Chapter 4 - Chapter Four — The Hatchling

Morning sunlight slowly filtered through the rainforest canopy. Golden rays pierced drifting fog while distant dinosaur calls echoed through the endless jungle. Rainwater still dripped from enormous leaves overhead, creating a constant rhythm across the forest floor.

Inside the Core Chamber, Kael sat quietly before the floating screens surrounding him. The bodies of the adventurers remained where they had fallen. Dark blood stained the mud near the abandoned campsite while insects already gathered around the corpses. The surviving Troodon limped carefully through nearby undergrowth, still injured from the battle.

The Compsognathus scavenged nervously around the edges of the clearing while the Dimorphodon circled high above the canopy.

Everything felt calmer now.

Kael leaned back slowly. Three people had died last night. Killed by creatures under his command.

The reality of it sat heavily in his chest.

Yet every time he remembered the system warning—

Permanent Death.

—he knew the adventurers would have destroyed the core without hesitation. To them, dungeons were monsters. Threats. Resources to conquer and loot.

But for Kael…

This rainforest was alive.

And it belonged to him.

A soft blue notification suddenly appeared before him.

[FIRST DUNGEON VICTORY REWARDS AVAILABLE]

Expansion Token ×1

Random Dinosaur Egg ×1

CLAIM REWARDS?

[Y/N]

Kael exhaled slowly.

"Claim."

The Core Chamber hummed instantly. Blue particles gathered above the central platform before slowly condensing into two objects.

The first was a silver coin etched with strange prehistoric markings.

The Expansion Token.

The second object was far larger.

An egg.

Kael immediately stood.

The egg reached nearly half a meter in height. Dark green scales covered its shell while black stripes curled across the surface like claw marks. Heat pulsed faintly from inside it.

A notification appeared.

[RANDOM DINOSAUR EGG IDENTIFIED]

Species: Velociraptor

Rank: D

Status: Ready To Hatch

Kael's eyes widened.

"A D-Rank…?"

That was far beyond anything currently inside the dungeon. The Troodons were only F-Rank predators. Even injured, they had nearly wiped out an entire adventurer party.

A D-Rank creature would be vastly more dangerous.

The egg suddenly cracked.

Kael stepped closer instinctively.

Sharp claws punched through the shell before a reptilian eye appeared between widening fractures. The egg split apart and a young Velociraptor slowly emerged onto the platform.

Kael froze slightly.

The creature looked far deadlier than the Troodons despite being newly born. Dark green scales covered its body while black feathers lined its arms, neck, and tail. Long curved claws scraped softly against the stone floor beneath it.

Golden eyes locked directly onto Kael.

Then the hatchling chirped softly.

A powerful connection slammed into Kael's mind instantly. Far stronger than his bond with the other dinosaurs.

The Velociraptor slowly approached him before lowering its head slightly, almost respectfully.

Kael hesitated before carefully placing a hand against the feathers along its neck.

"You're calmer than the others," he murmured.

The hatchling tilted its head slightly.

Another screen appeared.

[D-RANK MONSTER ACQUIRED]

Species: Velociraptor

Status: Juvenile

Traits:

• Enhanced Intelligence

• Superior Agility

• High Growth Potential

• Pack Leader Instincts

Special Trait:

[Alpha Predator]

Nearby lesser predators experience increased coordination and aggression.

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"A leadership trait…"

That was dangerous.

The surviving Troodon was already intelligent enough to coordinate ambushes. If the Velociraptor enhanced nearby predators, then his dungeon had just become significantly more lethal.

The hatchling suddenly turned toward the jungle displays surrounding the chamber. Kael felt curiosity through their connection.

It wanted to explore.

Another notification appeared beside him.

[VELociraptor REQUIRES TERRITORY]

Current Floor Capacity Stable

Expansion Recommended

USE EXPANSION TOKEN?

[Y/N]

Kael stared silently at the silver token.

He could expand immediately.

A second floor.

A new biome.

More monsters.

More territory.

The temptation was strong.

But after watching the adventurers nearly kill one of his best predators, Kael understood something important.

His dungeon was still weak.

Expanding too quickly could become dangerous. The rainforest still needed stronger creatures. Better defenses. More population.

He slowly shook his head.

"Store the token."

[EXPANSION TOKEN STORED]

The Velociraptor chirped impatiently again.

Kael smirked slightly.

"You really want out there, huh?"

