That night laying in bed I held my knees thinking about what the man said. I can't believe people think that way. I mean we are all human, or at least the others are. Why he keeps the lady as a servant, his property, as he says is beyond me. Stupid.
My eyes slowly close from the exhaustion, the overload of information, and overlapping thoughts, making me drift slowly but surely.
In the middle of the night I felt a tap on my arm. I opened my eyes and almost screamed when I saw the masked lady by the side of my bed.
"Eh hello." I said in a confused yet low tone, trying not to wake up the others next door.
The lady didn't say anything, she just held an old fashioned lantern in her hand and used her other to beacon me to follow her.
Half expecting this to all be a dream, I curiously sat up and got out of bed to follow her. Seeing that the lady and I were the only ones awake. I was wearing a borrowed night gown from the lady and slippers that felt so soft. The lady then starts to walk away stopping at the door to unlock it, then turning back at me.
I sigh and go through the door, trying not to wake the children in the doors nearby. The lady locks the door behind us then walks down the hall to the next door. She walked in a quiet yet fast pace. The hall felt even scarier at night all the faces and eyes watching.
The lady walks through the next door, again motioning for me to follow with her hand. I followed and we went to the dining hall, she then locked the door behind and walked to another room. She continued to maintain a silent but rapid strut. I followed almost struggling to keep up.
After I followed her through a few rooms we came to a door that was different from the others. It looked old and dusty, she then stops for a second and takes the key from around her neck using it to open the door. It seemed to be a skeleton key for the house.
As the lady opens the old door a thick cloud of dust formed around us, like the room hadn't been touched in years. The lady then walks inside slowly approaching a desk with a small drawer. I moved towards her after closing the door.
"What is it that you wanted to show me?" I asked in a small voice.
The lady unlocked the drawer and took out a box covered in dust. It looked to be made of wood and was covered in flowery engravings and golden petals on each of them.
The lady then turns to me and hands me the box to open. I looked at her masked face and saw her eyes through the small holes cut into the mask. After looking back up at her for reassurance, the lady nods. I then look down at the box and slowly open it to look inside...
