handle this instead."
Elle stepped forward, releasing his Squirtle from its Poké Ball.
"Squirtle, Squirtle!"
"Farfetch'd, can you defeat this Squirtle?"
Farfetch'd gripped its leek tightly. So this was the test! If it wanted to change its fate, it had to prove itself. No matter the opponent, its leek would cut through anything in its path.
Readying its stance, Farfetch'd prepared for battle.
"Squirtle, Water Gun!"
Squirtle opened its mouth, shooting a powerful jet of water at Farfetch'd. However, the duck swiftly dodged and began closing the distance between them.
Fast! This Farfetch'd had clearly trained itself well. No wonder it had managed to escape from that chef.
In mere moments, Farfetch'd was right in front of Squirtle, swinging its leek down in a fierce slash.
But Squirtle withdrew into its shell, reducing the impact of the attack.
"Now! Use Rapid Spin to knock it back!"
Squirtle spun rapidly inside its shell, striking Farfetch'd and sending it tumbling to the side.
"Honestly, this Farfetch'd doesn't seem all that special. And its strength is just average…"
Gabriel observed the battle carefully but couldn't see anything extraordinary about the bird.
Farfetch'd, still in the heat of battle, overheard Gabriel's words, and a wave of frustration surged within it.
Gabriel had saved it from certain doom. A life-saving favor should be repaid a hundredfold! More than that, he could help Farfetch'd grow stronger, to reach heights it had never imagined. It couldn't let this opportunity slip away!
Struggling to its feet, Farfetch'd steadied itself with its leek, eyes burning with renewed determination.
I won't fall here!
Stowing its leek at its waist, Farfetch'd focused intently on Squirtle's every movement. Its battle instincts told it that Squirtle was much stronger—its only chance was to land a decisive, critical strike.
"Interesting. Squirtle, use Skull Bash!"
Squirtle lowered its body, its smooth head gleaming as it launched forward like a bullet.
As Squirtle's head neared, Farfetch'd felt its mind go eerily calm.
Not yet…
Not yet…
Then, just as Squirtle was within arm's reach, a thin, nearly invisible thread appeared in Farfetch'd's vision.
Now!
With stunning speed, Farfetch'd swung its leek toward the exposed weak spot on Squirtle's neck.
Slash!
A critical hit! It was super effective!
Squirtle collapsed in a single strike, unconscious and unable to battle.
"W-What just happened?!"
Gabriel stared in shock. He had been certain Farfetch'd was about to lose, yet the match had turned in an instant.
"Did it use Foresight? No, that's a Fighting-type move. Then what was that just now?"
Gabriel's mind raced, then realization dawned.
Farfetch'd's psychic ability… It allowed its attacks to land critical hits more easily!
This talent was insane! It was like having an ability that ignored all enemy defenses—just like a piercing arrow that shattered armor!
If this ability belonged to a Legendary Pokémon, it would be terrifyingly overpowered. But why on earth did it manifest in a Farfetch'd of all things?
Panting heavily, Farfetch'd leaned on its leek, its eyes gleaming with determination as it looked at Gabriel.
I did it!
Gabriel regarded the duck with newfound appreciation. No matter what, this Farfetch'd had demonstrated an indomitable will. With the right training, it could grow into something truly powerful.
Taking out a Poké Ball, Gabriel held it in front of Farfetch'd.
"You have talent, but without proper training, talent alone is meaningless. Become my Pokémon —I'll make you stronger."
Farfetch'd trembled with excitement. Even now, it fought to suppress its joy, trying to maintain a calm exterior.
Finally, without any resistance, Farfetch'd allowed itself to be captured.
And with that, Gabriel had obtained his second Pokémon.
Meanwhile, Elle sighed, glancing at his defeated Squirtle.
"Looks like I'll need to step up my training too…"
