Chapter 3 - Chapter Three — First Blood

Fog blanketed the rainforest.

The weak campfire crackled softly beneath the rocky cliff while water dripped steadily from the canopy overhead. Every shadow beyond the firelight seemed alive.

Derren backed slowly toward the camp, clutching both daggers tightly.

Blood ran down his shoulder from the Troodon's claws.

The predators followed silently.

Golden eyes flickered between the trees before vanishing again.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hunting.

"ROWAN!" Derren shouted.

The swordsman immediately rushed forward with Mira close behind him, bow already drawn.

"There!" Mira yelled.

A feathered shape darted briefly through the undergrowth.

Her arrow shot into the darkness—

—and hit nothing.

The Troodon vanished instantly.

Rowan grabbed Derren by the arm and pulled him closer to the fire.

"You alright?"

"I've had better nights," Derren muttered through clenched teeth.

Mira kept her bow raised nervously.

"They're testing us."

"No," Derren said quietly.

His eyes scanned the jungle carefully.

"They're herding us."

Inside the Core Chamber, Kael watched silently.

The rogue had figured it out.

The Troodons weren't attacking randomly.

They were controlling the humans' movement little by little, forcing them exactly where they wanted them.

Toward exhaustion.

Toward panic.

Toward mistakes.

A blue notification appeared.

[TROODON PACK HUNTING EFFICIENCY INCREASED]

Pack Coordination Improved

Kael stared at the screen.

"They're evolving already…?"

That was terrifying.

The more the dinosaurs hunted, the stronger they became.

The system rewarded survival.

Adaptation.

Success.

Another screech echoed overhead.

The Dimorphodon circled high through the fog-shrouded canopy, tracking the humans constantly.

It wasn't powerful in combat.

But its scouting ability was invaluable.

Nothing inside the rainforest moved without Kael noticing.

Below, the adventurers huddled closer around the weak fire.

"We should retreat," Mira whispered.

Rowan immediately shook his head.

"And go where?"

"The entrance!"

"We don't even know if we can find it again in this fog."

Derren wiped blood from his shoulder.

"She's right."

Rowan looked at him in disbelief.

"You too?"

The rogue nodded grimly.

"This dungeon isn't normal."

The jungle suddenly screeched.

All three adventurers spun.

Branches shook violently nearby.

Mira raised her bow instantly.

"Something's coming!"

A dark shape burst from the ferns.

Tiny.

Fast.

The Compsognathus lunged directly into the firelight with an aggressive hiss.

Rowan reacted immediately.

His sword swung downward—

—but the Compy darted sideways impossibly fast.

The tiny carnivore sprinted between Mira's legs before vanishing back into the jungle.

"What was that thing?!" Mira shouted.

"A distraction," Derren said immediately.

Too late.

The first Troodon exploded from the darkness behind them.

Its claws slashed across Rowan's injured back.

The swordsman roared in pain and stumbled forward.

The second predator attacked instantly afterward.

Feathers blurred through the darkness as it leapt directly toward Mira.

She barely managed to throw herself backward.

The Troodon's claws tore through her leather chest armor instead of her throat.

The force knocked her hard into the mud.

"GET UP!" Rowan shouted.

The predators vanished again.

Always retreating after striking.

Never overcommitting.

Kael felt a chill run through him.

The Troodons were terrifyingly efficient.

Another notification appeared.

[FEAR ENERGY GENERATED]

+5 Energy

Current Energy: 27

Kael barely noticed it now.

His focus remained entirely on the battle unfolding below.

The adventurers were losing.

Slowly.

Inevitably.

The rainforest itself had become part of the hunt.

Mud slowed movement.

Fog ruined visibility.

Darkness concealed every attack.

The humans were exhausted while the Troodons remained patient.

Fresh.

Relentless.

Derren backed closer to the fire again.

"We move together from now on," he ordered.

"No splitting up."

Rowan nodded while gripping his sword tightly.

Mira shakily pulled herself upright and retrieved another arrow.

Then silence returned.

No movement.

No sound.

Even the jungle calls had stopped.

The three adventurers stood tightly together around the fire.

Waiting.

Sweat mixed with rainwater on their faces.

Every second stretched painfully.

Then the Dimorphodon screamed overhead.

All three looked up instinctively.

That was the moment the Troodons attacked together.

The first burst from the left.

The second from the right.

Perfect coordination.

Perfect timing.

Rowan intercepted one with his sword, finally managing to slash across its side.

The Troodon screeched in pain.

But the second predator slammed into Mira before anyone could react.

Claws ripped across her stomach.

Blood sprayed across the fire.

Mira screamed.

The Troodon immediately disengaged and vanished into the fog once more.

"MIRA!" Rowan shouted.

She collapsed beside the fire clutching her stomach desperately.

