Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 The Final Stand

And just as expected the Warden's weapon fell.

**[-390 HP]**

**[HP: 0/1300]**

[Passive Vanguard Triggered: Last Stand]

**Death Immunity: 3 seconds**

The world didn't fall quiet like I half expected it to. If anything it got louder, sharper, every noise in the amphitheater snapping into focus – Sana's healing incantation mid-cast, Tommy's shield scraping stone as he closed the last few feet, Dario already airborne off a wall-run he must have started the second my HP crossed the threshold.

Three seconds. I used them all.

[Critical hit!]

**[Critical Hit!]**

**[Hollow Warden staggered - Second Window]**

The damage window was more brutal than the first, the Warden's HP bar crumbling under focused fire the way a wall crumbles once enough of the foundation's already gone. Sana's heal came right at the moment Last Stand's immunity expired, drawing me back from zero before the game had to figure out what 'zero' actually meant for a class it claimed didn't exist.

**[HP: 1300/210]**

**[Hollow Warden HP: 3400/48000]**"IT'S ALMOST DONE!" bellowed Tommy, shield-bashing the same exposed joint for the fortieth time, each hit smaller than the last but adding up. "FINISH IT, FINISH IT-

I didn't have the HP for another bait-and-tank. I had no need for it. Alex's next arrow, Dario's follow-up dagger strike and one last downward swing of my hatchet - thrown, not swung, some part of me apparently deciding old habits belonged in epic boss fights too - landed together in a stack of damage numbers too fast for me to read individually.

**[Hollow Warden Defeated]**

The amphitheater fell silent in the exact way arenas fall silent after something big stops breathing. The Warden's body didn't turn into light like the smaller enemies did, it just stopped, gray stone settling as if it had simply run out of whatever it was that had been animating it, and then, slowly, cracked apart into nothing.

**Gauntlet Stage Cleared. Party Rank: #4 of 300.**

Reward: Access to Final Stage Registration.

Individual Reward — Warden's Fragment (Item) - Vanguard Class Bonus

I didn't celebrate immediately. None of us did, really — we just stood there, breathing hard on instinct, even when we didn't really need to breathe, looking at each other like we'd all just survived something that the game wasn't entirely sure we should have survived. We did it." Sana finally said, quiet, almost like she didn't trust the words yet."We did it." Dario repeated. Then, because apparently even near-death boss battles could not contain him, "Ken, you threw your weapon again."It worked.""IT ALWAYS WORKS, THAT'S THE THING THAT SCARES ME."

Tommy collapsed on the stone, laughing that particular exhausted laugh of one who had been genuinely frightened thirty seconds ago and was only now permitting himself to feel it. Alex was already scrolling through his own stat sheet, muttering something about weak-point damage multipliers he'd be insufferable about for weeks to come.

Some instinct told me it was more important than the celebration, so I opened the item reward instead of joining the noise.

**Warden Fragment**

** Description: A part of something that used to know. It buzzes a little in your hand.

The instant the description completed its render, the flickering behind my eyes—the same rhythm I'd felt since the canyon, since the qualifier, since the first nite Vanguard had unlocked—pulsed once, hard, and steadied into something disturbingly close to a heartbeat."Guys," I said, holding the fragment up, though only I could really see it clearly. "I don't figure this is just loot."

Dario's face changed from exhausted relief to something much more alert, much faster than I liked. "Its not just loot, what do you mean.'It's humming, I mean, and it's humming in time with something that's been going on behind my eyes for a month and I really, really don't think that's a coincidence anymore.
