Chapter 262 - Vol.06 Ch.36 – WHITEBEARD'S FINAL ORDER

The battlefield had become almost unrecognizable.

Smoke drifted across the shattered plaza, mixing with dust, fire, and the fading echoes of explosions. Marines and pirates clashed across every remaining stretch of ground, while the enormous walls of Marineford stood scarred beneath the gray sky.

Near the center of the chaos, Ace finally found his footing.

Luffy was still beside him, breathing heavily after everything they had endured. Sabo stood on Luffy's other side, his eyes sweeping across the battlefield with sharp caution. None of them had forgotten that their escape was far from over.

Then a thunderous voice rose above the battlefield.

"EVERYONE! WITHDRAW!"

Whitebeard's command carried across Marineford with enough force to silence even those fighting nearby.

Several of his commanders looked toward him in surprise.

Whitebeard stood amid the destruction, his bisento firmly in hand. His massive body was covered in wounds, blood running down his chest and staining the ground beneath him. Yet his presence remained as imposing as ever.

"Get out of here!" he ordered. "All of you!"

"Pops..." Ace's expression tightened.

Whitebeard glanced toward him.

For a brief moment, their eyes met.

There was no anger in the old man's gaze.

Only determination.

"Ace." Whitebeard's voice grew heavier. "We've done what we came here to do."

Ace said nothing. The weight of Whitebeard's command settled heavily in his chest.

He could only stare at Pops, already understanding the meaning behind those words.

Whitebeard wasn't asking. He was ordering him to leave.

Sabo immediately moved closer and grabbed Luffy by the arm.

"Come on, Luffy. We need to move."

"But—"

"Now."

Sabo pulled him forward before Luffy could argue.

Luffy looked back over his shoulder.

Whitebeard was already turning toward the enemy again.

"Pops!" Ace remained frozen for another heartbeat.

Then he heard Whitebeard's voice once more.

"Run."

Ace lowered his head.

His jaw tightened as conflicting emotions surged through him. Every instinct told him to stay. After everything Whitebeard had done for him, walking away while the old man remained behind felt impossible.

But Whitebeard had given his order.

"Let's go." Ace finally turned.

The three brothers began moving together through the battlefield.

Sabo stayed close to Luffy, constantly watching their surroundings. Whenever Marines approached from the side, he adjusted their path before they could be surrounded.

"Keep your eyes forward," Sabo warned.

Luffy nodded, though his gaze repeatedly drifted toward the fighting behind them.

He moved closer to Ace.

"We've come this far, Ace."

"Sabo... Luffy..." Ace looked at both of them.

"Don't worry about me." Sabo gave him a faint smile. "Just keep moving."

Another explosion thundered somewhere behind them.

The shockwave rolled across the plaza, forcing the three brothers to brace themselves. Luffy immediately turned toward Ace, shielding him from the flying debris.

Sabo glanced at him. "You're really not going to let him out of your sight, are you?"

Luffy shook his head.

"Not anymore." His eyes returned to Ace. "I'm getting him out of here."

Sabo gave a small nod.

"Then let's make sure all three of us make it."

They continued forward.

Behind them, Whitebeard remained like an immovable mountain amid the chaos of war.

The old pirate raised his weapon once more and stepped toward the enemies surrounding him.

Marco noticed.

"Pops..." His expression darkened.

Whitebeard didn't look back.

His remaining sons were already moving.

That was all he needed to see.

The order had been given.

Now it was their turn to survive.

Ace kept pace beside Luffy, while Sabo guarded their flank.

For the first time since reaching Marineford, they were no longer advancing toward the battlefield.

They were running away from it.

And behind them, Whitebeard remained alone against the war.

Yet even as Ace forced himself to keep moving, a troubling thought refused to leave his mind.

How long could Whitebeard keep fighting?

Every few steps, his eyes drifted back toward the battlefield they had left behind. The distance between them and Whitebeard was growing, yet the old man's presence could still be felt through the tremors rolling across Marineford.

Another violent impact shook the ground.

Ace stopped for half a second.

Sabo immediately looked at him. "Ace?"

Ace turned toward the source of the disturbance.

Through the smoke, Whitebeard's massive silhouette emerged once more, his bisento sweeping through the chaos as he confronted the Admirals.

Yet something had changed. Ace could see it now. Whitebeard's movements were slower—not by much, but enough.

His breathing had become heavier, and every movement seemed to demand more from his aging body. Blood continued to run from countless wounds, soaking his coat and dripping from his fingers.

"Pops!" Marco noticed it too.

Whitebeard ignored him.

He planted his feet and swung his bisento again, forcing the three Admirals to retreat.

