Chapter 30 - CHAPTER THIRTY

Kennedy remembered the hallway.

She remembered the smell first.

Old books.

Floor cleaner.

Something faintly sweet coming from the cafeteria.

She remembered the lockers too.

The blue ones.

The ones that always squeaked when they opened.

She remembered being thirteen.

Young enough to still believe that embarrassing moments lasted forever.

Young enough to think everyone was watching.

She was standing beside her locker, struggling with the combination, when someone bumped her shoulder.

"Move."

Kennedy turned.

The girl with the red bow was standing behind her.

Kennedy rolled her eyes.

"You could've said excuse me."

"I did."

"No, you didn't."

"I thought it."

Kennedy laughed.

"You can't just think it."

"Apparently I can."

The girl smiled.

Kennedy couldn't remember when they'd become friends.

She simply remembered that they were.

They'd been spending more time together lately.

Walking between classes.

Sharing snacks.

Whispering during lessons.

Nothing unusual.
