When Julian came back in the evening, Scarlett was in the kitchen cutting fruit.
He wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but it seemed that when she was around, the house felt more alive. Even the light seemed brighter.
He walked in and stood at the kitchen door, watching her cut the mango into pieces. He said, "I saw your mother at the hospital today."
Scarlett said, "She told me."
Julian asked, "Her friend was hospitalized, and she went to visit. Is she a relative of yours?"
"..." Scarlett said, "Just a friend of my mom's, someone she often plays mahjong with. A woman I don't really like."
The reason Scarlett didn't like that woman was because she would always ask, "Scarlett, do you think your current dad is better or your former dad?"
Scarlett found such pointless questions exasperating every time she heard them.
There's always that kind of person who loves to poke at others' sore spots without realizing it and thinks they're being funny.
