Chapter 25 - What if Sasha#2

I was sitting in chemistry class and was about to pass out of boredom. I accidentally extended my senses. I jumped out of my seat. The teacher was preoccupied but some of the classmates noticed. I asked to go to the bathroom. The teacher refused so I came close and used hypnosis. He said yes immediately.

I walked out to the corridor till I reached a blindspot then I picked up speed and ran to the dormitories. I had the girls pack an emergency bag for such an occasion. I swiftly replaced their bookbags with their escape bags. Then I replaced mine too. I waited for three minutes and walked back towards class. I saw an amused Cain staring at me. I told him about the zombies and he ordered his men to have a look. He practically jumped out of his skin. He thanked me as he went to alert the headmaster. The teacher waved me in and continued his lecture. I quietly scribbled, "Zombies have made it here. We have about five minutes before they break the windows and start munching on our classmates. Your book bags have been replaced. Get ready to leave." I silently passed the note. They each read the note and finally the last one ripped and threw it into the trashcan.

They quietly slipped their bags on and counted under their breaths. We heard screams and then the windows shattered as strangers burst in. I kicked the table and ran towards the door. I got us out and we ran towards the garage. We know going on foot is a stupid idea. We got downstairs and zombies confronted us. For some reason it left me alone. I kicked it out of my way and ordered the girls to run as I defended them from these things. Sonja found a car and we all ran to get in. The door was locked and so we used a wire clothes hanger to open it. I got in the driver's seat while the others got in the passenger seats. A few classmates and teachers managed to break free and run in our direction. I hotwired the car and started the engine. They waved at us begging to be in here. Sonja told me to get going or they will pull us out and leave us for dead. I drove off and they followed us till they got tired. I reversed the car and went back for them. The girls didn't say but a few others joined us. Adriana, Cherie and Nina managed to get in. I drove off and got us as far away as possible till we ran out of gas. We made camp and I told them to be quiet since these creatures are attracted to sound and smell. I came back with fish and started cooking. My eyes reflected light in a different manner and the others were terrified. I ignored them as I walked around searching for ways to make the fish tastier. I found a few eggs and came back to make us some omelettes. The girls seemed skeptical but watched me cook.

After dinner I washed the dishes and stood guard as the others fell asleep. The next morning I told them to stay hidden till I get back. Irene asked, "Where are you going?" I whispered, "I am going to town. I am going to get some fuel so we can get out of here in one piece." Sonja asked me to come quickly. I was about to when I heard leaves rustling followed by snapping branches. I quickly packed everything and told everyone to hold hands. Irene added, "Be very quiet" I made us invisible and we watched as two girls walked and searched for food. They found nothing. One complained about how she wished to practice her shooting. The older one replied, "You will have your practice when we find the source of the delicious smell of breakfast. I will let you riddle them with bullets. Right now shut up and search." We quietly moved till we were away and I made us visible. Adriana asked me to turn myself in. Irene reminded her how I saved her life. I wasn't made to be someone's pincushion. Sonja asked me if I could make them forget so we can move on. Adriana backed away from us and so did the others. I asked them to turn around and they did. But I didn't make them forget. I made sure they couldn't rat me out. Irene expressed how it was stupid but said nothing further.

We were going along when I heard a military convoy heading in our direction. I asked everyone to hide. Everyone ran for cover and watched as soldiers brought people in rows and demanded information. One person yelled, "You can't have our children as conscripts. We sent them away so they won't suffer from PTSD." Alice's mom came and asked very politely to divulge information. No one spoke and then a hot headed soldier shot them all in the head. A few cadets came with shovels and started digging holes. Adriana had both her hands clamped around her mouth. When they left Adriana fell to the dirt and stared blankly. The others were frozen too. I gently tapped her and she started to cry. The other two hugged her as they wept too. I asked her if she needed anything. She stared at me apologetically as tears fell down. She stammered, "The cold blooded killer is my brother. The ones who dug the graves are Nina's brother Asher and Cherie's brother Walker." I sat down trying to defuse the situation, "My brother was there too. Growing up all he ever talked about was how it felt shooting people. He talked about the joy of killing. I used to say to his face that one day he will kill our mother and won't shed a tear. That day I rip out his heart. I thought I had been desensitized to his malice. To be honest I am struggling to stop myself from barfing. My chest feels heavy and I feel a sharp pain as I breath. My head is spinning. He tried to rope me in before but I was sick before I did this to myself" the three girls hugged me and they promised to keep me a secret. I lifted their hypnosis. Annie and the others hugged me too.