Blood seeped rapidly between her fingers.

Derren's face went pale.

"We need to move NOW!"

But Mira shook violently.

"I… can't…"

Kael stared silently.

The Troodon's attack had been precise.

Not random.

It targeted the least armored member first.

The weakest prey.

Another notification appeared.

[TROODON PACK HAS LEARNED TARGET PRIORITIZATION]

Pack Intelligence Increased

Kael swallowed uneasily.

The dungeon creatures were growing frighteningly fast.

Below, Rowan grabbed Mira under one arm.

"We're leaving."

Derren nodded immediately.

The three adventurers began moving through the fog-covered rainforest as quickly as they could.

The fire was abandoned behind them.

Darkness consumed the jungle instantly.

The Troodons followed.

Always just beyond sight.

Kael tracked everything through the Dimorphodon above.

The humans moved blindly through thick jungle terrain while panic steadily consumed them.

"They don't know where they are anymore," Kael realized.

The rainforest had swallowed them whole.

Derren suddenly stopped moving.

"Wait…"

Rowan nearly crashed into him.

"What now?!"

The rogue pointed ahead slowly.

Footprints.

Dozens of them.

Small three-toed tracks covering the muddy ground.

Rowan's expression hardened.

"There's more?"

Before anyone could answer—

The jungle erupted.

Both Troodons attacked simultaneously from opposite directions.

This time they didn't retreat.

One slammed directly into Rowan while the second leapt for Derren.

Steel flashed through the darkness.

Rowan's sword pierced into the first Troodon's shoulder.

The predator shrieked violently but continued clawing at him anyway.

Derren buried one dagger into the second Troodon's side as it tackled him into the mud.

The rainforest exploded into chaos.

Screeches echoed through the trees.

Blood splattered wet leaves.

Mira tried to raise her bow—

—but the wounded Troodon suddenly abandoned Rowan and lunged directly toward her.

The predator's jaws clamped onto her throat.

Her scream ended instantly.

Rowan froze.

"Mira…?"

The Troodon tore backward violently.

Blood sprayed across the jungle floor.

Mira collapsed motionless into the mud.

For one horrible second, everything went silent.

Then Rowan roared.

Pure rage exploded from him as he charged the Troodon wildly.

His sword hacked deep into its side repeatedly.

The predator screeched in agony.

But rage made him reckless.

The second Troodon immediately took advantage.

It burst from behind and slammed both claws into Rowan's exposed back.

The swordsman stumbled forward.

Derren shouted desperately.

"ROWAN!"

Too late.

The wounded Troodon in front lunged upward and tore into Rowan's throat.

Blood erupted across the fog.

The swordsman collapsed heavily beside Mira's corpse.

Dead.

Kael felt his chest tighten.

Two deaths.

Just like that.

The remaining Troodon slowly turned toward Derren.

The rogue stood alone now.

Breathing hard.

Bleeding heavily.

Surrounded by darkness.

Surrounded by predators.

Derren stared at the corpses of his companions silently.

Then he laughed weakly.

"…We never had a chance."

The Troodons circled him carefully.

Even wounded, they remained dangerous.

Intelligent.

Patient.

Derren tightened his grip on his daggers.

"If I'm dying…"

His eyes narrowed.

"…I'm taking one of you bastards with me."

The first Troodon lunged.

Derren sidestepped and buried a dagger deep into its neck.

The predator screeched violently and collapsed into the mud.

Dead.

A notification flashed instantly.

[TROODON HAS BEEN KILLED]

Remaining Pack Members: 1

Kael's eyes widened.

One of his dinosaurs was dead.

The surviving Troodon froze briefly at the death of its packmate.

Derren saw the hesitation.

He charged immediately.

But exhaustion finally betrayed him.

His injured leg slipped in the mud.

For one fatal second—

—he lost balance.

The remaining Troodon attacked instantly.

Its claws tore through Derren's chest.

The rogue gasped.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

The Troodon knocked him onto his back before sinking its jaws into his throat.

Then silence returned to the rainforest.

Only dripping water remained.

Inside the Core Chamber, Kael stared at the screen without speaking.

All three adventurers were dead.

One Troodon remained alive, though heavily wounded.

The Compy cautiously emerged from nearby foliage while the Dimorphodon circled overhead.

Blue notifications began flooding the screens.

Kael slowly leaned back in silence.

He should have felt relieved.

Victorious.

Instead, he felt strangely numb.

Three people had died tonight.

Killed by creatures under his command.

The surviving Troodon lifted its head slowly from Derren's corpse.

Golden eyes stared into the darkness.

Then—

Through their strange connection—

Kael felt the predator's emotions clearly.

Not bloodlust.

Not cruelty.

Only instinct.

The hunt had ended.

And deep within the endless rainforest, the dungeon had claimed its first lives.
