Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Naruto soon stepped back into a wall of noise, the collective murmur of a crowd still processing whatever had just concluded on the arena floor, conversations overlapping in the tiered balcony seating, the ambient buzz of accumulated tension that came from watching people fight seriously for the better part of an afternoon.

He scanned the balcony automatically, finding his teammates in the crowd, Sakura sitting with her hands clasped in her lap and her green eyes carrying the particular expression she wore when she was trying very hard to appear composed.

Naruto looked at her for a second, just as Hayate Gekkō's tired voice drifted down from the proctor's position.

"Next match — Uzumaki Naruto versus Inuzuka Kiba." A pause, and then the familiar accompanying cough. "Will both competitors please come down to the arena floor."

Naruto was already moving toward the stairs.

Kiba Inuzuka dropped from the balcony railing to the arena floor in one easy, athletic motion, landing in a low crouch with Akamaru perched on top of his head.

He was broad-shouldered for his age, his clan markings sharp against his cheeks, and he moved with the arrogance of a shinobi who had physical gifts and was completely aware of it.

He watched Naruto descend the stairs to the arena floor and cross toward the center with that unhurried walk that had apparently replaced the usual restless energy, and Kiba's eyes tracked him with a faintly puzzled quality before his expression settled back into confident amusement.

"Seriously?" Kiba said, loud enough to carry to the balcony above without quite being a shout, his grin spreading wide and sharp. "Out of everyone in this bracket, I get the dead last? I almost feel bad." He tilted his head, letting Akamaru drop from his head to his shoulder with ease. "Almost."

Naruto stopped at his position across the arena floor and looked at Kiba with provoked expression but said nothing.

Kiba waited a beat, clearly expecting the eruption of offended shouting that the old Naruto would have delivered right on schedule, the pointing and the declarations and the loud insistence on his own capability, the whole familiar performance that the rest of the rookie class had grown accustomed to as Naruto's default response to any form of provocation.

When none of it came, when Naruto simply stood there looking at him with those blue eyes that had apparently decided to stop performing and start observing, Kiba's grin flickered for just a fraction of a second before he recovered it.

"Not even going to argue?" Kiba said, scratching the back of his neck. "Come on, where's the knucklehead Naruto? Don't tell me the forest broke you already."

"It didn't," Naruto said simply.

In the balcony, Shikamaru Nara watched the exchange with both hands in his pockets.

Beside him, Chouji ate chips and watched with genuine interest.

Across the balcony, Neji stood with his arms folded and his pale eyes fixed on the arena floor below, and though his expression maintained its characteristic composed stillness there was a quality of careful attention in his gaze that he reserved for things he had already determined were worth watching seriously.

Hayate raised his hand and coughed once. "Then — begin."

Kiba moved the moment the word landed, accelerating across the arena floor with the explosive speed, Akamaru launching simultaneously from his shoulder in a flanking arc to Naruto's right, the two of them executing the coordinated pincer approach that was the basis of their entire combat style hit from two directions simultaneously, maintain constant sensory coverage through Akamaru's nose, never give the opponent a single moment where they weren't being pressured from multiple angles at once.

Naruto pushed his feet on the ground and thrusted backwards as his hands came together in a single, clean cross-sign.

"Shadow Clone Jutsu."

Four clones erupted into existence in a line between Naruto and the approaching Kiba, materializing with a series of solid, overlapping smoke bursts that filled the center of the arena floor with a brief white haze, and the moment the smoke cleared Kiba found himself running directly into four identical Narutos arranged formation, each clone dropping immediately into a low taijutsu stance.

Kiba adjusted without breaking stride, his instincts sharp enough to process the variable, angling toward the leftmost clone with Akamaru simultaneously redirecting toward the right flank.

He threw himself into the nearest clone with full force, driving a devastating straight punch into its midsection and the clone dispersed in a burst of smoke, Kiba immediately spun toward the next one with his momentum carrying him forward but ran directly into the coordinated response of the remaining three.

The three remaining clones didn't fight like copies of the same person executing the same moves simultaneously.

They fought like three different members of a team who happened to share a face, each one committing to a different role in the same moment, one applying forward pressure to occupy Kiba's guard, one circling wide to cut off his lateral movement, one holding back and watching, waiting for an opportune moment.

Every time Kiba successfully dispersed a clone, another took its place, the formation rotating with a fluidity that denied Kiba the satisfaction of attrition.

He was fighting four opponents acting as one, the moment he created a gap in the formation the gap simply filled, and the moment he thought he had isolated a target the target was replaced before he could capitalize on the opening.

