Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The System Itself

Dario found it by accident, 3 days before Final Stage, and he messaged me at 2AM real world time with one line.

** "Ken. Log in now. "Just do it, don't ask why"

I did do. He was already at the fountain, and even through the avatar's flattened expressions I could tell something in him had broken open a bit.'I have been comparing texts,' he said, no greeting, straight into it. "Old chat logs of Mira, her brother's, and the four others on the list, versus System dialog. "The true voice of the System, the voice that speaks to us during quests and tutorials. What comparisons?"Phrase patterning. Little verbal tics. You don't realize you do them until someone puts your sentences up next to someone else's. Her brother had a thing about warnings. Instead of just saying warning, he'd start them off with 'careful now. I saw that exact phrase, word for word, in a System message sent to a different player two months after he disappeared.

The cold from the fountain conversation with Mira rushed straight back in, worse this time.I said, though I didn't believe it. "That could be a coincidence.I thought so too. So I looked at the other four names. Everyone has a phrasing quirk that shows up in System dialog *after* their account has been scrubbed. Not until. Afterward.Dario. What are you talking about.

He opened the comparison log, five names, five quirks, five dates all in a pattern too perfect to be coincidence."What I'm saying is I don't think the System is just a program running quest logic," he said, his voice falling as if the words themselves were dangerous to say too loud. I think it's made from them. Part of them. Every player who had fallen into a Final Stage hadn't disappeared--they'd been absorbed into whatever was running this world, and their personality patterns were still in there, still leaking through every time the System talked to us."

Sure enough, the Warden's Fragment I in my inventory throbbed, as if it had been waiting to hear its own name. That's crazy," I said, meant as a hope more than a statement.I know it's crazy. "I've got five names and a spreadsheet too."

I fitted the fragment before I could talk myself out of it. I knew not to. Dario said not to. Knew Mira said her brother described it as *listening* like that word alone should've been warning enough. And I did it anyway. Because some part of me needed to know now, three days before Final Stage, instead of learning mid-fight with no room to process it.

The world did not change. No flash of drama, no alert systemwide. Just a voice, soft, underneath the normal System tone, like a second track was playing gently underneath the first.

"be careful now."

I was frozen. Dario's face said he didn't hear it--this was mine alone, apparently, some private channel the fragment had opened just for the person wearing it."Say something else," I whispered, not knowing who I was even talking to.

"You aren't supposed to be able to hear me. If you can, put it back on. I don't have long before it notices."Who's 'it?'"

the System's voice-wearer it's not malevolent. it's hungry. it needs more of us to keep running the world at scale, and Final Stage is how it's been feeding since launch. tell Mira i'm sorry. tell her i'm still—

The voice stopped, abruptly, sharply, mid-sentence, as if someone had pulled a plug. The thing in my inventory went dark, the hum ceased altogether and the small gray and gold crest next to my name flickered once, then returned to normal.

I stood there at the fountain for a long moment, Dario watching me with a look somewhere between terrified and desperate to know what I'd just heard, the Warden's Fragment sitting cold and silent in my bag as if it had never spoken at all."Ken," he said, slowly. "What did it say?"

I looked at him, and for the first time since I'd put this headset on, I didn't quite know if telling the truth was the kindest thing to do or the cruelest. "He's in there still,' I said at last. Brother of Mira. Not dead. Not comatose like everyone assumes. "We're still in it, we're still aware, and Final Stage is not a fight we're walking into. Then what is it?I guess it's a feeding ground. And I think we just told the whole company tournament we'd be there in three days."
