Chapter 284 - Chapter 284: Alive for Now

"Dear, Shalltear is on her way to kill Muzanette," Death announced suddenly, interrupting my pleasant evening with Mitsuri.

I blinked, genuinely surprised by the news. "Why? Wasn't she supposed to stay at the Butterfly Mansion?" I asked, my tone sharper than usual.

Death's spectral presence shimmered slightly, as if shrugging. "She was. But when you unleashed your super-tier magic, Shalltear detected the massive surge of energy. She thought you'd found someone powerful to fight."

I sighed, already sensing where this was going. "So, she assumed I was in danger?"

"Exactly," Death replied with a slight chuckle. "When the fight ended and you returned to Nazarick with Mitsuri without notifying Shalltear, she jumped to conclusions. She's convinced you were kidnapped by Muzanette and is now en route to 'rescue' you by killing her."

I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling a mix of frustration and exasperation. "I told Shalltear to stay put and observe the Butterfly Mansion, not go on a personal crusade."

Death's still calm as ever, "Regardless of what you told her, you should hurry. If Shalltear kills Muzanette, it will be a significant problem for you."

He wasn't wrong. Muzanette's death would mean the extinction of all demons tied to her bloodline. While I wouldn't shed any tears over most of them, I had specific plans that required her survival.

Shinobu, for one, was still on my list of targets for conversion—or rather, someone I wanted to make fall for me. There was also Daki, who intrigued me due to her backstory.

Since I had edited the fabric of this world upon entering it, I wasn't sure how much she had changed from her canonical character, but I was eager to find out. For all these reasons, Muzanette's death was a non-negotiable issue.

Mitsuri tilted her head, her cheeks still slightly flushed from earlier. "Alex-san, is something wrong?"

I glanced at her, forcing a reassuring smile. "Nothing serious, Mitsuri. Just a minor misunderstanding that I need to handle." I stood up from the table, signaling for her to stay seated. "Wait here for a moment, alright? I'll be back soon."

She nodded, looking a little concerned. "If it's dangerous, you can count on me to help."

I chuckled softly. "I appreciate that, but it's not necessary this time. Just enjoy the rest of your dessert."

Turning away, I teleported out of the cafeteria in an instant, my destination clear.

I reappeared in Infinity Castle. The air was heavy with the stench of blood and decay—a hallmark of demon territory. I didn't need to search long. Shalltear's presence was like a beacon, her overwhelming aura unmistakable.

I found her standing in the clearing, her crimson armor gleaming under the pale moonlight. Her parasol was tilted to one side, and her blood-red eyes burned with determination.

My gaze immediately landed on Muzanette, who stood frozen on a raised platform, staring down at the chaos below.

Her usually emotionless face was pale, her lips trembling as she watched Shalltear decimate her army of demons with terrifying ease. Shalltear was a blur of crimson and silver, her halberd carving through the Upper Moons like they were paper. The demons barely had time to react before they were reduced to unrecognizable chunks of flesh.

The killing intent radiating from Shalltear was suffocating, an overwhelming force that seemed to crush the very air. Even I could feel its weight, and I wasn't the target. Muzanette, on the other hand, was utterly paralyzed by it.

I noticed a puddle of water forming at her feet and smirked. She wet herself. For someone who presented herself as the epitome of control, this was both amusing and telling. I decided to have a little fun.

"Muzanette," I called out casually, my voice cutting through the chaos like a knife.

She flinched and turned to face me, her eyes wide with fear. Despite the chaos around her, she instinctively straightened her posture, attempting to mask her terror. But her trembling hands and the puddle beneath her betrayed her.

I strode toward her leisurely, hands in my pockets, a sly smile tugging at my lips. "Enjoying the show?"

She swallowed hard, her gaze flickering between me and Shalltear, who was in the midst of decapitating another demon. "Y-you're the one behind this… aren't you?"

I stopped a few steps away from her, tilting my head slightly. "You flatter me, but no. This is all Shalltear's doing. She thought you kidnapped me and decided to 'rescue' me in the most dramatic way possible."

Muzanette's lips quivered, and she finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper, "Am I… going to die today?"

Her question hung in the air, and I chuckled softly, leaning closer until my face was mere inches from hers. "Not today, Muzanette. You'll live… for now."

Relief washed over her face, but it was short-lived as I leaned even closer, my voice dropping to a teasing whisper. "But do try to keep yourself together. You're making a mess."

Her cheeks flushed in embarrassment, but she quickly averted her gaze, pretending not to hear. I straightened, thoroughly amused, before calling out. "Shalltear!"

Shalltear paused mid-swing, her halberd dripping with the blood of her enemies. She turned to me, her crimson eyes gleaming with both excitement and confusion. "Lord Alex! Are you unharmed?"

I waved dismissively. "I'm fine. Muzanette didn't kidnap me."

Shalltear's eyes narrowed as she glanced at Muzanette, who was doing her best to maintain her composure. "But—"

"No buts," I interrupted firmly. "You've made your point. Come here."

Reluctantly, Shalltear abandoned the battlefield, her weapons vanishing into her inventory as she approached. The remaining Upper Moons hesitated, unsure whether to retreat or resume their attack, but I paid them no mind.

As Shalltear reached my side, a second figure emerged from another Gate—Lupusregina, her playful grin replaced by a look of mild confusion. "You called, Lord Alex?"

"Yes," I said, gesturing toward the swirling portal I had just opened. "We're leaving. Now."

"But Lord Alex—" Shalltear began, clearly reluctant to leave Muzanette alive.

"Now," I repeated, my tone brooking no argument.

She pouted but obeyed, stepping through the Gate with Lupusregina in tow. Before following them, I turned back to Muzanette, who still stood rooted in place.
