[ JINICHI WATARU ]
"Sensei!!!" I screamed, my voice cracking under the heavy dust of the cavern. Half of my cry was born of desperate hope, and the other half was pure, unadulterated surprise. He had actually found us in this subterranean hellhole, tracking our squad through the collapsed earth.
'He found us... thank God...' I prayed silently, my chest heaving with every painful breath. I was completely immobilized, locked in place by the freezing grip of the chakra-suppressing seal and my own drained reserves.
Sensei's sharp, analytical eyes darted immediately to my prone, pathetic form on the cavern floor. He quickly assessed the brutalized state of my body before his gaze shifted toward Aoi and Kisuke. Both of my teammates were heavily battered, their clothes torn and their skin painted with their own crimson blood. Despite their overwhelming exhaustion and broken bones, they were far too stubborn to just give up and surrender. They limped backward toward me, forming a fragile, desperate perimeter around my paralyzed body.
"You guys..." I whispered, the crushing weight of my guilt threatening to suffocate me right there.
"Shut up!" Aoi growled, her voice completely devoid of its usual warmth or teasing edge. Her breathing was horribly laboured, each inhalation a ragged struggle against her freshly shattered ribs. But it was her eyes that truly silenced me, burning with an intensity I had never seen before. Anger, frustration, pain, and a deep, agonizing hurt were all painfully evident in her hardened gaze.
I slowly turned my heavy head to look toward Kisuke, seeking some kind of reassurance from our tactician. Instead, he looked down at me with profound hurt and undeniable disappointment swirling in his dark eyes.
They were angry at me, and I honestly could not blame them. I was the reason they were bleeding in the first place, and to make matters worse, my pathetic attempt to surrender would have rendered all their suffering completely meaningless.
I turned my face away, completely unable to bear the searing weight of their resentful gazes.
Aoi loudly clicked her tongue in irritation, forcing her focus back onto the deadly fight unfolding in front of her.
'They can hate me, they can berate me for all I care,' I thought, tears pricking the corners of my eyes.
'I just don't want them to die for me in this miserable, forgotten place. Please, anything but that.'
The cavern descended into deafening chaos as a shockwave of chakra flared from the shattered ground.
Shohei-sensei did not just charge blindly into the fray recklessly. He planted his feet firmly onto the uneven stone, rapidly weaving a complex string of hand signs.
The heavily scarred badger, which had been standing loyally by his side, suddenly dispersed into an inky shapeless shadow.
The inky shadow swirled and immediately sank straight into Sensei's elongated shadow cast by the glowing moss. The darkness on the floor expanded violently, bubbling and churning like a pool of boiling black ink.
From the depths of that unnatural shadow, a massive, terrifyingly fierce black tiger roared as it leaped into the physical world. Sensei called the majestic beast, Kouga, and it landed with earth-shattering force between us and the enemy, immediately rising to stand firmly on its two hind legs like a towering human.
Its pitch-black fur and white stripes bristled with visible, crackling chakra, contrasting sharply with the jagged plates of emerald-jade crystalline armour that protected its massive chest and limbs. Sensei pointed a single, bloodied trench knife directly at the strange, Oni-masked figure standing in the back. Kouga understood the silent command instantly, launching its massive frame forward to keep the demonic stranger completely busy.
The Oni simply laughed, as if goading the beast.
With the most dangerous threat temporarily occupied, Sensei launched himself directly at the three masked assassins. He moved with blinding, imperceptible speed, his trench knives leaving deadly arcs of silver in the stagnant air. He was fighting a brutal, multi-front battle.
The assailants quickly recognized Sensei as the absolute primary obstacle standing between them and their defenseless target. They immediately shifted their battle formation, trying desperately to bypass his flawless guard and land a killing blow on me.
Sensei did not struggle against their combined assault, his movements perfectly calculated and lethally precise. Every strike he threw was aimed at a vital organ, forcing the assassins to constantly remain on the defensive. However, these three were still elite killers, and their combat skills were surprisingly relative to his own.