And through all of it, Akamaru still couldn't find the real Naruto among the moving clones.

"His combat senses are terrifying," Shikamaru said quietly, almost to himself, his dark eyes sharp and fixed on the arena floor. "He's commanding his clones without any verbal communication. The moment a clone is destroyed, he creates another one while already having decided what to do next."

"That's not a taijutsu strategy. That's a battlefield command structure. Where did a he learn to think like that?"

Kiba felt the frustration building in his chest alongside physical exertion as the engagement dragged on without the decisive resolution.

He fell back to regroup with Akamaru, landing beside his partner and dropping into the four-legged combat stance that preceded the Fang over Fang, the rotating drill technique that was the crown jewel of Inuzuka offensive capability, fast enough to cut through most defenses, powerful enough to demolish most obstacles, the move that ended fights.

"Gatsuga!" Kiba called, and he and Akamaru became twin spinning drills of devastating kinetic force, carving across the arena floor directly toward the cluster of clones with a sound like tearing air.

The clones scattered.

Two of them dispersed on contact as the rotating drill tore through their positions, and then the third clone disappeared from its position before the impact, as Kiba's drill carried him through the empty position.

Kiba landed in a low skid, breathing harder as he looked up to find all four clones re-formed and waiting at their positions, and the real Naruto still standing at the back.

"Substitution," Kiba said flatly, understanding belatedly what had just happened, his jaw tightening. "You substituted the clone out of the Gatsuga's path."

"Academy technique," one of the clones said, which was somehow worse.

Kiba wiped the back of his hand across his mouth and made a decision.

Forget the clones, forget the formation, forget trying to find the real one, just commit to the Gatsuga at full power and tear through every single one of them simultaneously, real body included.

He fed chakra into Akamaru, watched his partner transform and grow with familiar syncing, they prepared the double Gatsuga simultaneously, two rotating drills instead of one, covering a spread wide enough to catch every position on the arena floor, no substitution technique fast enough to clear the combined trajectory of both attacks at once.

He launched.

The twin drills tore across the arena floor with devastating speed, the stone cracking and gouging in long parallel lines beneath the rotational force, covering the distance to the clone formation in under a second and hit smoke.

All four clones dispersed simultaneously in a coordinated burst, vanishing so completely and immediately that both drills passed through empty air and carried into the arena wall, Kiba and Akamaru pulling out of their rotation just before impact and landing hard, skidding across the damaged stone floor and coming up in fighting stances facing.

A single, small white dog sitting in the center of the arena floor, looking up at them with enormous, innocent eyes.

Kiba stared at it.

Akamaru stared at it.

The crowd stared at it.

The small white dog sneezed.

"That's—" Kiba started, and then something hit him from directly above, it was the concentrated force of a drop kick, the real Naruto having substituted himself, the moment the clones dispersed and launching from elevated position in a clean, vertical dive while every eye in the building was fixed on the inexplicable small white dog sitting on the arena floor below which was, of course, a transformed shadow clone wearing Akamaru's appearance.

The impact drove Kiba into the arena floor with a concussive force that cracked the stone beneath him in a starburst pattern.

Kiba hit the ground and bounced once and lay still, Akamaru landing beside him with a small, bewildered whimper and nosing at his partner's face with increasing urgency.

Kiba did not get up.

Hayate walked forward, coughed once into his fist, crouched briefly to assess the situation, and straightened up. "Inuzuka Kiba is unable to continue," he announced.

"The winner is Uzumaki Naruto."

The silence lasted one second before the crowd found its voice, the noise erupting across the hall in a wave of overlapping reactions of surprise, excitement, the particular vocal energy of people who had just watched something rewrite their expectations entirely.

In the balcony, the rookie nine processed the conclusion of the match in their various ways.

Shikamaru stood without moving for a long moment, staring down at the arena floor where Naruto was crouching beside Kiba to check on him.

"Three academy jutsu," he said quietly to no one in particular, his voice carrying a flat, genuine disbelief that he didn't bother to conceal. "He used substitution jutsu using his clones to escape Fang over Fang, he transformed a clone into akamaru, and the last batch of clones weren't shadow clones but simple clones and after Kiba was distracted he ended the bout."

Chouji offered him a chip. Shikamaru took it without looking.

Neji had not moved from his position at the railing since Naruto entered the arena floor, his Byakugan having tracked every movement of the engagement with unblinking attention, and he stood now with his arms folded.

'Destiny determines the ceiling,' Neji thought, and the thought had a different texture than it usually did.
