Chapter 41 - An Invitation to Remember

Thursday Evening

The golden hues of sunset painted the city skyline as Steel Medical Center gradually settled into the calm of the evening shift.

Inside the pediatric ward...

Daniel was carefully coloring the wings of another paper airplane while Celina tidied the activity table.

Emily leaned against the doorway with a knowing smile.

"So..."

Celina looked up.

"You've said 'so' far too many times this week."

Emily laughed.

"I couldn't help it."

She lowered her voice dramatically.

"What did Mr. Steel want yesterday?"

Celina continued arranging the crayons.

"He wanted to thank me for helping with the children's recreation program."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"And?"

"And... we had coffee."

Emily gasped theatrically.

"Coffee?"

Celina nodded.

"It wasn't a big deal."

"It wasn't a date."

"It was just coffee."

Emily folded her arms.

"Keep telling yourself that."

Daniel looked up innocently.

"What's a date?"

The two women froze.

Emily quickly smiled.

"It's when two people spend time together."

Daniel grinned.

"Like Miss Celina and Mr. Steel?"

Celina nearly dropped the box she was holding.

"No!"

Emily burst into laughter.

Daniel blinked in confusion.

"What?"

The room filled with cheerful laughter once again.

Meanwhile...

At Steel Corporation Headquarters...

Aaron stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office.

Below him, thousands of city lights flickered to life.

A gentle knock came at the door.

"Come in."

Ethan entered carrying a black folder.

"The invitations have been confirmed, sir."

Aaron accepted the folder.

"The Harmony Foundation Gala."

One of the city's most respected annual charity events.

Unlike the previous gala...

This one focused entirely on children's healthcare, education, and community development.

Representatives from hospitals across the country would attend.

Aaron quietly closed the folder.

"When is it?"

"Saturday evening."

Aaron nodded.

"Good."

Ethan hesitated.

"Will Miss Bakers be accompanying you?"

Aaron looked toward the city lights.

After a brief silence...

"Yes."

"I've already invited her."

Ethan smiled.

"I had a feeling."

Friday Morning

Celina arrived at the hospital carrying a basket filled with freshly picked daisies.

She greeted the reception staff with her usual warm smile before making her way toward the pediatric ward.

James met her halfway.

"Good morning, Miss Bakers."

"Good morning, Director James."

"I believe Mr. Steel asked you something yesterday."

Celina smiled shyly.

"Yes..."

"He invited me to another charity gala."

James nodded approvingly.

"I hope you accepted."

"I did."

"I'm just a little nervous."

James chuckled.

"The first one changed many lives."

"This one may change even more."

His words lingered in her mind as they walked toward the elevators.

Later that afternoon...

Aaron arrived for another inspection.

As always...

The children's laughter reached him before he entered the ward.

Daniel ran over immediately.

"Mr. Steel!"

Aaron smiled.

"Good afternoon."

Daniel looked excited.

"Miss Celina says she's going somewhere fancy again."

Aaron glanced toward Celina.

She looked slightly embarrassed.

Daniel continued,

"Will there be dancing?"

Aaron looked at Celina before answering.

"I'm not sure."

Daniel folded his arms thoughtfully.

"There should be."

"Dancing makes people smile."

Everyone laughed.

Aaron found himself looking at Celina a moment longer than usual.

"So does kindness," he said quietly.

Their eyes met.

For a brief second...

Neither of them looked away.

That evening...

Across town...

Inside an elegant penthouse overlooking the city...

Sophia Bennett carefully placed the latest society magazine on her coffee table.

Its front page displayed a familiar photograph.

Aaron Steel.

Standing beside Celina.

Sophia gently traced the picture with her fingertips.

A soft smile appeared on her lips.

"You really do have her eyes..."

She whispered the words so quietly that only the silence heard them.

Her gaze drifted toward an antique wooden box resting on a nearby shelf.

After several moments...

She walked over and slowly opened it.

Inside lay dozens of old photographs tied together with a faded blue ribbon.

She reached toward them...

Then stopped.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"Not yet..."

She closed the box again.

"Not yet."

Outside...

Rain began falling gently against the windows.

Some memories...

Were still too painful to revisit.

At Steel Mansion...

In another part of the city...

A luxury sedan slowly entered the estate through the grand iron gates.

The guards immediately straightened.

"It's her..."

The car came to a graceful stop before the mansion.

An elegant older woman stepped out.

Her posture was dignified.

Her expression unreadable.

In her gloved hand...

She held the same newspaper carrying the photograph of Aaron and Celina beneath the golden lights of the charity gala.

She looked at the picture once more.

Then quietly whispered,

"It couldn't be..."

"...could it?"

Without another word...

She walked into the mansion.

Far away...

Completely unaware...

Celina stood on the balcony of her small apartment, watching the rain with a peaceful smile.

She had no idea...

That two women, connected by a secret buried decades ago...

Had begun thinking about her on the very same night.

And somewhere in the shadows of the past...

A story long forgotten...

Was slowly preparing to bloom once again.
