Chapter 243: Into the Lion's Den
The bus ride to the Halton mansion was agonizingly slow.
I sat by the window, my knee bouncing, my fingers gripping the edge of the seat. Every red light felt like an eternity. Every stop made my heart pound harder.
My mind raced through possibilities. Minerva would manipulate Lilith, would twist her, would try to turn her against me. She was vulnerable, still healing, still fragile. And Minerva was a master of finding cracks and widening them.
Why didn't I see this coming? I thought, my nails digging into my palms. Why didn't I warn her?
The letter had been so clear, so poisonous. And Lilith, in her desperate need to be seen, had walked right into the trap.
"Next stop," the bus driver announced. "Halton Estate."
The bus hissed to a stop, and I stepped off onto the wide, tree-lined avenue that led to the mansion gates. The morning sun was bright, but I felt cold.
