He set the bunny down gently, and it scurried back to the corner, nibbling on the carrot remains. My father turned his attention back to me, his gaze sharp. "The Grand Duke has taken an interest in you, Kira. He wishes for you to join the armed forces."
My breath caught in my throat. "Join the military? But I—"
"I know, you're still very young. But the plan is to train you up to harness your abilities properly. The Grand Duke believes that with the right guidance, you could become a powerful asset to our forces."
I felt a mixture of fear and disbelief wash over me. "But I don't want to be a soldier. I wanna be normal."
He crossed his arms. "A girl like you can never hope to be normal."
I frowned and looked down at the ground, recalling the taunts from the playground. I was a monster, a freak of nature with ice coursing through my veins.
"What if I can't control it?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "What if I hurt someone else?"