The hatchling stared directly at the jungle display.

"Alright," Kael said. "Let's see how the others react to you."

The Core Chamber shimmered. Moments later the Velociraptor appeared deep within the rainforest near the hidden core nest. Massive roots twisted around moss-covered stone while thick fog drifted through the undergrowth.

The hatchling froze instantly.

Its golden eyes scanned everything around it carefully.

Then the surviving Troodon emerged cautiously from nearby foliage.

The smaller predator immediately stopped moving the moment it saw the Velociraptor.

Kael felt the reaction clearly through their bond.

The Velociraptor slowly stepped closer. Even as a juvenile it was already larger than the Troodon. More dangerous too.

The hatchling circled the injured predator once before chirping softly.

The Troodon immediately lowered itself.

Kael blinked.

"It accepted the Velociraptor as dominant…"

Even the Compsognathus became nervous when it approached the area. Only the Dimorphodon seemed mostly unaffected while circling high overhead.

The Velociraptor suddenly turned toward the adventurer corpses several hundred meters away.

Hunger surged through the bond.

Kael hesitated briefly.

"Go."

The hatchling vanished instantly.

Fast.

Much faster than the Troodons.

It darted silently through the rainforest while the surviving Troodon followed behind it cautiously.

Kael watched through the Dimorphodon's aerial vision as the Velociraptor reached the abandoned campsite. The hatchling paused beside Rowan's corpse and studied the body carefully.

Then it fed.

A notification appeared immediately.

[VELociraptor HAS CONSUMED HIGH-ENERGY BIOMASS]

Growth Accelerated

Kael leaned back slowly.

The dungeon was evolving rapidly.

And now he finally had enough energy to strengthen it further.

Current Energy: 72

"Let's see what fifty energy gets me."

The Dungeon Store expanded instantly.

[DUNGEON STORE]

AVAILABLE DINOSAURS:

Compsognathus (F) — 5 Energy

Microceratus (F) — 5 Energy

Psittacosaurus (F) — 10 Energy

Dimorphodon (F) — 15 Energy

Troodon (F) — 20 Energy

Kael studied the options carefully. The Troodons were powerful hunters, but relying only on predators would become risky. He needed numbers. Scouts. Creatures capable of reproducing quickly.

A real population.

After several moments of thought, he made his decision.

"Two Microceratus."

[-10 Energy]

"Three Compsognathus."

[-15 Energy]

"One Dimorphodon."

[-15 Energy]

He paused briefly before nodding again.

"One Troodon."

[-20 Energy]

Current Energy: 12

Blue light spread across the rainforest displays instantly.

New life appeared throughout the jungle.

Two small Microceratus emerged cautiously near a riverbank deep within central territory. The herbivores immediately began grazing among thick ferns while nervously scanning their surroundings.

Elsewhere, three new Compsognathus darted through the undergrowth like tiny shadows.

A second Dimorphodon launched into the sky moments later, screeching loudly as it joined the first overhead.

Finally, a new Troodon emerged silently from dense foliage. Its golden eyes immediately focused toward the Velociraptor feeding near the camp.

Kael felt the reaction instantly.

The predators now had a leader.

The rainforest suddenly felt more alive than before. Movement spread naturally across the jungle. Small creatures wandered riverbanks while flying reptiles glided through the canopy overhead. Predators stalked silently through drifting fog.

Kael stared at the screens in amazement.

Just yesterday this place had been empty.

Now it felt like a real prehistoric world.

Another notification appeared.

[DUNGEON POPULATION INCREASED]

Passive Energy Income Updated

+20 Energy Per Day

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"That's much better."

The system rewarded life itself. More creatures meant more activity, more hunting, more growth.

The surviving Troodon eventually limped toward the Velociraptor cautiously. The hatchling looked up from feeding before chirping once.

The older predator lowered its body submissively.

Then both predators disappeared together into the rainforest.

Meanwhile the Compys scavenged freely around the campsite while the two Dimorphodons patrolled overhead like living surveillance.

The dungeon no longer felt empty.

It felt alive.

Dangerously alive.

Kael's gaze slowly shifted toward the stored Expansion Token resting within the system inventory.

He still hadn't used it.

Not yet.

But eventually he would need more territory. Stronger creatures. Higher ranks.

Because if weak F-Rank adventurers could find his dungeon this quickly…

Stronger ones would eventually come too.

And next time—

They might not die so easily.
