In the history of Hollywood, the 1930s to the 1940s were the golden age of musical films. With constant improvements in filming techniques coupled with the pinnacle of luxury sets and productions achieved during that time, the song and dance numbers displayed in movies were entirely different from those shown on Broadway. Such musical films focused more on the combination of content and form, achieving high artistic accomplishments, so even though they were still in black and white, they remained wildly popular across America.
By the 1950s and 1960s, alongside the expansion of color films, musicals began to take on a more epic style and reached a zenith in Hollywood as a genre. Numerous actors became famous and even won the Oscar for Best Actress through this type of film, such as Julie Andrews.
