Chapter 16 - the invisible

There was a sudden wave—a strange force, invisible yet undeniable—that swept through Roe like a gust of wind. In an instant, something shifted. It was as if a cloak had fallen over him, and the world no longer knew he was there.

For a second, he wasn't just hidden. He was gone.

It didn't feel real.

And then he realized—he was standing right in front of Mawra.

Mawra was looking around, confused. "Roe?" he called out.

But Roe was right there, just a few feet away. Mawra stared straight through him, unseeing. He couldn't hear him, couldn't sense him. Roe had become invisible.

He didn't understand how. He hadn't moved. He hadn't done anything. And yet, he no longer existed in the eyes of others.

This wasn't an illusion. It was real.

Somehow, he had tapped into something rare—an unseen power that only a few ever discover. A hidden gift that cloaked him entirely. In this state, no one could see him, hear him, or even feel his presence. People could pass through him like he was air.

The power didn't last forever.

It came at a moment of emotional intensity—when the feelings got too strong, when the urge to disappear became more than a thought. That was the trigger. For Roe, this first time lasted only thirty minutes. Just long enough to get a glimpse of what it meant to vanish.

His first instinct was to go back—to his mother's place. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere safe. He didn't know what had happened to him or why, but he knew it was real. It wasn't something he could control. Not yet.

He had wanted this for so long—not to escape life, but to survive it. To be unseen, untouched. Free from the weight of being noticed.

Now that it had happened, he wasn't sure whether to be relieved or afraid.

But one thing was clear: he couldn't give up. Not now.

He had to survive—somehow.
