Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

The Forest of Death had gone completely silent following Orochimaru's departure.

Sakura knelt over Sasuke's collapsed form, her fingers trembling as she pressed her palms against the spreading black marks crawling across his neck like living ink.

Naruto sat propped against a tree root nearby, breathing heavily. His knuckles were split, his forehead still leaking a thin line of blood, and every bone in his body ached with the deep, fatigue of having driven iron-dense strikes against a powerful foe.

But he was conscious. And already, the Asura Body Art's remarkable recovery was quietly working

'I hit him,' Naruto thought, staring at his own hands. His blue eyes were unusually still, the frantic, excitable energy that normally defined them replaced by something quieter and far more dangerous. 'I don't know who that was but he's unbelievably strong.'

He closed his fists slowly, 'But it wasn't enough. Not even close to enough.'

"There is absolutely no magical trick to becoming stronger in this universe. It is nothing but hard work." Naruto told himself.

He exhaled slowly through his nose, pushing himself upright against the tree.

"Naruto," Sakura called softly, her voice tight with barely controlled panic. "Sasuke's wound... it's spreading. His temperature is spiking. I don't know how to stop it."

"I don't know either," Naruto replied with a sigh. "Wrap him tightly, we should try to keep him still and warm. Let him rest for a while."

Sakura stared at him for a long moment, this strange, calm version of her loudest teammate, then nodded and turned back to her work.

They had the Earth Scroll and needed the Heaven Scroll. They were deep in a forest crawling with enemies while their teammate lay burning with cursed energy.

'Let's move.'

They had covered less than a kilometer when the Sound ninja found them.

Dosu Kinuta dropped from the canopy first, his bandaged arm already raised, the grotesque mechanical device along his forearm humming with a building, resonant vibration.

Zaku Abumi landed to their left, both palms pressed together as supersonic air pressure began to gather at his fingertips.

Kin Tsuchi materialized at their rear, a spread of senbon needles glinting between her fingers, thin wires trailing from each one toward a cluster of bells hidden in the undergrowth.

Three-directional encirclement which was deliberately timed while their target carried an unconscious teammate.

"Well, well," Dosu's mechanically distorted voice rasped through his bandaged face. "We were told to target the Uchiha... but finding him already unconscious is even better. Hand over both scrolls and we'll make this quick."

Sakura stepped backward instinctively, tightening her grip on Sasuke's arm.

Naruto stepped forward, there was no shouting nor any pointing fingers he simply stepped between his team and the three Sound ninja with a flat, composed expression that none had ever seen on his face before.

'If your enemies trap you, they will provoke you with words. I must assess the situation and treat their words as farts.' Naruto remembered the fighting discipline taught from Shi Yan as he took stance.

"You three should leave," Naruto said, his voice carrying an uncanny calm. "Right now."

Dosu stared at the blond Genin for exactly one second before letting out a short, dismissive laugh. "Take him down, Zaku."

Zaku grinned, thrusting both palms forward.

"Slicing Sound Waves!"

Twin invisible blades of compressed supersonic air screamed across the clearing directly toward Naruto's midsection, an attack that could shredded solid trees down to their splinters.

Naruto sidestepped with a clean lateral movement executed with the precision of someone who had seen the attack coming from the moment the palms were raised.

The twin blades of air passed through the empty space where he had been standing, carving a deep twin furrow through the earth behind him.

"...What?" Zaku breathed.

Before the exchange could escalate further, the undergrowth to the east of the clearing exploded.

Rock Lee burst through the tree line in a blaze of green spandex and absolute, burning conviction his bowl cut slightly disheveled, his massive orange weights still locked to his legs, his large dark eyes blazing with a fierce light.

He had been tracking the Sound team for twenty minutes after picking up Sakura's chakra signature.

"I will not allow you to harm my most precious people!" Lee declared, his fists raised in his signature taijutsu stance as he inserted himself directly between the Sound trio and Team 7.

Dosu's eyes swept over the newcomer with quick assessment, another Genin wearing green suit with weights on his legs and no visible weapon.

"Get rid of him too," Dosu ordered flatly.

Zaku thrust his palms forward again without hesitation, a concentrated, focused blast of supersonic air driving directly at Lee's chest.

Lee's hands blurred.

Primary Lotus — Entry Form.

His body dropped under the blast with impossible speed, one leg sweeping low as the other launched him upward, his wrapped fists driving into Zaku's guard in a devastating, compressive combination that sent the Sound ninja crashing backward into a tree trunk hard enough to crack the bark.

But there were three of them.

