Branded a cyber-criminal before puberty, he spent the rest of his adolescence banned from touchable computers and monitored by federal agencies.
Internally, Dade didn't care about rebellion or anarchy. He cared about the puzzle. The thrill of breaking impossible systems. The symphony of code. The exhilaration of outsmarting structures built by adults who underestimated him.
When adulthood hit, so did the weight of his past. The Gibson hack, the cat-and-mouse chase, the brush with extradition — all of it hardened him, sharpened him, and left him drifting in a world where his talent was both feared and exploited.
Cole first learned of Dade Murphy during Tool's Brief (Chapter 06), when intelligence flagged "Zero Cool" and "Crash Override" in connection with the Worm Ledger incident. Intrigued by the precision of their digital signatures, Cole tracked the two hackers not online — but in person.
Their first meeting took place in Zero and Acid Burn (Chapter 07), when Cole walked into their New York apartment and confronted them directly. No speeches, no theatrics — just Cole's calm certainty and razor-sharp insight. Dade expected an arrest. Instead, Cole offered respect.
