Chapter 40 - An Unwelcome Visitor

Thursday, 10:15 A.M.

The pediatric ward echoed with cheerful laughter.

Paper stars hung from the ceiling.

Colorful drawings covered the walls.

Near the activity corner, Daniel carefully balanced blocks into a tower while Lily concentrated on folding a paper crane.

Celina knelt between them.

"Very good," she said with a smile. "Now fold this corner gently."

Lily frowned in concentration.

"Like this?"

"Perfect."

The little girl beamed with pride.

Nearby, several nurses paused to watch.

Emily smiled.

"I don't think anyone enjoys Thursdays more than these children."

"They've been talking about Miss Celina's craft class all week," another nurse replied.

Just then...

The elevator doors opened.

A woman stepped out, dressed in an elegant cream-colored suit, a pair of sunglasses resting lightly on her head.

Every step she took reflected quiet confidence.

Several staff members recognized her immediately.

"Miss Monroe."

"Good morning."

Evelyn Monroe. them with a polite smile before turning her attention toward the playroom.

Her eyes settled on Celina.

"So..."

She murmured.

"There you are."

Inside the activity room...

Lily suddenly looked toward the doorway.

"Miss Celina..."

"Someone is looking at you."

Celina turned.

She immediately recognized Evelyn from the Community Hope Luncheon.

She rose politely.

"Miss Monroe."

Evelyn smiled graciously.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not at all."

"I was visiting the children's ward."

Her gaze moved around the room.

"I've heard wonderful things about your program."

"Thank you."

"The children deserve it."

Eveyln nodded.

"They certainly do."

For a brief moment...

Silence settled between them.

Then Eveyln spoke again.

"I was wondering if we might have a few minutes to talk."

Celina glanced toward Emily.

"I'll stay with the children," Emily assured her.

"Go ahead."

The hospital garden was peaceful.

A gentle breeze stirred the flowers lining the stone pathways.

Eveyln stopped beside the fountain.

"It's beautiful here."

Celina smiled.

"It is."

Eveyln turned to face her.

"I'll be direct."

"I admire what you've accomplished."

Celina looked surprised.

"I haven't accomplished very much."

"I disagree."

Eveyln's smile remained pleasant.

"In only a few weeks..."

"You've become the most talked-about person in Steel Medical Center."

Celina lowered her eyes.

"I never wanted attention."

"I believe you."

Eveyln paused.

"But attention has a way of changing people's lives."

She stepped a little closer.

"Especially when that attention comes from Aaron Steel."

Celina remained silent.

Eveyln studied her expression carefully.

"I've known Aaron for many years."

"He's devoted his entire life to protecting the Steel family's reputation."

She folded her hands elegantly.

"The media can be cruel."

"So can society."

"I would hate to see someone kind like you become caught in something painful."

The words sounded considerate.

Almost caring.

Yet beneath them...

Lay an unmistakable warning.

Celina understood.

She met Eveyln's eyes calmly.

"I appreciate your concern."

Eveyln smiled.

"I'm glad."

"Because people from different worlds often discover..."

that kindness alone isn't enough."

Before Celina could answer...

A familiar voice interrupted.

"I wasn't aware this was a private meeting."

Both women turned.

Aaron approached with Ethan beside him.

His expression was composed.

But his eyes immediately found Celina.

Eveyln smiled pleasantly.

"We were simply talking."

Aaron looked at Celina.

"Everything alright?"

She nodded gently.

"Yes."

Eveyln laughed softly.

"You seem very protective of your employees."

Aaron's answer came without hesitation.

"I value everyone who works for this hospital."

For the briefest moment...

Eveyln's smile stiffened.

She understood.

Aaron had answered politely.

Yet he had also drawn a line.

Without another word, Ethan stepped forward.

"Miss Monreo, Director James is waiting for you."

"Of course."

Eveyln inclined her head toward Celina.

"It was lovely seeing you again."

She turned and walked away.

Her heels echoed softly against the stone path until she disappeared around the corner.

The garden became quiet once more.

Aaron looked at Celina.

"What did she want?"

Celina thought for a moment.

"I'm... not entirely sure."

Aaron studied her face.

"If she ever makes you uncomfortable..."

"You can tell me."

Celina smiled.

"I know."

"And thank you."

He nodded once.

Neither of them noticed...

From the second-floor balcony overlooking the garden...

Eveyln paused.

She watched the two of them standing beneath the morning sunlight.

A thoughtful smile curved her lips.

"So..."

She whispered.

"It wasn't curiosity after all."

"It has already become something much more dangerous."

She turned and disappeared into the hospital corridor.

Far below...

Aaron and Celina remained unaware.

But somewhere...

The quiet beginning of their love story...

Had just found its first true obstacle.
