Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha
Chapter 2: The Bell Test and the Man Behind the Boy
The morning sun rose over the Hidden Leaf Village.
Obito Uchiha arrived at the training field with a nervous expression.
Or at least…
He tried to look nervous.
In reality, he already knew exactly what was about to happen.
The bell test.
A memory from another lifetime.
A simple exercise that would reveal the most important lesson a shinobi needed.
Teamwork.
Minato Namikaze stood waiting in the field, two small bells hanging from his belt.
Kakashi immediately noticed.
"Those are the bells?"
Minato smiled.
"That's right."
Rin looked confused.
"What are we supposed to do with them?"
Minato held them up.
"Your goal is simple. Take one of these bells from me."
Obito looked at the bells.
He remembered.
In his previous life, he failed this test because he focused only on proving himself.
Kakashi focused only on completing the mission.
They both missed the point.
But this time…
Obito knew better.
Minato continued.
"However…"
He pointed toward the clock.
"Anyone who fails to get a bell before noon will go without lunch."
Obito almost laughed.
The same rule.
The same words.
The same test.
But the outcome would be different.
The moment the test began, Kakashi disappeared.
Fast.
Precise.
Calculated.
Rin moved into position, preparing support techniques.
Obito remained still.
Minato watched him.
"Obito?"
Obito smiled.
"I'm thinking."
Minato raised an eyebrow.
"That's new."
Obito laughed.
"Very funny, Sensei."
He knew Minato was far beyond them.
Even with his memories and experience, defeating Minato head-on was impossible.
The Fourth Hokage wasn't called the Yellow Flash for nothing.
So Obito needed to do what he failed to do before.
Work with his team.
Kakashi attacked first.
A blade flashed.
Minato easily avoided it.
"You've improved, Kakashi."
Kakashi appeared behind him.
"Not enough."
Minato smiled.
A clone.
Kakashi realized too late.
The real Minato appeared behind him.
But before he could counter…
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"
A large fireball forced Minato to move.
Obito landed beside Kakashi.
Kakashi looked surprised.
"You actually helped me?"
Obito shrugged.
"Don't sound so shocked."
"You usually rush in alone."
Obito smiled.
"Maybe I learned something."
Rin attacked next.
She used the opening to throw several kunai.
Minato avoided them effortlessly.
But Obito noticed something.
The kunai weren't aimed at Minato.
They were controlling his movement.
A trap.
Minato's eyes widened slightly.
"Good teamwork."
Obito smiled.
The three of them moved together.
Kakashi attacked from the front.
Rin supported from behind.
Obito controlled the battlefield.
For a moment…
Minato saw something different.
This wasn't the same Team Minato he remembered.
They weren't fighting as individuals.
They were fighting as a team.
Minato looked at Obito.
The boy's movements were strange.
His timing.
His awareness.
His understanding of combat.
It wasn't normal.
"Obito…"
Minato narrowed his eyes.
"Where did you learn to fight like that?"
Obito froze.
Then quickly smiled.
"I just practiced a lot."
Minato smiled back.
But he wasn't convinced.
The clock continued moving.
Soon, noon approached.
The three students were exhausted.
Kakashi looked frustrated.
"We can't beat him."
Obito looked at his teammates.
Then smiled.
"That's because we're trying to take the bells."
Rin looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"The bells aren't the point."
Kakashi's eyes narrowed.
"The real test…"
Obito pointed toward Minato.
"…is whether we work together."
Minato smiled.
Because that was exactly the answer he wanted.
The three rushed forward together.
Minato prepared to counter.
But this time, Obito didn't attack.
He created an opening.
Kakashi and Rin moved.
The teamwork was perfect.
Minato was forced back.
For the first time, he stepped away from the attack.
The bells rang.
Everyone froze.
Kakashi stared.
Rin smiled.
Obito looked down.
He had done it.
Not because he was stronger.
Not because he used the Sharingan.
Not because of his future knowledge.
Because he finally understood.
Minato removed the bells.
"You pass."
Kakashi looked surprised.
"All of us?"
Minato nodded.
"The lesson was never about taking the bells."
He looked at them.
"A shinobi who abandons their comrades is worse than trash."
Obito became quiet.
Those words hit harder than Minato knew.
Because he had lived the consequences of forgetting them.
After the test, the three sat together eating lunch.
Rin smiled.
"Today was fun."
Kakashi looked away.
"Don't get used to it."
Obito laughed.
"You're still the same."
Kakashi glanced at him.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
Obito smiled.
For once, he wasn't trying to compete.
He was just happy.
That night, Obito returned to the training field alone.
He looked at his reflection in the water.
His eyes activated.
One tomoe…
Then two…
Finally, three tomoe spun calmly within his crimson Sharingan.
Obito stared silently at his reflection.
The Sharingan had returned exactly as it had been at the end of his previous life—not the Mangekyō, but a fully matured three-tomoe Sharingan. Along with it came decades of battle experience, instincts honed through countless wars, and memories no child should possess.
He slowly deactivated the dōjutsu.
"I can't let anyone know… not yet."
If Konoha learned that a newly graduated Genin already possessed a fully matured Sharingan, questions would follow.
If Madara learned his chosen pawn had already awakened such power, his plans would change immediately.
No…
The future needed to unfold just enough for Obito to stop it.
Until then, he would remain the same clumsy, late, kind-hearted Obito everyone expected.
A mask hiding a veteran of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
Obito looked toward the Hokage Monument.
"Never again."
He clenched his fist.
"I won't let Rin die."
"I won't let Kakashi lose everyone."
"And I won't let Minato-sensei sacrifice himself."
With one last glance at the fading sunset, Obito turned and walked home.
Tomorrow…
His second chance would truly begin.