Dosu's arm hummed, sending a focused wave of resonant vibration directly into Lee's inner ear the moment he landed. The disorientation was immediate as Lee staggered, his equilibrium shattered, dropping to one knee as his vision spun wildly.

Kin's senbon wires snapped taut, the hidden bells erupting into a layered, hypnotic cascade of sound. The genjutsu locked onto Lee's disoriented senses instantly, pulling him down into its current like an undertow.

Lee crumpled forward, unconscious before he hit the ground.

Dosu flexed his bandaged arm with a satisfied rasp. "Pathetic. Someone with no ninjutsu or genjutsu trying to fight on three fronts—"

"Hey."

Dosu stopped.

Naruto stood in the center of the clearing. His orange jacket was gone, discarded against a tree root. He stood in his dark undershirt, his blond hair lit amber by the forest light filtering through the canopy, his blue eyes carrying a quality of absolute, burning focus and he was smiling.

"It's my turn now," Naruto said.

Kin reacted first, her fingers dancing across the bell wires as she wove her genjutsu net directly toward Naruto's senses —

"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

*POOF. POOF. POOF. POOF. POOF.*

Five identical Narutos materialized in perfect, simultaneous formation, each occupying a different position in the clearing. The genjutsu net, designed to lock onto a single sensory signature, snapped tight around, nothing.

The sound-based illusion required a clear, singular target to anchor to. Faced with six identical chakra presences radiating from six different positions, Kin's technique simply collapsed under its own confusion.

"That's—" Kin's eyes widened. "That's impossible. Shadow Clones have the same chakra as the original, I can't distinguish which one is—"

All six Narutos turned their heads and looked directly at her.

"Exactly," they said in perfect unison.

Dosu's arm hummed immediately, sending a broad resonant wave sweeping across the entire clearing, wide enough to catch multiple targets simultaneously.

Three of the clones dropped instantly, their equilibrium shattered and dispersed in clouds of smoke.

But the remaining three were already moving.

Clone One drove directly at Dosu in a straight, aggressive rush, pure forward momentum, no technique, no subtlety, just the terrifying strength of Stage 2 bone density propelling a human body across thirty meters in under two seconds.

Dosu raised his arm to intercept, and Clone One simply grabbed the mechanical arm with both hands and wrenched, the iron-dense grip strength completely jamming the device's rotation mechanism with a sound like grinding metal.

"What?!" Dosu strained, pulling back with his full strength, but the clone held with immovable solidity, locking the weapon in place.

Clone Two was already above Zaku attacking at an angle that bypassed the Sound ninja's forward field of vision entirely, Clone Two drove both feet into Zaku's upper back in a devastating aerial heel drop.

The impact carried the full force of behind it and Zaku hit the ground face-first with a concussive crack, his wind completely knocked from his lungs.

The real Naruto materialized behind Kin, she spun, senbon in hand, driving three needles directly at his throat in a clean, precise strike but Naruto's head tilted four centimeters to the left.

The needles passed through empty air as Naruto right hand came around in a single, flat open-palm strike against the side of her head sending Kin tumbling sideways across the clearing floor, her bell wires snapping loose as she lost her grip.

Few seconds had elapsed since the opening move and the Sound trio scrambled to regroup, their carefully constructed tactical advantage completely dismantled.

From a dense stand of trees roughly eighty meters to the north of the clearing, two separate groups of eyes were watching with expressions of disbelieving shock.

Shikamaru Nara stood partially concealed behind a trunk, his shadow-manipulation hands loosely at his sides, his typically bored, half-lidded eyes now fully, completely open.

'What... is this the Naruto i know?' he thought, his analytical mind furiously processing the three-second sequence he had just witnessed. 'Clone diversification to collapse the genjutsu net, grip-jamming to neutralize the sound weapon, aerial blind-spot exploitation, all executed simultaneously.'

Shikamaru slowly exhaled. 'Troublesome.'

Thirty meters to Shikamaru's left, Neji Hyuuga stood with his Byakugan fully activated, his pale eyes locked unblinking on the blond figure in the clearing below.

The Byakugan did not lie, every tenketsu point, every chakra pathway, every flow of internal energy in Naruto's body was fully visible to Neji but what he saw made absolutely no sense by any framework of shinobi physiology he had ever studied.

The chakra density inside the blond boy's skeletal structure was extraordinary.

'His bones,' Neji realized, his expression shifting from clinical to genuinely startled. 'His bones are so solid, his body itself is a weapon.'

Dosu wrenched his arm free from the dispersed clone's residual grip and made a rapid, reassessment of the situation.

