Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Chunnin Exams

Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha

Chapter 7: The Chunin Exams

Spring arrived in the Hidden Leaf Village.

Months had passed since Team Minato's formation.

With each mission, the bond between Obito, Kakashi, and Rin grew stronger.

The rivalry between Obito and Kakashi had become one of Konoha's favorite spectacles, while Might Guy continued loudly declaring both of them his eternal rivals.

Life was peaceful.

For now.

Team Minato assembled inside the Hokage's office.

Hiruzen Sarutobi looked over the young shinobi with a proud smile.

"You've all shown remarkable growth."

Minato nodded.

"They're ready for the next step."

Hiruzen reached for a stack of forms.

"I am officially recommending Team Minato for the Chunin Exams."

Rin's eyes widened.

"The Chunin Exams?"

Kakashi remained calm.

"I expected as much."

Obito smiled.

The Chunin Exams…

Another memory from a lifetime long gone.

Unlike the exams Naruto would one day take, these were held during a time of uneasy peace. Shinobi from allied villages had gathered to test the next generation before tensions between nations boiled over into open war.

This was one of the last times the young shinobi of the Five Great Nations would compete as comrades instead of enemies.

Outside the Hokage Tower, Rin could barely contain her excitement.

"I can't believe we're taking the Chunin Exams!"

Guy suddenly appeared beside them.

"So are we!"

Obito jumped.

"Guy! Stop doing that!"

Guy pointed dramatically toward the sky.

"We shall compete with the flames of youth!"

Asuma sighed as he walked by.

"He's been saying that all morning."

Kurenai smiled politely.

"I think he's excited."

"I AM EXCITED!" Guy shouted.

Genma casually chewed on his senbon.

"This year's exams should be interesting."

Raidō nodded.

"Lots of talented genin."

Kakashi quietly looked toward Obito.

"You'll be there."

Obito grinned.

"Wouldn't miss it."

The following week, the written examination began.

Rows of desks filled the academy classroom.

Genin from across the Land of Fire quietly took their seats.

The room fell silent as the proctor entered.

"You have one hour."

Obito glanced at the questions.

They're difficult…

But nothing compared to the intelligence work he'd encountered during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

He calmly finished the test.

Across the room, Kakashi had already completed nearly every question.

Rin concentrated carefully.

When the time expired, the papers were collected.

"Results will be announced tomorrow."

The second stage tested teamwork.

Each squad was assigned a mock objective within Training Ground Forty-Four.

The Forest of Death had not yet earned its infamous nickname, but it was already a challenging training area filled with traps and wild animals.

Minato addressed his team.

"Remember your training."

"Trust each other."

Obito smiled.

"We will."

The exercise began.

Within minutes, hidden traps activated around them.

Logs swung from the trees.

Wire traps snapped upward.

Explosive tags marked dangerous paths.

Kakashi detected the first trap.

"Left."

Rin immediately redirected.

Obito disabled another with a kunai.

Their movements were smooth.

Natural.

Without speaking, each knew exactly what the others would do.

Minato watched from a distance.

His students had become a true team.

Later that afternoon, Team Minato reached the objective.

The examiners nodded approvingly.

"Excellent teamwork."

Rin smiled proudly.

"We did it!"

Kakashi looked toward Obito.

"You knew where every trap was."

Obito shrugged.

"I just had a good feeling."

Kakashi narrowed his eyes.

Again…

That answer.

Again…

It didn't explain anything.

The final stage consisted of one-on-one matches.

The arena buzzed with excitement.

The first few matches passed quickly.

Then the proctor called out,

"Obito Uchiha."

He stepped into the arena.

His opponent was a genin from another Leaf team.

The signal was given.

"Begin!"

The opposing shinobi charged recklessly.

Obito calmly sidestepped.

One sweep.

One arm lock.

The match was over almost instantly.

The arena fell silent.

Even Obito blinked.

Oops…

That was a little too easy.

The proctor raised his hand.

"Winner: Obito Uchiha."

From the stands, Kakashi crossed his arms.

"You've improved."

Obito smiled sheepishly.

"I guess all that training paid off."

Kakashi wasn't convinced.

Neither was Minato.

Later, Kakashi entered the arena for his own match.

His victory was even faster.

His precise swordsmanship left no room for doubt.

When he returned, Obito smiled.

"Nice fight."

"You too."

For a moment…

The two rivals simply nodded at one another.

No insults.

No boasting.

Just mutual respect.

Rin smiled.

"You two really are becoming friends."

Neither denied it this time.

As the sun began to set, Hiruzen addressed the successful candidates.

"You have all demonstrated the qualities expected of future leaders."

He paused.

"Those selected today will advance to the rank of chunin."

One by one, names were called.

Kakashi Hatake.

Obito Uchiha.

Rin Nohara.

Asuma Sarutobi.

Kurenai Yuhi.

Genma Shiranui.

Raidō Namiashi.

Ebisu.

Might Guy.

The newly promoted chunin stood proudly before the Hokage.

Obito looked around at the smiling faces.

His friends.

His comrades.

Many of them would one day become legends.

Others would carry invisible scars from the coming war.

He silently promised himself that as many of them as possible would survive this time.

That evening, Team Minato celebrated together at a small restaurant.

Laughter filled the room.

Guy challenged everyone to an eating contest.

Asuma complained about losing.

Even Kakashi smiled when Rin teased Obito for nearly choking on his food.

Obito looked around the table.

He wished he could freeze this moment forever.

But he knew better.

Peace never lasted.

As they stepped outside, the setting sun painted the sky crimson.

Obito stared toward the western horizon.

The Chunin Exams were over.

The next chapter of their lives was about to begin.

Far beyond the borders of the Land of Fire, the first sparks of conflict were beginning to ignite.

The Third Great Ninja War was no longer a distant future.

It was coming.