Marco's expression tightened.

Whitebeard had always seemed invincible to them. Even after devastating blows, he would rise and continue as though nothing could bring him down.

But now his body was beginning to betray him. His shoulders rose and fell with each breath, his knees steady only through sheer will.

Marco flew closer, his eyes fixed on the wounds covering Whitebeard's body.

"That's enough, Pops. You've taken too much damage already."

"Don't worry about me, Marco." Whitebeard gave him a sideways glance.

"How can I not?" Marco's voice carried frustration. "You're bleeding everywhere."

Whitebeard gave a low chuckle. "I've had worse."

Marco didn't smile.

He knew that was a lie.

He had seen Whitebeard endure wounds that would have broken ordinary men. Yet something about him felt different now.

Marco's eyes remained fixed on his father.

For the first time, he wasn't watching an unstoppable man.

He was watching his father struggle to keep moving.

A sudden burst of light flashed across the battlefield.

Kizaru's attack came from above.

Whitebeard raised his weapon and deflected it, but the impact forced him back several steps.

Ace's eyes widened.

"Pops!" He instinctively started to turn around.

Sabo caught his shoulder.

"Ace, keep moving."

"He's hurt badly." Ace shook his hand away.

"He knows what he's doing."

Ace stared at Whitebeard.

The old man had already straightened himself.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, tightened his grip around his bisento, and stepped forward once more.

He didn't look back.

Arthur had been watching from a distance.

Unlike the others, Arthur hadn't moved with them. His position gave him a clear view of the battlefield, and what he saw was enough to make his expression harden.

Whitebeard was still holding off three Admirals, refusing every chance to retreat.

Arthur's expression hardened. He had seen enough.

He approached through the chaos, stopping several meters away from the old pirate.

"Whitebeard."

The Yonko turned his head.

Arthur's gaze moved over his injuries.

"You're pushing your body too far."

Whitebeard grinned. "And you're starting to sound like Marco."

"I'll take over." Arthur remained serious.

For a moment, Whitebeard said nothing.

The battle continued around them. Ice cracked across the ground. Light flashed overhead. Somewhere in the distance, another section of Marineford collapsed with a deafening roar.

Arthur didn't move. He was offering Whitebeard one final chance to let someone else carry the burden.

But his answer came without hesitation.

"No."

"Your condition—" Arthur narrowed his eyes.

"This is my war."

Whitebeard slammed the butt of his bisento against the ground.

The force of the impact sent cracks racing across the stone.

Arthur fell silent.

Whitebeard looked toward the path where his sons were escaping.

His expression softened for only an instant.

Then he faced the Admirals again.

"They still have a future ahead of them." His grip tightened. "My job is to make sure they reach it."

Arthur studied him for several seconds.

He could have argued.

He could have forced the issue.

But he understood the conviction behind those words.

Whitebeard wasn't fighting because he believed he could win.

He was fighting because he had decided there was something more important than victory.

His sons.

Arthur finally stepped back.

"Then I'll respect your decision."

Whitebeard gave a satisfied grin.

"Good. Make sure you all get out of here safely."

Arthur turned toward the direction Ace, Luffy, and Sabo had taken.

His eyes followed them briefly before returning to Whitebeard.

There was something different in the old man's expression now.

A quiet resolve.

Arthur couldn't quite place it, but he knew Whitebeard had made a decision.

Whitebeard raised his bisento.

"Get lost."

Arthur nodded and moved away.

Behind him, Whitebeard once again advanced into the storm of battle.

Marco watched from above, his expression growing increasingly uneasy.

He knew that look.

He had seen it before.

Whitebeard had never been one to speak unnecessarily when the lives of his sons were at stake.

And as Marco watched the old man step deeper into the battlefield, a terrible realization slowly began to take shape.

Whitebeard wasn't planning to leave Marineford with them.

For several seconds, Marco said nothing.

The realization settling in his mind was becoming impossible to ignore. Marco knew his father too well to mistake that stubbornness for reassurance. But there was something in his father's behavior that felt different from his usual stubbornness.

Marco flew lower.

"Pops."

Whitebeard didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the path where his sons were retreating. Ace, Luffy, and Sabo were already farther away, their figures becoming smaller amid the chaos.

Only after confirming that they were moving did Whitebeard finally speak.

"Marco."

"Yeah?"

"Listen carefully."

Something in his tone made Marco's expression change.

Whitebeard rested his bisento against his shoulder.

"Once Ace is safe, everyone leaves."

Marco stared at him.

"Everyone?"

"All of them." Whitebeard's voice remained calm. "Take the ships and get as far from Marineford as you can. Don't wait for me."