We made it out of the woods and walked till we reached the city. We were careful but somehow we got the attention of a cult. This guy was trying to charm us but we weren't buying. He kept following us. Promising us a home, food and clothes. He explained that he is saving young girls from the apocalypse so they can grow up to be more productive creatures. I remember mom talking about this guy. I told the girls to keep walking. Finally Irene asked me why I was saying no. I explained, "This guy is a cult leader. He is looking for young girls he can breed with. If we give birth to boys they may or may not live. But if it is a girl they are raised till they are teens and sold at auction to older men." Everyone expressed their disgust. I held hands with the girls and pretended to talk to someone who was behind him. He turned to face them and I made us invisible. He turned to see we were gone so he walked off cursing. While we quietly glided away. I found a vehicle and made sure we had enough gas. The girls stayed hidden in the van till I got us supplies. Canned goods, feminine hygiene products, sleeping bags, clothes, fuel and extra tyres in case we had a flat. I got us walkie talkies. The food was stuffed in the trunk while the tyres were tied to the roof. The others got bags of goodies too. Two got in the front with a map. The others sat in the back to keep an eye out for troublemakers. One was in charge of listening to military radio so we didn't meet them.

We made it to the home of an elderly couple and they let us stay for the night. I didn't sleep. The cult leader was waiting for us the next morning. We managed to sneak out. We drove away and he came out to stare at us. We managed to give him the slip. The entire time Irene was cursing I told her to calm down as we searched for a safe place. We drove till we reached a mountain. We ran out of fuel so we had to improvise. I found a few wheel barrows to move the items. We kept going till we found a large tree with a hollow trunk. The hole faced the small ditch and was partially one with the ditch. It would be an idle cover so the girls hide there as they fall asleep. I stayed up looking for trouble. We got up in the morning and were getting ready for breakfast. I heard a heartbeat and knew we were in for trouble. Everyone got up and started moving. We found a rocky path which meant we can't be tracked. The path led to an abandoned building. We found a CB Radio. I spent the rest of the day fixing it and finally got it operating. I was channel surfing when I heard mom's voice. It was refreshing. She and I talked for a few minutes and I told her about the cult leader and how he was chasing us like crazy. It didn't matter where we would go the psycho would show up after several hours. He is as motivated as the zombies. I asked if there was a way to get to where mom was. She said how she has taken refuge in a prison. She promised to send Shaw to come get us. I told her that he killed a few people after they hid kids so they won't be conscripted. I saw it and so did the others. If they see Shaw they will run. So mom told me to keep going. Find refuge elsewhere. She will find a way to get us.

I came out and told everyone that I contacted mom. I showed them how to use the radio and walked out to cook dinner. The others went to use the radio and came back with grateful looks. They agreed with me. Had they seen their siblings they would bolt because right now they can't even recall the life they led before they witnessed them becoming such monsters. I expressed my anger at Alice's mom. She was complicit to a fault. The expressionless across her face as those poor souls were killed was enough to question if humanity even exists. I finished cooking and told the girls to stay here while I searched for a transport to get us to the prison. Our relatives will defend us from the soldiers so we will remain civilians. The girls wanted to keep going as far away as possible. Some of their relatives mentioned contrasting rumors about zombie experiments conducted in the basement. I wanted my mom by my side. The others expressed their desire to be close to their family members too but they were worried that they might get infected. I told the girls to stay inside the cave until I came back with a new vehicle. I ran till I found a few terrain vehicles. After speeding all over and collecting fuel I got them running. I came back and the girls started loading the goods. Irene, Sonja, Nina and Cherie boarded the purple streaked one. I boarded the orange one with Annie, Adriana and Daisy. We used the walkie talkie to communicate back and forth.

We reached an abandoned motel and called it a day. I stood guard while the others ate. Nina wanted to know if I was going to get some sleep. Sonja explained how I no longer require sleep. I quietly moved the vehicles to the garage and waited. I heard a sound. Blade swishing as they sliced through the air. It was heading in our direction. I told the girls to hide as I made myself invisible. The others didn't argue they hid in closets and under the beds. The drone came and searched the place before vanishing. I told the girls to stay hidden while I found out where the drone was going. The girls nod their heads in silence as I quietly followed it to an opening. The cult leader was operating the thing in the hopes to find me. He was disappointed he tracked the tyre tracks to a dead end. His followers were tired, hungry and they were complaining. They were fantasizing about how they were going to manhandle us. I was so disgusted by their words. I couldn't stand listening to their perverted ideas. I quietly flew back and explained how he has been tracking us. The girls expressed their disgust. We all ate dinner and they decided to get out here and move elsewhere before they showed up. The girls searched for anything useful. We hopped on board and drove towards the east. We ran out of fuel by the train tracks.

