Chapter 37 - NEW JUTSU'S [ 32 ]

[ 3 days later ]

[ JINICHI WATARU ]

The morning sun peaked over the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the hidden leaf village. I woke up with my muscles still screaming from the previous day's gruelling tree walking exercises. Stretching my sore limbs, I forced myself out of bed and prepared for another brutal training session. I quickly dressed in my standard shinobi gear, eager to finally receive some actual ninjutsu training today.

The walk to the training grounds was remarkably quiet, giving me time to mentally prepare myself. The crisp morning air filled my lungs, helping to clear the lingering grogginess from my tired mind. I arrived at the designated clearing early, hoping to get a head start on the frustrating chakra control exercises. To my surprise, Kisuke was already there, sitting peacefully underneath the shade of a large oak tree. He looked completely relaxed, having already mastered the tree walking technique a day after we started learning it.

Aoi arrived shortly after me, her face sporting a scowl that indicated she hadn't slept very well. She dropped her gear bag near the edge of the clearing, stretching her arms with a loud groan. I offered her a mocking grin, already anticipating the petty arguments that would inevitably fill our morning.

She glared right back at me, silently accepting the unspoken challenge to outdo each other in training. We both turned our attention to the towering trees, determined to conquer the rough bark once and for all.

I focused my chakra, feeling the familiar hum of energy pooling steadily at the soles of my feet. Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the vertical trunk of the nearest thick, ancient pine tree. The first few steps felt solid, my feet adhering to the wood just like Shohei-sensei had demonstrated.

A false sense of confidence washed over me, causing my concentration to slip for just a microsecond. The chakra connection instantly severed, sending me plummeting backward to land flat on my back in the dirt.

Aoi burst into a fit of obnoxious laughter, pointing a finger at my prone, dusted form.

"Looks like the master of all elements can't even handle a simple piece of wood." she teased relentlessly. I grumbled under my breath, brushing the grass and dirt off my clothes as I scrambled back up.

"You're one to talk!" I shot back, crossing my arms over my chest defensively. She huffed, confidently marching up to her own tree to prove her supposed superiority in chakra control.

She placed her right foot on the trunk, channelling her energy with a look of intense concentration. She managed to take five steps up the vertical incline before her chakra output suddenly fluctuated wildly. The bark beneath her foot splintered, and she immediately slipped, sliding face-first down the rough tree trunk.

It was my turn to laugh, savouring the look of pure, unadulterated frustration on her red, embarrassed face. She dusted off her pants, muttering a string of creative curses directed entirely at my general existence.

We resumed our practice, locked in a bitter, competitive struggle against gravity and our own chaotic energy. Sometimes, I would manage to reach the lower branches, feeling a brief, fleeting moment of absolute triumph. Inevitably, my control would waver near the top, and I would plummet all the way back down.

Aoi experienced the exact same frustrating cycle, occasionally falling from the very first step she took. We traded insults with every single failure, using our mutual annoyance to fuel our stubborn, reckless determination.

Kisuke watched our pathetic attempts from his comfortable spot, opening a small packet of dried snacks. He didn't offer any advice or mockery, simply observing our struggles with a calm, analytical gaze. His silence was somehow even more infuriating than Aoi's loud, constant bickering and petty verbal jabs.

I channelled more chakra into my feet, stomping aggressively onto the bark in a fit of pure frustration. I made it exactly three feet off the ground before gravity violently reclaimed me for the tenth time.

"You are both using way too much force" a familiar, raspy voice echoed through the clearing. A cloud of grey smoke suddenly materialized in the center of the training ground, slowly dissipating into the air. Shohei-sensei stood there, a bored expression on his face. He held a large stack of wrapped scrolls tucked securely under his left arm, looking like a lazy librarian. Aoi and I immediately stopped our bickering, scrambling to our feet to stand at strict, respectful attention.

"Sensei, you're actually on time today!?" Aoi blurted out, her eyes widening in genuine, unfiltered surprise. Shohei simply grunted, taking a slow drag from his cigarette before exhaling a thick cloud of smoke.

"Don't get used to it. " he drawled lazily. He walked over to the wooden stump in the center of the clearing, dropping the heavy scrolls down. The dull thud of the parchment hitting the wood sounded like absolute music to my highly eager ears.

"Since you all managed to uncover your elemental affinities three days ago, it is time to expand your arsenals." He gestured toward the pile of scrolls, his dark eyes sweeping over the three of us carefully.

"I have selected a specific set of techniques tailored to your individual strengths and your overall team synergy."

"These jutsu's were chosen from various categories to ensure you have a balanced loadout." I felt my heart race with excitement, the prospect of learning real, destructive ninjutsu finally becoming a reality.

Shohei crossed his arms, his posture shifting slightly as he adopted a more serious, authoritative tone.

"However, simply memorizing the hand seals and spitting out chakra is not going to make you an effective shinobi."

"I need to ensure that you can actually utilize these techniques effectively in the heat of real combat."

"Therefore, every single week, I will be conducting a mandatory sparring test to evaluate your practical proficiency." He fixed us with a stern glare, making it perfectly clear that these tests would not be easy.