Marco's eyes widened. "You're coming with us."

"Did you hear me, Marco?" Whitebeard gave him a faint smile.

"Pops..."

Marco understood.

His father's words weren't just a precaution.

They were an order prepared for the possibility that he would not be there when the others escaped.

"No. I'm not leaving you behind." Marco's expression hardened.

Whitebeard chuckled softly. "That's why I'm telling you now."

He turned toward Marco, his gaze carrying the same authority that had commanded the Whitebeard Pirates for decades.

"You're my first division commander. Make sure the others make it out alive."

"What about you?" Marco's fists tightened.

Whitebeard looked ahead again.

"I'll stay here as long as necessary."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Marco lowered his head for a moment, struggling to accept what his father was saying.

Whitebeard had always been the pillar holding them together. For the men who called him father, the thought of sailing without him had never been imaginable.

But now that possibility stood directly in front of them.

"Pops... you're asking us to leave you."

Whitebeard's expression softened.

"No." He looked back at Marco. "I'm ordering my sons to live."

The words struck harder than any attack.

Marco's eyes trembled.

Whitebeard continued before he could respond.

"You've all given me enough."

He glanced toward the retreating pirates scattered across Marineford.

"Every one of you has fought for me. You've risked your lives, crossed seas, and followed a fool like me into wars that should have killed us all." A quiet smile appeared on his face. "And I'd do it all again."

Marco swallowed hard. "Then let us stay with you."

"That's not what I want." Whitebeard shook his head.

"What do you want?" Marco looked at him.

Whitebeard's gaze moved toward Ace.

The young pirate was still running with Luffy and Sabo, unaware of the conversation taking place behind him.

"I'm a remnant of the old era. There is no ship in the new era meant to carry me." His voice became firm. "I want all of you to live."

Marco fell silent. He knew there would be no changing his father's mind.

A distant explosion suddenly shook the ground. Marines surged forward as the pirates attempted to break through the remaining lines.

Whitebeard raised his weapon again.

"Go after them. If you need help, go to Arthur."

Marco hesitated.

Whitebeard looked at him one final time.

"That is my final order."

Marco's eyes widened.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

"...Yes, Pops." Marco slowly lowered his head.

He turned toward the retreating pirates.

But before flying away, Marco looked back once more.

Whitebeard was already facing the enemy.

Alone.

Marco clenched his teeth before finally taking off. He disappeared into the smoke.

Whitebeard tightened his grip on his bisento and turned toward the battlefield.

The Admirals were waiting.

Aokiji advanced across the frozen ground while Kizaru descended in a flash of golden light.

Whitebeard raised his weapon.

"Come on, then."

Only then did Whitebeard allow himself a quiet breath.

Once Marco disappeared into the smoke, Whitebeard turned his attention back to the battlefield.

The only thing that mattered was whether his sons made it out alive.

A familiar voice suddenly cut through the chaos.

Akainu.

The Admiral had recovered.

And his eyes were already fixed on the three brothers fleeing toward freedom.

A cruel smile appeared on his face.

"Well, well..."

Whitebeard's eyes narrowed.

Akainu wiped the blood from his mouth.

"Running away already?" His voice carried loudly enough for the surrounding pirates to hear. "Looks like Whitebeard's precious son doesn't have the courage to stay."

Ace heard him.

His footsteps slowed.

"Don't." Sabo immediately noticed.

Ace stopped.

Akainu's smile widened.

"That's right, Ace." He raised his voice once again. "Run while your father sacrifices himself for you."

Ace's fists tightened.

Sabo stepped in front of him.

"ACE!"

Akainu's gaze shifted toward Luffy. "Or perhaps you'd rather watch your little brother die first."

Ace's eyes widened.

Sabo shouted at the top of his lungs.

"ACE! KEEP RUNNING!"

Ace froze.

Akainu's fist ignited with magma.

The moment Akainu lunged forward, a violent shockwave tore through the battlefield.

Before he could turn, a tremendous force struck the Admiral from the side.

BOOM!

Whitebeard unleashed the Tremor-Tremor Fruit at full power.

Akainu was blasted away, his body sent skidding across the shattered plaza before disappearing behind a cloud of dust.

Ace instinctively pulled Luffy back.

Sabo moved beside them, ready for another attack.

"What was that?" Luffy asked.

Ace looked toward the source.

Across the battlefield, Whitebeard stood with his bisento raised.

The old pirate stood with his bisento planted against the shattered ground, residual vibrations still rippling through the air.

He steadied himself for only a moment before raising his weapon again.

Aokiji advanced through the spreading ice, while Kizaru appeared above them in a flash of golden light.

