CHAPTER 35 — THE THINGS THEY KEPT

Destiny started counting days.

Not because anyone told her to.

Because nobody would tell her anything else.

Four days since she woke up.

Four days since the doctors had told her that she'd been unconscious for almost a month.

Four days since everyone she'd asked about the forest had suddenly developed the same expression.

That expression.

The one that said I know something you don't.

She hated it.

She hated the way people lowered their voices whenever she entered a room.

She hated the way her mother smiled too quickly when Destiny asked about the others.

She hated the way her father Mathew would sit beside her bed and talk about school, food, the weather—anything except the people she actually wanted to hear about.

Most of all, she hated that nobody seemed to find this strange.

It was as though everyone had silently agreed to protect her from something.

The problem was that Destiny had never asked to be protected.
