For Adrian, who had the foresight, it was possible to obtain the rights to those original screenplays in advance by various means, such as "The Matrix" and "Tomb Raider," which were movies adapted from novels and thus easier to handle. Therefore, when "The Hours" was published in '98, Miramax, under Adrian's instruction, contacted Michael Cunningham, who hadn't yet received the Pulitzer Prize, and thus easily acquired the film rights.
The director was still Stephen Daldry, who had proven his mettle with last year's "Billy Elliot" and had indirectly helped Nicole win Best Supporting Actress. Adrian didn't mind giving him the credit he deserved.
