At home, in the apartment he shared with his mother, Thomas lay down on a sofa in the living room. His mother was absent. He then began to analyze the situation. He knew that Amanda would not hesitate to take action. He also knew that contacting the police would end his relationship with Amanda. He considered contacting his childhood friend Matthew for advice, who currently lives in Ottawa, but did not do it. He knew that Matthew was sick of hearing him talk about his perception of the opposite sex.
He checked his cell phone. It was getting late, it was already 9 p.m. He then decided to go back to Amanda's, so he took the next bus from the line 68.
Once at Amanda's house, Thomas contacted her by texting her with his phone. The message he sent said that he was in front of the latter's house. He knew Amanda well and soon realized that she would never respond to his message just to buy time. Amanda's house was surrounded by a metal fence made up of vertical bars. The entry's barrier was closed. Thomas checked to see if there was anyone nearby, then climbed the fence by slipping his legs through the spaces between the vertical bars. Once his feet touched the grass on the other side of the fence, he texted Amanda again. He wrote: "I just passed through the fence." He then saw that there was a picture window with wide open leaves that led to a balcony. He also noticed that near the balcony there was a huge tree. He climbed on it then reached the balcony.
On the balcony, he couldn't see clearly what was inside the room, as there was no light source inside. Yet in all the darkness, he could make out a female figure. As he leaned over to try to discern which figure exactly it was, his cell phone rang.
