Chapter 233 - Smell Of Death

Neo doubted himself quite a bit, as he leaned against the stone ruins of what was once a village.

Kaylynn was sitting next to him as they watched a large convoy pass by them.

She was probably even more frightened than him as her hands trembled against the ancient stone that she was gripping.

Neo watched as skeletons full of life they shouldn't posses passed by them, with large giants chained by the throats as they pulled a large caravan.

"Probably a hundred troops... If not more..."

Neo muttered under his breath as he spotted the ruined tower that Luke had taken up a position at the top of.

Reinhart, Leo, and Gideon were probably the closest to the convoy, which is why Neo was hesitant to wait any longer.

He had never seen living skeletons before, and seemed so wrong to even say within his own mind.

He wasn't sure if they could just kill them where they stood, and he wasn't sure if they wouldn't kill them first at that.

That wasn't the worst though, as several soldiers of Rider's army were overseeing the convoy atop their horses gilded with entire suits of armor.

As for what such a force could be guarding within that caravan, it must have been quite a big deal.

Neo hesitated but eventually began to move forward.

He couldn't let these recourses get back to Rider or his allies.

"Stay put, and keep it ranged..."

He ordered Kaylynn to do as he said, as he turned his back on her and summoned his snake-like blade within the tall grass as he slowly crouched toward the back of the convoy.

Feeling his energy begin to surge, he lunged forward, piercing the throat of one of the standing soldiers.

All hell broke loose.

Horns sounded, filling the air with raging screams of war.

Skeletons immediately took arms and charged the back of the convoy.

The chained up giant let out a terrible roar, as something impaled it's eye.

Neo didn't have time to pay attention to that anymore, as one of the horses quickly tried to trample him.

He rolled out of the way, immediately switching to offense, as he ripped his blade into the hide of the horse.

It shrieked as it fell into the ground, crushing the soldier underneath it.

A skeleton thrusted a spear at Neo's face, as he quickly dashed out of the way.

However, it must have been quicker than he had originally thought, because blood began to trickle down his cheek.

'Shit...'

He turned swiftly as the trotting of another horse neared behind him.

The hefty axe of the soldier atop it was about to slam down onto Neo, but just before the man let his momentum destroy Neo's skull, something crashed into the side of the horse, launching it into one of the stone walls.

"You good?!"

Reinhart yelled as he drew his great sword.

Neo panted as he gave him a short nod, and reminded himself to buy the guy a drink after they cleaned this mess up.

Then underneath the several bunched up skeletons who had taken arms, the ground began to crumble underneath them.

Several skeletons folded and lost balance, as the ground shook and trembled.

Gideon was standing before them, as he held a hand out, letting his energy break the ground in front of him.

Neo raised an eyebrow and looked at Leo who had just stepped up next to the two of them.

"Was he always this powerful?"

Leo shrugged, and drew his double edged axe.

One of the skeletons had already began to move, as it neared the three of them.

But just as it reared up to attack, an arrow pierced its skull from the side.

"It isn't dead..."

Neo muttered, as he steadied his footing.

The skeleton continued forward, as several more arrows pierced its skull.

Luke was a brilliant archer and thief at that; however, it would appear that killing something that was already dead was a pointless effort.

"Damnit all..."

Neo muttered, as he charged the skeleton armed with a thrusting spear.

He ducked underneath the first attack, and slid under its swipe of the spear, as he cut through its rib bone quite easily.

But the skeleton only let out a crackle of bones and thrusted the spear at his leg moments later.

Neo lifted his leg to avoid the blade, but had lost balance.

Leo was already behind the skeleton, and struck down with the furious might of his battle axe.

He let out a roar as he spit the skeleton in half.

As Neo backed away slowly and regained his balance, the bones began to shake on the ground as they slowly moved to reunite with the others.

"They cannot die..."

Neo said, as his eyes switched to the caravan.

He bolted toward the backside of it, as the giant continued to scream and thrash in pain on the other side.

Launching himself onto the ledge of the caravan, he kicked the backside of the wall in.

The wood easily broke from his force; however, inside of the caravan...

He was met with only darkness.

An empty room, with no supplies, resources, or even more troops.

Dread filled his body.

At the far end of the dark interior of the caravan, three white lights lit up within the shadows.

"We have TO GO!"

He screamed, as a force shot toward him, clearing the distance of the large caravan in the span of seconds.

He recoiled, trying to retreat backwards, but met only the powerful force of a grotesque creature with claws ripping into his shoulders.

His back hit the cold gravel pathway as yells echoed from around him.

Above him, a beast with two heads, one of which only had a slitted mouth, and the other had three eyes resting on its grayish face.

"F-F-FOoooOOOD!"

It growled as spit flew into Neo's face, burning his skin on contact.