"You will spar against each other, utilizing everything you have learned to simulate a real, hostile environment." Aoi and I exchanged a quick, competitive glance, both of us silently vowing to completely crush the other. Kisuke merely nodded, his expression remaining perfectly stoic as he digested the upcoming, brutal training regimen.

"This is how we separate the competent ninja from the dead ones out in the actual field," Shohei added. I swallowed hard, the harsh reality of our lethal profession cutting through the initial thrill of the new skills.

Shohei unrolled a smaller master scroll, checking a list before picking up three specific, color-coded parchment rolls.

"Aoi, step forward and receive your designated techniques," he ordered, holding the three scrolls out toward her. She practically jogged forward, a massive, excited grin stretching across her face as she accepted the precious items.

"You will be starting your practical training by focusing entirely on your primary fire release affinity first." He tapped the scroll marked with a crimson.

"Once you master that, you will move on to the second scroll, which utilizes your newly discovered lightning."

"The final scroll contains an earth release technique designed for covert movement and quick, seamless escapes." He was clearly turning her into a highly mobile, incredibly lethal fighter for our squad's formation.

Aoi bowed deeply, clutching the three scrolls to her chest as if they were made of solid gold. She stepped back into line, her eyes practically shining with the destructive possibilities now at her fingertips.

"Kisuke, you are up next," Shohei called out, picking up another set of three tightly bound scrolls. The stoic boy walked forward calmly, accepting his new tools with a simple, respectful nod of his head.

"Your training will begin with your water affinity, focusing on an advanced method of camouflage and stealth."

Shohei tapped the blue-sealed scroll, hinting at an ability to blend seamlessly into aquatic environments.

"The second technique uses water to create a highly viscous, sticky field designed for trapping agile enemies." That sounded incredibly useful for controlling the battlefield and slowing down opponents who relied entirely on speed.

"The third scroll contains a specialized cloning technique that provides significant physical substance and tactical utility." Kisuke looked down at his new arsenal, clearly pleased with the defensive and controlling nature of the jutsu's.

He bowed to our Jonin instructor, returning to his spot with a quiet, undeniable aura of confidence. Finally, Shohei turned his lazy, half-lidded gaze toward me, picking up the last set of three scrolls. I stepped forward quickly, my hands trembling slightly with anticipation as I reached out to take them.

"Jinichi, considering your completely absurd talent for affinities, we are going to start with only one, your earth affinity." He handed me the scrolls, the heavy parchment feeling incredibly significant in my eager, calloused hands.

"The first technique will allow you to travel beneath the ground, perfectly bypassing enemy defences and obstacles." It was a mole-like evasion skill, perfect for setting up surprise attacks or escaping overwhelming, impossible odds.

"The second scroll contains a wide-scale environmental manipulation jutsu that turns solid ground into a sinking trap." A bottomless pit of mud sounded like an absolutely terrifying way to incapacitate a large group of enemies.

"The final technique is a purely defensive earth wall, designed to withstand massive amounts of incoming physical damage."

I looked down at the three earth scrolls, my mind already calculating the tactical combinations they offered. Combined with my Spinjutsu, I could theoretically launch myself from underground or pull enemies into the mud vortex.

"These techniques will provide you with the environmental control necessary to support your hybrid fighting style." Shohei stated, confirming my internal tactical analysis with a rare, approving nod of his head. I bowed deeply, expressing my genuine gratitude for the carefully selected ninjutsu arsenal.

"Do not get too excited just yet, brats," Shohei warned, crushing our celebratory moods instantly with a sigh.

"I am not going to let you blow yourselves up by attempting these jutsus without proper chakra control." He pointed a stern finger directly at the massive, towering pine trees surrounding our small, grassy clearing.

"Aoi, Jinichi, you are going straight back to tree walking until you can reach the highest branch without falling." My shoulders slumped instantly, the heavy weight of the tedious, frustrating exercise settling back onto my tired mind.

Aoi groaned loudly, looking at her shiny new scrolls with a look of pure longing and sorrow. We both knew better than to argue with a Jonin, especially when he held the keys to our progression. I tucked my new scrolls safely into my ninja pouch, securing the flap tightly to protect my valuable prize. Turning back to the trees, I glared at the rough bark, determined to conquer this obstacle by nightfall. The promise of unleashing massive earth techniques fuelled my stubborn resolve to finally master this basic control.

Shohei then turned his attention to Kisuke, who was already packing his gear bag.

"Since you have already mastered the trees, you are moving on to the next phase of control training." The Jonin pointed a lazy thumb over his shoulder, gesturing toward the dense woods behind the training ground.

"There is a river about half a mile east of this specific location," he instructed calmly.

"Go there and begin practicing your water walking; it's the same principle as tree walking but harder."

Kisuke nodded, hoisting his heavy bag over his shoulder without a single word of complaint or hesitation. He vanished into the tree line, his footsteps completely silent as he moved toward his new training location. Aoi and I were left behind, staring up at our wooden adversaries with renewed, burning hatred.