"Looks like you've still got some strength left," Kizaru remarked.

"More than enough to handle you, brat." Whitebeard gave him a grim smile.

Aokiji's eyes narrowed. "Then let's see how long that lasts."

The two Admirals attacked almost simultaneously.

Ice surged across the ground.

Golden beams descended from above.

Whitebeard twisted aside, shattered the ice with his bisento, then raised his fist and struck the air.

The space before him distorted.

A powerful tremor erupted, forcing both Admirals to break their advance.

For a brief moment, the three monsters were locked in another fierce exchange.

Ace watched from a distance.

His eyes remained fixed on Whitebeard.

Even now, the old man was holding them back.

Even now, he was buying them time.

"Come on," Sabo urged. "We have to move."

Ace didn't answer.

He knew they should keep going.

There was no mistaking what Whitebeard wanted them to do.

But before Ace could turn away, a voice came from behind the smoke.

"Running away? Leaving your old man to die?"

Ace's body stiffened.

The dust slowly cleared.

Akainu emerged from the wreckage.

Blood ran down the side of his face, and part of his coat was torn from the impact. His expression, however, showed no fear.

Only anger.

His eyes settled on Ace.

"So this is the son of Gol D. Roger."

Ace's expression hardened.

Sabo immediately stepped between him and the Admiral.

Akainu continued.

"Whitebeard went to war for you. His men threw away their lives for you. And now you're running while that old man stays behind." His lips curled into a cruel smile. "Looks like you're not much of a son after all."

"Shut up," Ace growled.

Akainu smiled.

"Did I touch a nerve?" He pointed toward the distant battlefield. "Look at him."

Ace glanced back.

Whitebeard's movements were becoming increasingly labored, yet every strike still forced Aokiji and Kizaru to respect his strength.

"That old man is finished." Akainu laughed.

Ace's fists trembled.

"Don't listen to him." Sabo grabbed his shoulder.

Akainu's gaze shifted to Luffy.

"And you're running away with Dragon's brat?"

"Don't call me a brat!" Luffy glared at him.

"That criminal blood runs through his veins." Akainu's expression darkened. "Then perhaps I should kill you first."

Magma began to pour from his fist.

"Don't you dare." Ace's eyes widened.

Akainu took a step forward.

"Whitebeard's final order was to run, wasn't it?" His voice became deliberately mocking. "Then keep running while your father dies behind you."

Ace's breathing grew heavier.

"Or are you too ashamed to leave him?"

Ace's fingers curled into fists.

"ACE!" Sabo's voice cut through the tension. "KEEP RUNNING!"

Ace stared at him.

"That's what Whitebeard ordered you to do!" Sabo pointed toward the escape route.

For a moment, Ace seemed to understand.

He turned away. "...You're right."

"Good. Now move." Sabo exhaled.

The three began running again.

Akainu's smile disappeared.

He wasn't going to let them escape.

A surge of magma erupted from his arm.

"Run all you want." He hurled the attack toward Luffy.

"MEIGOU!"

Ace heard the attack behind him.

"LUFFY!" He turned.

Without hesitation, Ace threw himself between his brother and the incoming magma.

Sabo moved at the same time.

"ACE!"

The magma fist came crashing down.

Sabo lunged forward and grabbed Ace by the shoulder, dragging him sideways. But in doing so, he put himself directly in the attack's path.

Sabo braced himself.

Then—

someone stepped between them.

The air itself seemed to change.

Arthur stood directly in front of Akainu.

The magma attack stopped inches from Arthur, halted by the force surrounding him.

Behind him, Sabo, Ace, and Luffy stared in stunned silence.

Arthur slowly raised his eyes toward the Admiral.

Akainu's expression tightened.

Arthur's gaze briefly settled on the scar running along the Admiral's neck.

Then he smiled faintly.

"I gave you that scar on your neck."

Akainu's eyes narrowed.

Arthur took one step forward.

"Do you want me to take the rest?"

For the first time, Akainu's attention shifted entirely to Arthur.

Magma began pouring from both of his arms.

Arthur remained perfectly still.

Behind him, Ace realized what had just happened.

Arthur had abandoned his position to protect them. He had promised to respect Whitebeard's choice, but that promise had never extended to standing by while the Marines killed one of his own.

Sabo tightened his grip around his weapon.

Luffy stared at Arthur's back.

And across the battlefield, Whitebeard briefly glanced in their direction.

He understood immediately.

The escape had just taken a different turn.

Akainu raised his magma-covered fist.

Arthur lowered his stance.

Neither man said a word.

Akainu lunged.

Arthur moved.

The next clash was about to begin.