'Retreat. Regroup. This target is not worth the exposure.'

"Fall back!" he barked at his team and they ran.

Naruto ran after them, a cornered enemy is a dangerous enemy while a retreating enemy who is allowed to regroup is a future ambush. If you choose to engage, engage completely.

"Shadow Clone Jutsu — Formation Spread!"

*POOF POOF POOF POOF POOF POOF POOF.*

Seven clones erupted into existence mid-sprint, immediately fanning out through the canopy in a wide, encircling arc cutting off every retreat vector the trees above while the real Naruto continued his ground pursuit.

Zaku looked back over his shoulder, saw the clones closing the routes, and pivoted sharply to the left toward a denser section of undergrowth.

He thrust both palms downward, using the supersonic air burst as a crude propulsion jump to carry himself over a dense root cluster, just then a clone dropped on him from directly above.

It had been waiting, draped against the underside of a branch for fifteen full seconds since its creation the moment Naruto had mapped the most likely escape route. It drove Zaku into the ground with both knees like a human missile, the impact erupting a small crater in the forest floor.

Zaku did not get back up.

Kin broke left toward the river, her agility was her real strength, her frame built for slick evasion. She wove through the undergrowth with practiced, efficiency, and for a moment she was pulling ahead.

Then the shadow hit her feet but it wasn't Naruto nor a clone.

She looked down in pure confusion to find a thin, dark tendril locked around her ankle, impossibly long, stretching back through the undergrowth toward Shikamaru Nara whl stood at the tree, his fingers locked in the signature pose of the Shadow Possession Jutsu.

"Caught," he said flatly.

Kin froze completely, locked in place by the shadow. Shikamaru had simply on instinctive reflex extended his shadow when he saw an enemy attempting to flee Naruto.

Naruto arrived in front of the frozen Kin, looking at Shikamaru with a brief nod of acknowledgment.

"Thanks," Naruto said simply.

Shikamaru shrugged, releasing the shadow and pocketing his hands. "Don't mention it."

Kin slumped forward the moment the shadow released her, her legs finally giving out beneath her and with that only Dosu was left.

The Sound team's leader had taken the only route none of the clones covered, a direct underground dive, channeling vibration into the soil to burrow with remarkable speed.

The Forest of Death went very quiet.

"He got away." Naruto stood in the center of the scattered and defeated Sound team, his chest rising and falling with slightly heavy breaths.

Around the clearing, from various concealed positions, multiple sets of eyes were locked onto him with expressions ranging from stunned to deeply unsettled.

'Uzumaki Naruto,' Shikamaru thought slowly. 'You are going to be extremely troublesome.'

In the trees above, Neji Hyuuga finally deactivated his Byakugan, his pale eyes returning to normal as he stared down at the scene.

Although his face was still expressionless but his hands, clasped behind his back, had tightened.

He looked at Rock Lee's injured form sitting on the ground, then back at the blond figure below.

'He fought at a level that made Lee's intervention unnecessary,' Neji observed. 'He neutralized a three-man Sound team alone without sustaining any significant injury in the process.'

'Destiny.' Neji's pale eyes narrowed slightly, he had always believed it determines the ceiling of every man. A branch family member can never surpass the main family. A dead-last cannot surpass a genius.

For the first time in a very long time, Neji Hyuuga was not entirely sure he believed that.

Back at the base of the great tree, Sakura had watched the entire engagement while keeping one hand pressed firmly against Sasuke's shoulder.

Her eyes were wide and her mouth had opened at some point during the fight and had not fully closed since.

She had known Naruto for years, as his classmate and his squadmate and had watched him fail the graduation exam three times.

She had internally ranked him at the absolute bottom of their peer group in terms of genuine combat ability, a loud, clumsy, chakra-wasteful brawler whose only real talent was his bottomless, infuriating refusal to give up.

What she had just watched was something else entirely.

'When did he...' Sakura thought, her mind stuttering on the question without finding purchase. 'When did Naruto become... that?'

Beside her, Sasuke's eyes were open.

He had regained consciousness sometime during the middle of the fight, the burning agony of the Cursed Seal still pulsing through his neck and shoulder in savage, rhythmic waves. He lay against the root, too weakened to rise, the black marks crawling and receding across his skin as his body waged its internal war against Orochimaru's invasive energy.

His dark eyes were fixed on the blond figure standing in the aftermath of the clearing, and within those eyes, behind the pain and the cursed seal's burning rage, something was shifting. Something he could not entirely suppress and could not entirely name.

It lived in the exact same dark neighborhood as the feeling Orochimaru had left behind, only it burned hotter.