Their seamless teamwork and flawless synchronization made it incredibly hard for him to take them down quickly. Because Sensei was overwhelmed by their numbers in such a confined space, he simply could not cover every single angle at once.
Across the cavern, the battle between Kouga and the Oni-masked figure reached a violent, destructive crescendo. The massive tiger swung its razor-sharp claws, tearing deep fissures into the solid rock walls of the grotto.
The Oni dodged and weaved with unnatural agility, deflecting heavy blows that would have easily crushed a normal man. Finally, the Oni found an opening, delivering a devastating, chakra-infused palm strike directly to Kouga's skull. The massive tiger let out a final, deafening roar before violently dispersing into an inky shadow.
The Oni-masked figure stood victorious amidst the settling dust, but he was visibly panting from the intense exertion. He leaned heavily against a shattered stalagmite, his shoulders heaving as he recovered from the exhausting skirmish. He was certainly tired from fighting the summon, but he did not appear to be injured in the slightest.
At that exact moment, Sensei winced, visibly feeling the sudden, jarring drain of his heavy summon being forcibly dispersed. His chakra flared erratically for a fraction of a second, causing his guard to momentarily falter.
This split-second distraction was exactly what the assassins had been waiting for all along. They immediately capitalized on the opening, catching the incredibly skilled Jonin completely off guard. The three masked men suddenly disengaged from the fierce skirmish, leaping backward in unison.
They landed in a tight, calculated triangular formation around Sensei, their body language entirely shifting from offensive to ritualistic.
Simultaneously, the three masked assailants bit down hard on their thumbs, drawing fresh, crimson blood. They slammed their bloody palms directly onto the cold, unforgiving stone floor of the cavern with immense force. Complex sealing formulas rushed outward from their hands, spreading like vile, black veins across the rocky terrain.
A blinding green light ignited from the etched lines, illuminating the dark cave in sickening emerald hues. The raw energy surged upward, beginning to rapidly shape itself into an ominous, solidifying structure.
A massive, translucent dome of green chakra erupted toward the high ceiling of the cavern. The barrier seal locked into place with a deafening boom that violently shook the surrounding earth. Sensei found himself completely trapped inside the glowing emerald dome, alongside two of the masked killers.
The remaining third assassin had purposely positioned himself just outside the barrier's outer edge. The barrier effectively cut off Sensei from the rest of the battlefield, leaving him completely isolated.
Inside the humming green dome, Sensei's expression instantly darkened into a mask of pure, lethal concentration. He realized immediately that physical attacks would never be enough to shatter a barrier of this high caliber. He aggressively crossed his trench knives, parrying a synchronized double-strike from the two assassins locked inside with him.
...
Outside the glowing green barrier, the situation had deteriorated into an absolute nightmare. The third masked assassin, the one who had stayed outside the dome, slowly turned his blank faceplate toward me.
He drew his tanto from his back, his murderous intent locking onto my paralyzed form. Aoi and Kisuke instantly braced themselves, raising their trembling weapons to defend me one last time. But before the assassin could even take a single step forward, the Oni-masked figure finally moved.
Moving with a speed that defied basic human limits, the Oni vanished from his resting spot against the rocks. He reappeared directly behind the lone masked assassin, his presence completely masked until it was far too late.
The assassin tried to pivot, but the Oni ruthlessly drove a thick rod straight through his shoulder. The cloaked killer let out a muffled grunt of pain as he was violently lifted off his feet. The Oni hurled him backward, slamming his body brutally against the jagged, uneven surface of the cave wall.
With blinding precision, the Oni produced three more black rods from the dark folds of his loose robes. He drove them efficiently through the assassin's limbs, firmly pinning the man to the stone like a grotesque crucifixion.
The final rod was slammed directly into the man's solar plexus, knocking the elite killer completely unconscious. The entire brutal suppression took less than three seconds, leaving the assassin hanging limply against the cold rock. The Oni casually dusted off his hands, his glowing red eyes turning slowly toward our pathetic, broken squad.
