Shen Yelan's eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the moonlight that filtered through the gauze curtains. For a long time, she stared at the crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling. It caught the moonlight and scattered it across the room in tiny prisms of light.
Eventually, she slid out of bed and padded barefoot across the plush carpet to the window. Through the sheer curtains, she could see the moon hanging in the night sky.
On the glass, she could see a faint reflection of her face. But for just a split second, she could have sworn she saw another face overlaying it. She blinked and realized it was just her own face...or the face she had borne for a decade now.
Something flickered in her eyes as she looked at that face.
"I won't let you down," she whispered.

Shen Yelan was unable to sleep again after that, so instead, she decided to get some work done that she had been pushing off.
