Chapter 28 - What if day of the apocalypse #1

Someone pulled the fire alarm and we were all outside as a form of punishment till the authorities figured out who would be the culprit. We spent the morning hosed and baked. The seniors had complained to their parents and the governor was yelling at the soldiers for their callous behavior. I saw Shaw and mom but I didn't get a chance to say hello. So when we were cleared I walked upstairs and gave her a call. Mom is a cop so she usually keeps her phone on silent and on vibrate. We had almost reached the dormitories when mom answered. She explained the zombie hoard has reached the city and now they are heading in my direction. I told the girls to grab their zombie gear because it is time to take the exit stage left. The girls sprinted to get their go bags. I told mom to go to an elevated position like the roof. Mom told me to be safe. I grinned, "Mom I was sick my whole life so these things aren't interested in eating me. According to the expert who sold zombie gear. They only feed on the healthy. To them I am a brick wall." I grabbed my gear as mom told me not to get cocky and test my theory. What if I was wrong. This isn't a video game. If I am bitten then I am done for. So be careful. I promised to call her once we were outside of the school. Mom prayed for my safety and we hung up. I grabbed everyone's hand and slowly started walking. I made us invisible before we reached the door. We slowly walked downstairs and avoided collision. We managed to get to the garage and found an SUV. I had reached the door when the screams erupted. I pulled out a clothes hanger to unlock the door. I unlocked the others so everyone else can get in.

We drove off and I saw these things rip the student body apart. I drove as fat as possible towards the city. Thankfully the zombies got out of my way. I managed to reach a gas station. There was only one zombie. I walked out and filled the tank and walked inside to get us some snacks and clothes. I grabbed water bottles, canned goods, feminine hygiene and other essentials. My next stop was an electronic store. The girls thought it was ridiculous but I got us a walkie talkie anyway. The girls called their families. They said they are going towards the only stronghold left. The iron gate maximum security prison. I was seeing stars as I felt a burning sensation in my stomach. I wasn't sure if my lunch disagreed with me or if there was horror waiting to happen. I rubbed my belly as I drove to catch up with everyone's family. Annie arrived to save her mom from her own father who had turned into a zombie. I zipped out and rescued them both. They had a tearful reunion in the car. Next was Daisy's parents. Regretfully we were too late. They were bitten so they took their own lives. Daisy was devastated. I took her with me and promised we would be a family for life. She sat with me in the car as Annie's mom drove the car. She was lifeless. The sight was more terrifying than the monsters outside. Daisy had such a positive attitude. She is always the silver lining in the clouds.

We then reached the outskirts of the city and I slipped out to get gas. The windows are tinted so no one can see. I told everyone to be quiet or they will attack. So everyone practically held their breath as I slipped out and filled her up. There was a zombie nearby that was chopped in half. It didn't bother me at all. In fact I didn't exist. I went into the store and got us some meds and a few candy bars. Annie's mom was speechless. As I casually walked past a zombie without the fear of injury. So when we were on the road she started asking questions. Annie answered all of them and I just nod my head absentmindedly. I caressed Daisy as she remained frozen as though she was reliving the moment over and over again. The car jostled and she became aware of her surroundings and she dissolved into tears. Annie and I hugged her and held on as emotional support. We reached the city center where Irene and Sonja's family were hiding. Their mothers got out along with one of their cousins. Since we reached the maximum seating capacity we were sitting on their laps. I drove the car to where mom was. She wasn't alone. Her boss and three others were there. They got in and we drove out towards the silo. I kept telling mom we needed to get as far away from the city as possible. The silo is possible where they will be doing all sorts of heinous experiments. If we got there we would likely be greeted by the next generation of zombies. What are the odds that we will make it out alive. I found an abandoned rental company and found us a car. Everyone moved the goods between the SUV and the Volkswagen beetle. I found a Ducati on the sidewalk and chose to ride it instead. The others grabbed the walkie talkies and used it to communicate back and forth.

