Zuri Vesta walked home, her black knapsack precariously slid off her shoulder. Some people sneered and spat in her directon but she didn't care.
'They are animals, unworthy of my attention.' She reached an apartment and opened the door with her key.
"Mother, I have returned." She said, her voice echoing it the background.
"Welcome home dear." Maude smiled. "Come have lunch with me."
"Alright. I'll go take a bath." She hung her bag and coat, then took off her shoes.
She went upstairs and entered her room, locking the door behind her. She ran the bath and undressed then, carefully slipped into the tub.
After bathing, she took a look at herself in the mirror. She had light brown skin, curly but straight black hair. She was diagnosed with heterochromia. Her left eye was bright green and the right one was sky blue
Her dad was African and her mother was American so, it made her African-American.
She combed her thick black curls and held them together with a plastic band while leaving the straight strands put of the band. She dressed up and returned downstairs to the dinning table. Apparently, her father had left her mom when she was only five years old. He had a reason.
"Zuri, I made your favourite dish." Maude pushed the plate towards her.
"Thank you mother." She quietly started eating. "Dad cooked traditional meals for us a lot, didn't he?"
Maude didn't answer. Zuri always felt like her mom was hiding something from her. Maude was beautiful, the most beautiful person she had ever seen and she grew to inherit that beauty.
With red full lips, rosy cheeks and hourglass figure, she was quite the looker. Most people envied her undeniable beauty and focused on making her miserable.
She grew up with hate and sadness in her soul and it clouded her eyes. Her eyes lost its sparkle and all life seemed dull.
But it wasn't always like that. She was happy at the smallest of things that she was given, although she didn't show it. Even at seventeen years old, she refused to have anything to do work the opposite gender.
"Zuri, mommy has important work to do. Would it be alright if I leave?" Maude asked.
"I insisted you stay with me yesterday." She drank her soup. "You are free to leave today."
"Thanks." She patted her head. "I should be back tomorrow. I'll go get dressed."