Irene mentioned how he father used to drive trains. So she fired it up as we loaded the goods. We called mom and she explained how she and the others left the prison by helicopter after the basement exploded. New varieties of their chomping nightmares were on the loose. We gave them our location and they promised to meet us at the next stop. We arrived at our destination and mom was waiting for us. Nina and the others met with their relatives. We all boarded the train after we raided the helicopter of anything useful. We went through a vacant town with a few zombies roaming around. I disembarked and walked to get anything useful. The adults wanted to come but the girls told them to let me handle it. I took a walkie talkie as Irene took one as well along with a pair of binoculars. She sat on the highest view point to tell me what was safe and what was not. The adults watched as I waded through a zombie hoard with no injuries. Mom demanded an answer. I explained how my blood disorder creates a protective barrier. We don't eat tainted meat. They may have lost their humanity but the part of them which humans still prefer to eat healthy. Mom was interrogated about my health and I heard Batou vouching for mom. Mom asked me how I restored my health. "Gene therapy" I injected myself and it reversed my condition but it now defends me instead of hurting me. When I came back the elderly woman was going to ask me to bed something silver till she saw my bracelet. One of the adults was a jeweler. He examined it to confirm it was real silver. I did walk out at noon when the sun was at its hottest and highest so no one asked me to stay in daylight.

As we took off the unmistakable stench of fecal matter and rotten corpses were thick in the air. Everyone covered their mouths and shut the windows. I got in the front as Irene showed me the controls. I told her that I was feeling thirsty. The nonhuman half wants to be fed. Irene's mom was aware of my schedule so she gave me a blood bag to feed on. I sucked on it and threw the bag away. I watched the memories of the donor and asked Irene to take the first turn she saw. Karolina wanted answers and I explained there was a hidden laboratory where zombies were experimented on. If we go there we will be taken by force and made into a zombie. Everyone cursed as Irene switched rails. Everyone took their places on the train and promised to stay on the train. They will only leave to collect fuel or food. Other than that they will stay on board. We picked up survivors as we made it towards the government approved safe zone. We heard of people saying the safe zone was a ruse. So we redirected it towards the different direction till we reached a construction site. They were building a huge wall to protect the people. The soldiers at the front checked our documents and let us pass. We arrived at a reservation. Where Native Americans and Non-humans were coexisting in peace. Mom insisted we stay here since we will be safer as there is a military post not far from here. The radio announced the splitting of the United States into eight sections. The Native lands where we were. Saber is a military only city, machine city a place where the brilliant scientific minds congregate, Green Dale a farming community, Texas as Texas, Vegas and nearby cities as Sin city, the scraps where the unwanted are thrown and then salt flats which the coastal cities.

We saw that all bodies of water were filled with fish that consumed mosquitoes. The locals explained that these creatures don't discriminate. They drink blood from zombies and humans alike. They have been assisting in the zombie apocalypse by transferring the virus from zombie to people. So they are trying to get rid of the mosquito population. We were given land to farm in exchange for first aid kits and a few canned goods. Mom and I got a house with Adriana, her mom and her sister. Irene and Sonja got the house next door with her family. The others got theirs down the road. We started planting potatoes as they are easier to grow. The days went by slowly. Every survivor that showed up was hope renewed. There were celebrations after the wall was constructed. After which everyone took their place in society. There was no superior and no inferior. Everyone was equal and everyone did their part or they were escorted to the other side of the wall. After some time the cult arrived with their friends and everyone demanded their eviction since some of them used to be cops and they had a history with these people. As they left the leader scanned every single one of us before he walked away. He looked back and saw me amongst the crowd before a man jabbed him with the butt of his rifle. The man was taken to the other side of the wall and told never to return. I shook my head, "This guy is obsessed. He isn't going to stop until he gets us." Mom promised to protect us as we walked back home after the communal dinner. This was enforced to a head count. To familiarise with society members so they can identify the perp if anyone of us break curfew.