As I was driving I heard Batou's voice so I turned around to rescue him. Mom and the others followed. I grabbed a machete from a fallen backpack and started chopping off heads. I kept going till I reached the supply closet. I banged on the door like a crazy person banging a drum, "Batou let's go. Your Uber is here." He opened the door and he had an incredulous look as he walked out. The next to come was his terrified fiance and equally semi-pertified siblings. All of them got out. Batou started his inquiry and I smacked on the back of his head. I reminded him that there is a time and a place for conversation. He agreed as he hopped in the car with mom. I drove in the front of the motorcade on my bike. As we reached the bridge that lets us get out. We bumped into a check point. The soldiers used sniffer dogs and then let us pass. We asked where the silo was and a Hispanic man in his fifties gave ya the general direction. Keep going down this road till we see a red barn then take the second left before we ride till we see a large chimney. I drove till we were away from the soldiers and googled the word chimney. I had never heard of it. I wondered what it was for. "Seriously? Are you doing a Google search right now?" I shrugged, "I won't get a signal for the rest of my life. If I am going to find this chimney thing I need to know what it looks like." I saw mom was staring at me weirdly. Her mouth was open wide enough for a queen bee to start a colony. She kept blinking slowly and breathed raggedly. Finally I got to see what a chimney looks like. It resembled a cylinder. So I used echolocation and extended my senses. I found no chimney and I sensed nothing resembling a barn. So I used Google maps. It gave the directions. I waved at Annie and she came to have a look and so did adults. After searching for a satellite view I saw the soldier gave me a bad direction. His instructions lead to a pit. There was no barn anywhere. The pit looked endless and I didn't want to go in that direction so we took a vote. It was unanimous. We are heading to the open road.

We drove till we found a gas station and the police officers killed the zombies and everyone took turns taking a bath and a change of clothes. I snuck out and got us more stuff. I was starting to feel thirsty so I snuck out to find the way back to the city. I told Sonja I will be back before she knows it. I made myself invisible and flew as fast as possible. I landed in the city square and started running all over till I found a hospital. The place wasn't empty. Soldiers were moving lab equipment and one person mentioned where the blood bags were so I got there before and grabbed a few. I made it to the top of the gas station and drank all five bags. I threw the bags away and took a moment to learn from my donors. The first one was a grifter. He was a phatelogical liar. He had some interesting places outside the city. I memorized them all. The next one was a doctor who happens to be an angel of death. I saw his victims and all I learned from was how to treat his patients. I skipped the killing part. The next was a teacher who was a predator. She had feelings for her younger students. The next one was a mechanic. He had some interesting lessons. The next was my own half brother. I saw first hand how he had killed an insurgent. The joy he felt was nauseating. I shook it off and looked up to see a drone. I knew I was busted so I snuck in and made myself invisible. I flew out and it still followed me. I guess my invisible has its limit. So I swooped down to grab a rock and it kept flying towards a re-enforced all terrain vehicle. The thing looked laughable. It resembled a turtle hiding in its shell. The soldiers mentioned their family. I remembered mine and flew back. Irene's mom was the one to wipe my lips. She told me to take a shower and I did. I came in new clothes and mom took a sigh of relief.

We ate and everyone drove the motel on the other side and double checked for zombies before we called it a day. The girls and I stayed in one room. I stood guard and Irene reminded me that we were running out of bullets. I recalled seeing a store selling weapons. I told the girls to stay hidden till I get back. I snuck out and sped towards the city. The place was about to go into lockdown. I found the store and most of the stuff was gone. I am guessing it was military property now. I grabbed bullets for my mother's Sig and Batou's 45 calibre. I grabbed a flashlight and a few flares and more water, hand sanitizer and bleach. I flew back and stored them in the cars. The girls drank water while I sterilized the room with hand sanitizer. The adults were outside chatting and mourning the loss of family and friends. Some of them got up and went to sleep. The others stood by the door and window keeping an eye out for troublemakers or zombies. Whichever may come. None came. The sun rose and we had breakfast. The drive to the open road commenced. I drove and no one argued. There wasn't enough room and I was the only one who learned to ride a bike. I cheated by using a blood bag but it was worth it. Since the others were on the edible end of the spectrum they stayed inside the safety of the cars. As we drove forward we saw zombies in their hundreds walking around scrounging for the next meal. They stepped aside to let me through. As they drove by a few seemed to have noticed mom and the others. They took a vested interest so I had no choice but to turn around and fight them. I pulled out the machete and chopped off their heads. After I was done I sat down as I felt a wave of nausea. I recalled Shaw's memory and I wondered if I was anything like him? Mom and Batou comforted me and the girls hugged me too. We were taking a moment of silence when the radio announced both the prison and the silo had a malfunction. Now new varieties of zombies were on the loose. I suddenly stood upright. I turned to face mom, "I told you. I told you. I TOLD YOU" Mom gave me a hug and started turning the dial on top of the walkie talkie. She kept going till she heard Shaw's voice. I felt a wave of nausea while Mom felt relief. If she knew what I knew he would be standing in front of the firing squad. But mothers are gentle beings whose every thought is the safety of her offspring. Even if one of them was a psychopath
