Chapter 4 - Lost memories

After learning all about his situation from the Wisdom Tree, Rom was seen lying on the lawn with his arms stretched out on both sides. Just as he suspected, he landed in another world.

However, not all of the Wisdom Tree's answers were satisfying to him. Like how he got here. Even when he asked the Wisdom Tree it just repeated the answer it gave him. That he allegedly came here to get the Spiritual Sapling.

Rom has no recollection of such an event in his entire life. He didn't even know what Spiritual Sapling was. But if he was asked, he could say that it was a kind of item that could be seen in eastern fantasy novels that were often used as cultivation materials.

Nonetheless, what matters was that he found out the truth that he was in another world now. Just as he expected about the other world, the creatures that live here could use various kinds of magical powers. An example of that was the magical tree in front of him.

In addition, according to the Wisdom Tree, in addition to its kind, there were many other kinds of creatures that were inhabiting this world. Rom couldn't help but be excited.

'It's just like the fantasy novels I've read! It looks like it's going to be fun. I can use my experience here to get an idea for the story I'm going to write,' Rom excitedly whispered to himself while smiling. Even when he learned about his situation it was still what matters to him.

Even though many things bother him at these times, such as how he could return to his original world, he could worry about those things later on. More important to him now was that he could get a better source for his story assignment.

As the Wisdom Tree watched the nonchalant young man comfortably lying on the lawn, the Wisdom Tree couldn't help but sigh.

*Sigh!*

"Hey, kid, how long are you going to lie there? I answered almost all your questions. Now it's time for us to start the third match to find out who among us is the real winner," Wisdom Tree told him.

The strange voice of the magical tree rang out. Upon hearing this, Rom lifted his legs in the air and used the weight of them to raise himself from lying down.

Fwoosh~

He remembered that the Wisdom Tree insisted that they had fought before and that he had lost, but Rom did not remember such an event. When he sat down, Rom glanced around but he saw no sign that a fight occurred.

The green lawn around him was vibrant and he could also see white, yellow, and red small flowers around. They were slightly swaying because of the slight gust of the wind. There was no sign that they were touched by strong forces.

His forehead furrowed slightly. 'In that case, it is definitely not referring to such a battle,' Rom predicted.

"What kind of battle are we going to fight?" He asked calmly.

"What else? Because I am the so-called The Great Wisdom Tree we will fight again with our wisdom as before. Fufu, get ready kid because this will be your end!" The Wisdom Tree threatened him.

It seemed like his guess was right. But before that, Rom felt the pressure it was releasing and he was slightly alarmed. But he still strengthened himself. He can't just give up. "Hmn…" Rom thought a little. Suddenly there seemed to be a light bulb shining beside his face. "Aha! Do you mean question and answer?" He asked in English.

"Yes, that's it!" The Wisdom Tree answered fast.

Rom frowned.

"Uh, eh…" he stuttered. Looks like he discovered some bad news. 'It's not good. I tried to use the English word but the Wisdom Tree still understood it. It seems that eating that magical fruit has also caused downsides. In that case, I can't use my language to beat the magical tree,' Rom thought in worry.

"Is there a problem?" Wisdom Tree asked him when it noticed that he seemed to have difficulty speaking.

"Right! Don't you think that if we fight today it won't be a fair fight?" Rom said suddenly when he couldn't think of anything else.

"What do you mean, kid?"

"Uh, I mean…" his eyes were swimming left to right as he searched for words to say. "I don't know but I think I lost a big part of my memory. I can't even remember what happened before. What you're saying about our battle and how I got to this place — I can't remember all that!" Rom said as he glared at the Wisdom Tree as if it was the fault of the magical tree.

A large sweat crept up the upper side of the tree's face.

"Is that what you are worried about? Hmn… It's natural to lose a lot of your memory because of your defeat. Whoever of us is defeated has an equal punishment. Whether you lose your life or not, you will definitely lose a lot of your memory," the tree replied to him.

"What?" Rom asked and could not hide his shock at what he heard. "In that case, did you lose some of your memory as well when I beat you?" Rom asked back.

"Hmn… sorry kid but you may be disappointed to know that nothing in my memory is lost, fufufu," it laughed.

Rom's face wrinkled. "Eh? Unfair! You said if any of us lose, we will lose our memory?" Rom pointed out.

Rom saw the huge mouth of the Wisdom Tree reopened. "Ah, what happened earlier was a different matter. I know I accepted my defeat. However, I did not lose my memory because you accepted my offer of grace in return."

"Wha!?" Rom stared dumbfounded. "You mean… that fruit?!" Rom exclaimed as he asked this.

"That's right. Fufufu!" The Wisdom Tree laughed even more as if even though he won, it still fooled him. There was no denying the gap in their wisdom.

'Tsk! It doesn't look like this tree can be belittled. No wonder it calls itself the Wisdom Tree. Moreover, its 100,000 years of age is undeniable. It hurts to admit but it got me there! Tsk!'

But Rom couldn't allow himself to be oppressed. He pointed to the Wisdom Tree. "However, it is not good to see that an old tree like you will fight a child like me in an unfair fight! Give back my memo—-"

Rom didn't finish what he was going to say and suddenly covered his mouth. He also suddenly thought. 'Wait, have I really lost any memory?' He suddenly thought. He would have asked it to return his lost memories. But, honestly, he was just lying that he lost his memory. No memory was lost to him as far as he knew. He was sure of it because he still remembered the whole incident before he arrived here, as well as his name and personality.

Rom grinned inwardly as he thought that the Wisdom Tree was of a false belief that he lost his memories. Perhaps he could use it against the tree.

Rom opened his mouth once again. "Wait, where did the lost memories go? Can't that be returned? " He suddenly changed his question.

"I know you'll ask that. The lost memories will go to the winner."

Honestly, this was also the reason why Wisdom Tree was so surprised earlier. Because even though it had almost all the memories of the kid in front of him, he suddenly spoke words that were not covered by his memories that were in Wisdom Tree's possession. So the Wisdom Tree could not understand what was happening.

The Wisdom Tree didn't know what kind of mystery happened. However, with the kid's eating of the Fruit of Intelligence, he could no longer use his language against the Wisdom Tree because all his language would be comprehensible whatever he says from now on. It was both a gift and a curse at the same time.

Regardless, he wanted to beat the kid to get the rest of his memories. He would be unbeatable if that happened.

Rom's face wrinkled again. "Then—" he said but before he could finish what he was going to say, the wisdom tree suddenly smiled which caused him to hesitate in what he was going to say.

"Fufufu! Right! I have your lost memory! And I know almost your whole being, kid! " The voice of the magical tree rang out loudly.

"….."

Rom wasn't surprised because it was predictable already. If you look at the expression on his face, it seemed like he could not believe it and just stared in shock. But deep inside, he didn't know whether to laugh or not because honestly nothing was really lost in his memory.

But before he could laugh, Rom suddenly noticed something that shocked him. "Just wait…" he whispered. "Why am I dressed like this? I remember wearing tracksuits when I came out of the house. But why am I now wearing a sleeveless that looks like a brown old cloth," he said to himself.

He also looked down and noticed that he was wearing faded yellow pants. Just from the look of the garment, it could be seen that it was seemingly cheap, and above all, it was undeniable that it was old.

'What the h*ll!' He exclaimed in mind. He was shocked by the discovery. He had not paid attention to it earlier because of the sudden occurrence of arriving here.

But now… he was dumbfounded.