"Now," the Oni hissed, his smooth, venomous voice echoing loudly over the humming sound of the green barrier.
"Let us properly conclude our business before your resilient sensei manages to break out of his little cage."
Aoi roared in defiance, ignoring her shattered ribs to carry her forward as she lunged with a bloodied kunai.
Kisuke moved simultaneously, desperately throwing his final explosive tag in a perfectly coordinated, pincer maneuver. It was a tactical strike born of pure desperation, but it was entirely, hopelessly useless against him.
The Oni didn't even bother to draw his sword, simply weaving through their attacks like a ghost. He delivered a swift, brutal chop to the back of Aoi's neck, instantly dropping her limp body to the floor.
Kisuke barely had time to register her fall before a heavy, armoured knee crashed directly into his sternum. All the remaining air left Kisuke's lungs in a violent rush, and a secondary strike to his temple knocked him out cold. They both collapsed into the dirt, their heroic, desperate resistance finally, brutally extinguished.
The Oni slowly stepped over their unconscious forms, his heavy footsteps crunching loudly against the loose gravel. He walked purposefully toward me, his towering shadow completely enveloping my paralyzed, pathetic body.
I lay there on the damp stone, completely defenseless, the chakra-suppressing seal still freezing my entire network. Hot, angry tears streamed down my dirty face, burning my cheeks as they mixed with my own blood. I hated myself. I hated my weakness and the absolute uselessness of my current existence.
He stopped directly over me, leaning down slowly until his terrifying horned mask was mere inches from my face.
"Such a pitiful display for someone with your unique…..talents," he mocked, reaching his gloved hand toward my collar.
As his hand drew near, an overwhelming, primal surge of pure, unadulterated rage completely hijacked my senses. I couldn't form hand signs, I couldn't mold chakra, and I couldn't even stand up on my own two feet. But I still had teeth, and I refused to let this monster take me without a fight.
With a violent, desperate thrash of my heavy head, I lunged forward and sank my teeth directly into his foot. I bit down with absolutely everything I had, tasting thick leather and dirt, trying desperately to tear through to his flesh. I ground my jaw fiercely, hot tears of utter frustration and raw anger spilling continuously from my eyes.
The Oni froze for a fraction of a second, likely stunned by the sheer, pathetic absurdity of my desperate attack. He simply stared down at me, the glowing red eyes of his mask narrowing in visible, cold irritation.
"Pathetic," he whispered, casually shaking his leg to dislodge my desperate, bloodied grip.
He reached down with blinding speed, his gloved hand wrapping tightly around my throat in an iron-like grip. He lifted me effortlessly into the air, my feet dangling uselessly above the cold, unforgiving stone floor. The grip was tight enough to restrict my airflow, but controlled enough to keep me perfectly, agonizingly conscious. I clawed weakly at his thick forearm, my fingers entirely devoid of the strength needed to break his hold.
"Look around you, boy," the Oni commanded, his voice dark and dripping with absolute, terrifying authority.
"Look at the absolute ruin you have brought upon those foolish enough to stand by your side. This is the unvarnished, brutal reality of the shinobi world. Power dictates survival, and your severe lack of it has condemned your friends to this miserable fate."
His glowing red eyes shifted slightly, glancing down at the unconscious, battered bodies of Aoi and Kisuke.
"Though, I must admit," he continued, a strange, sickening tone of genuine respect lacing his smooth voice.
"Your little companions fought with a commendable, surprisingly fierce loyalty that is rare in this hollow age. They threw away their own lives without a second thought, solely to protect a weak, undeserving burden like yourself. Their coordination and raw tenacity were truly impressive for such unrefined, inexperienced children."
He paused.
"However," he sneered, the sheer malice in his tone practically vibrating through the heavy, stagnant air.
"It is a tremendous pity that such admirable loyalty was entirely wasted on protecting a coward. I would end their miserable suffering right now, but I have a strict personal standard to uphold. I would rather not stain my pristine blade with the blood of such pathetic, insignificant insects."