"Race you to the top, loser." Aoi suddenly challenged, her competitive spirit reigniting with a fierce intensity.

"You're on," I replied, channelling my chakra into my feet and taking the first, crucial step upward.

The rest of the morning dissolved into a gruelling cycle of brief ascents and painful, bruised falls. Every time I slipped, the image of turning the ground into a bottomless swamp flashed in my mind.

I focused harder, refining the chaotic flow of my energy until it formed a steady, adhesive pad. Aoi was doing the same, her previous frustration replaced by a laser-focused, almost terrifying level of sheer concentration. We were no longer just bickering children; we were actual shinobi desperate to unlock our true, destructive potential.

The sun climbed higher into the sky, baking the training ground with intense, uncomfortable summer heat. Sweat poured down my face, stinging my eyes as I maintained my precarious grip on the vertical trunk. I had managed to reach the halfway point, a new personal record that felt like a massive victory.

I glanced over at Aoi, noticing that she was exactly parallel to me on her respective, towering tree. We shared a brief, exhausted grin before continuing our slow, agonizing climb toward the high, leafy canopy.

Suddenly, my chakra flickered, a tiny lapse in concentration caused by the blinding sweat in my eyes. The connection snapped, and gravity ripped me away from the comforting embrace of the rough, wooden bark.

I plummeted downward, the wind rushing past my ears as I flailed my arms in a useless panic. I hit the ground hard, a cloud of dust erupting around my thoroughly bruised, aching physical form. Aoi's mocking laughter echoed from above, followed immediately by the sound of her own body hitting the dirt.

We both lay there, staring up at the blue sky while groaning in mutual, exhausted physical agony.

"We are never going to learn these jutsu's at this miserable rate," she complained, rubbing her sore back.

"Speak for yourself, I'll be swimming through the earth by tomorrow morning." I shot back with false confidence. It was a blatant lie, but the competitive banter helped distract from the throbbing pain in my spine. I forced myself to sit up, channelling my energy once again to prepare for the next painful attempt.

Shohei watched us from a distance, completely ignoring our suffering as he continued to smoke his cigarette. He was a strict, unrelenting teacher who firmly believed in the power of highly repetitive, agonizing physical conditioning. I knew he wouldn't let us open those scrolls until our control was absolutely, undeniably flawless and instinctual. I stomped my foot onto the tree again, ignoring the stinging pain radiating through my tired, bruised muscles. The path to becoming a powerful shinobi was paved with endless failures and incredibly steep, vertical wooden surfaces.

Time flew by, as we threw ourselves at the trees repeatedly throughout the entire exhausting exercise. My chakra reserves were slowly depleting, leaving me feeling hollow and physically drained of all vital energy. Yet, with every single fall, I adjusted my output slightly, finding a better balance.

Aoi was making significant progress as well, her fiery determination pushing her past her own physical limits. She managed to reach a thick branch near the top, clinging to it like a terrified, exhausted koala.

"I did it!" she cheered, her voice echoing loudly through the quiet, peaceful expanse of the training ground. I gritted my teeth, channelling a massive burst of focus to propel myself up my own wooden obstacle. I scrambled up the bark, my feet sticking perfectly as I finally reached an equivalent, elevated high branch.

I stood upside down on the underside of the limb, looking down at Aoi with a smug grin.

"Took you long enough," I taunted, enjoying the temporary, thrilling sensation of completely defying all-natural gravity. She stuck her tongue out at me, too tired to formulate a proper, witty response to my insult. Our moment of triumph was incredibly short-lived, as the heavy exhaustion finally caught up to our depleted bodies. My chakra sputtered and died completely, sending me crashing down through the branches to the hard, unforgiving earth.

Aoi followed a second later, landing in a tangled heap of limbs right next to my prone body. We were completely covered in dirt, scratches, and fresh bruises from our numerous, violent impacts with the ground. I stared at the sky, feeling a strange sense of accomplishment despite the immense, throbbing physical pain. We had actually made real, tangible progress today, proving that we could eventually master the required chakra control. The earth techniques hidden in my pouch felt just a little bit closer to becoming a viable reality.

Shohei finally flicked his cigarette away, stretching his arms lazily as he approached our battered, exhausted forms.

"Well, you both managed to reach the top once, which is better than I honestly expected today," he noted.

"However, you need to be able to run up there effortlessly before I let you practice actual ninjutsu." He crouched down, poking my bruised ribs with a finger, causing me to wince and hiss in pain.

"Tomorrow, we repeat this until it becomes as natural as breathing, so get some actual rest tonight."

He stood back up, pausing for a moment.

"You did well today, brats, now go home and patch yourselves up before you bleed on my training ground." Aoi and I slowly dragged ourselves up, our muscles screaming in protest with every single micro-movement we made.

We grabbed our bags, the extra weight of the jutsu scrolls feeling both burdensome and incredibly, wildly empowering. The journey back to the village center was completely silent, our bodies too drained for any more banter.

I collapsed onto my bed the exact second I walked through the door of my small, quiet apartment.
