Chapter 37 - An Unexpected Proposal

Monday, 8:45 A.M.

Steel Medical Center was alive with its usual rhythm.

Stretchers rolled through the emergency entrance.

Doctors hurried between departments.

The aroma of fresh coffee drifted through the staff lounge.

For Celina...

Everything seemed to have returned to normal.

Almost.

As she pushed her cleaning cart through the pediatric corridor, familiar voices greeted her.

"Good morning, Miss Celina!"

Daniel waved enthusiastically from the playroom.

Lily followed close behind, proudly holding a coloring book.

"You promised you'd teach me how to draw flowers today."

Celina smiled.

"I remember."

"You'll have to wait until I finish my work."

Lily nodded obediently.

"I can wait."

Watching the children laugh together, Celina felt the tension of the past few days slowly fade.

Perhaps...

Life really did move forward.

On the top floor...

Aaron sat through another executive meeting.

Charts filled the large presentation screen.

"Construction on the East Wing is progressing ahead of schedule."

"The pharmaceutical division exceeded its quarterly target."

"The Foundation has received additional donations following the Community Hope Luncheon."

Aaron listened quietly.

Then one sentence caught his attention.

"The luncheon has received overwhelmingly positive media coverage."

The presenter smiled.

"Many guests praised the Foundation's decision to honor frontline staff."

Several board members nodded in agreement.

One director added,

"The recognition of Miss Celina Bakers has inspired several new corporate donors."

Another director adjusted his glasses.

"It reminded people that compassion isn't limited to doctors and executives."

For the first time that morning...

Aaron allowed himself the faintest smile.

Not because the Foundation had received praise.

But because the woman everyone had once whispered about...

Was now being admired for the very qualities he had seen from the beginning.

Later that afternoon...

Director James walked into the pediatric ward carrying a folder.

"Miss Bakers."

Celina looked up from helping Lily with her drawing.

"Yes, sir?"

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not at all."

James smiled warmly.

"I have something I'd like to discuss with you."

Curious, Celina followed him into his office.

After they sat down, James slid the folder across the desk.

"I've been thinking about the children's activity program."

Celina looked confused.

"The children adore you."

"They listen to you."

"They smile because of you."

He folded his hands.

"I'd like to create an official Children's Comfort Program."

Celina blinked in surprise.

"A... program?"

James nodded.

"It would include storytelling, games, art sessions, and emotional support for young patients."

She looked down at the folder.

"I don't have any qualifications."

James smiled.

"You have something far more difficult to teach."

She looked up.

"Kindness."

The word settled quietly in the room.

"I'd like you to help us design it."

Celina's eyes widened.

"Me?"

"You know these children better than anyone."

"I believe you can help us create something truly meaningful."

For several seconds...

She couldn't find the words.

Finally...

She whispered,

"I'll do my best."

James smiled.

"I never expected anything less."

That evening...

Aaron arrived unexpectedly at the pediatric ward.

He found James standing outside his office.

"I've just spoken with Miss Bakers."

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

James handed him a copy of the proposal.

"We're creating a Children's Comfort Program."

Aaron read the first page in silence.

Then he reached the final section.

Program Advisor: Celina Bakers.

A thoughtful expression crossed his face.

James studied him carefully.

"I hope you don't mind."

Aaron closed the folder.

"Quite the opposite."

He looked through the office window.

Beyond the glass...

Celina sat on the floor surrounded by children, helping them fold colorful paper cranes.

The children laughed every time one of the paper birds refused to stay folded.

Aaron watched quietly.

Then he spoke.

"Approve whatever funding the program requires."

James smiled knowingly.

"I had a feeling you'd say that."

Aaron's eyes remained on Celina.

"No child should feel alone in a hospital."

His voice was calm.

"But no hospital becomes a home..."

"...without people like her."

Unaware she was being watched...

Celina placed the finished paper crane into Lily's tiny hands.

"Make a wish."

Lily closed her eyes tightly.

"I wish..."

She opened one eye and smiled mischievously.

"I can't tell you."

Celina laughed.

"If you tell me, it won't come true."

The room filled with laughter once again.

Outside the glass...

Aaron found himself smiling.

Not because of the wish.

But because...

Without realizing it...

Celina had already become the heart of the hospital.

And perhaps...

She was slowly becoming the heart of his world as well.
